Talking Tree at The Hotel Marblehead

As we were driving down Pleasant Street the other day, my wife and I noticed that The Hotel Marblehead's blue and white exterior had been...altered. As a set for Adam Sandler's Netflix movie 'Hubie Halloween' that had been filming in downtown Marblehead recently, the hotel had gone through an incredible transformation to this haunted mansion complete with what appears to be a talking tree. When we drove by, there were lots of people admiring the work. I decided to return before sunrise hoping for some fog to add to the haunted look but that didn't transpire. I got the shot [...]

Fort Sunrise

I hadn't been back to Fort Sewall since the day after the storm that took down large pieces of what I affectionately called the Giving Tree. I had woken up early this morning for a different shoot after noticing the Hotel Marblehead's new paint job (watch for that shot tomorrow). I finished shooting from Pleasant Street and was disappointed in the lack of fog or a nice sunrise and was all set to turn back home when I decided to continue down to Fort Beach and see what had become of the tree. Last time I turned onto Front Street, [...]

Glowing Sand at Devereux Beach

I mentioned in yesterday's post that my wife and I had headed down to Neck Run for ice cream on Saturday night when a nice sunset began to form. After capturing the image looking back toward the parking lot, I wandered along the water line and stopped for this shot. Low tide created a beautiful reflection on the glowing sand at Devereux Beach with the pink clouds mirrored in the water and wet sand.  The beach was fairly deserted for such a nice summer evening.

Low Tide Sunset

On Saturday night, my wife and I headed down to the Neck Run Cafe for after-dinner ice cream and a walk along the causeway. I had thrown my camera in the car (just in case) - the clouds did show some promise. As we finished up the scoops and turned back, I spotted the first hint of color in the evening sky. I grabbed my camera from the car while my wife stayed behind and headed down to the water's edge. The tide was at 0 feet and I had plenty of space to capture the whole of this low [...]

Marblehead’s Giving Tree at Fort Sewall

Since moving to Marblehead in 2008, I must have made the drive up Front Street toward Fort Sewall hundreds of times. Last night as I drove up, I felt like I had been punched in the gut - the tree at the edge of the Fort was broken. There are lots of trees at Fort Sewall but I bet you knew immediately which one I was talking about. The great canopy of Marblehead's Giving Tree was instantly recognizable from land and sea as one looked out toward Fort Sewall. It has formed the focal point of many of my images [...]

Sunset View from Corinthian Lane

Near the end of May, I was fortunate to end up on the Neck as a beautiful sunset took shape over Marblehead harbor.  This sunset view from Corinthian Lane developed slowly and hit its peak a few minutes after 8:00. We've had a few really nice sunsets lately and hopefully will get a few more with the warm weather and occasional storms predicted for the week.

Chasing Storms at Castle Rock

In mid-July, I headed out to the Neck as lightning struck to the north and south of Marblehead. I missed a few bolts and was waiting for the two cells to come together when the light changed and the grass seemed to glow. I decided to take a break from chasing storms at Castle Rock and enjoy the peaceful quiet of this view.

Harbor Row

I shared a few photos from our Friday evening boat ride around Marblehead Harbor but just finished working on several more images from that trip to add to my 'from the water' series. As we rounded Fort Sewall and made our way into the protected waters, we spotted a lone man taking advantage of the warm weather and calm conditions for a harbor row. From this vantage point, the moorings and boats were out of the frame and I was able to focus on the single canoe with the trees of Fort Sewall to the right and Abbot Hall in [...]

Ghosts in the Trees

In mid-July, historic downtown Marblehead was transformed into Halloween Salem for Hubie Halloween's filming. I headed down on July 16th hoping to capture the full moon rising over Old Town House with some of the decorations (like the ghosts in the trees) visible. I lucked out with the light and the ghosts but the moon was swallowed up by cloud cover.

Castle Rock Fly By

Last Wednesday, I headed out a little before 5pm to chase lightning storms offshore. There were two storms to our north and south at the time and I had decided to start at Castle Rock in the hopes of capturing a bolt of lightning. I spotted a few flashes of light as I walked to the large granite formation and set up only to find the storm rapidly disappearing.  In its wake, I was left with an even more interesting scene with a dramatic sky overhead serving as a nice counter to the calm water of the Atlantic ocean. I [...]
