The Lifeguard Chair on Devereux Beach

With the strong sunset colors of yesterday's image (and the equally strong ones in tomorrow's shot), I thought I would switch to black and white for today's post.  This was taken at Devereux Beach in August while my wife was out of town and I was looking for something to keep the kids occupied.  It promised to be a warm evening so I grabbed the camera and we headed out to Devereux beach. The beach was surprisingly empty though you can see the cloud cover in this photo which kept it from being a great beach day.  The kids still [...]

Summer Sunset at Devereux Beach

This Summer has offered one incredible sunset after another.  This image from July 15th came about when I was out in search of long exposure images at Devereux Beach [LINK to that image].  Before getting to work on the image I had in mind, I had to stop and compose a few images to capture the beauty of soft sunset light with wispy clouds hanging over a calm ocean.  I love the reflected light off the clouds here and the soft white surf as the water hit the sand.  Couldn't ask for a calmer or more beautiful scene than this [...]

Sunset Cloud at Devereux Beach

Yesterday, I shared the image of cannon fire at sunset.  Before crossing the causeway, I had stopped at Devereux Beach and noticed this single cloud reflecting the golden light of the setting sun.  I chose a portrait orientation so that I could include the light reflecting off the ocean water and the surf along the sand. Seemed like a perfect image heading into the Memorial Day weekend.

The Ocean Beckons at Devereux Beach

This image comes from the storm that came to shore on March 7th and didn't leave us until the 9th.  The Nor'Easter had incredible power and displayed it with waves that easily crashed over the causeway.  I went out as much as I could and tried to capture the incredible scenes of nature's power. By March 9th, the storm had finally pushed away from shore but its tail end continue to send wave after wave crashing to shore.  I had hoped to make my way to Devereux beach to capture the waves but Ocean Avenue had been closed due to the dangers of crossing [...]

Crashing Waves at Greystone Beach

You know things are bad when posting an image of crashing waves after a long and brutal storm actually cheers me up and helps me forget about the miserable cold outside with snow still on the ground.  This particular image was taken on Saturday, March 9th after that long storm finally moved off but seemed to still be churning up a significant amount of wave action in its wake. I had already been to Preston Beach for a solid hour shooting the waves as they hit the wall when I decided to drive over to Greystone Beach.  The waves were [...]

Day 4 – Curling Waves at Devereux Beach

Saturday seemed like a normal day - wake up, play some squash, get some breakfast...the usual.  As I finished a game, I received a text from a friend with an image of crashing waves at Preston Beach.  This was high tide but I figured the storm would have left and the seas would be calm at this point.  Guess I was wrong.  I quickly headed home and grabbed my camera for another outing. I started off at Bass Rock Lane and then headed to Preston Beach where I got a cool shot with the anchor (image is 'in the queue'). [...]

Walkway to the Clouds – Goldthwait Reservation

Back to the archives for this image from May 2011.  Ever since I found the walkways leading over the rocks and down to the beach at Goldthwait Reservation, I had wanted to photograph them.  I had a number of ideas in mind but never had the right conditions for them.  Finally on a cloudy day in May, the elements all seemed to come together.  I used a wide aperture to decrease the depth of field and waited at the bottom of the walkway for light to come through the thickening clouds.  The resultant image was what I hoped for but [...]

Experimental Friday – Tilt Shift on Devereux Beach

Another entry for Experimental Friday and another attempt with the borrowed tilt shift lens.  After shooting the playground, I decided to try my hand at the causeway and the seal embedded in the concrete.  By using this special lens, I was able to keep the lamp posts in the distance lined up straight while still playing with the plane of focus and keeping the guard rail out of the frame.  Won't be too much longer before the beach is packed as we cool off from the heat of Summer...

Experimental Friday – The Devereux Beach Playground

I recently borrowed a friend's tilt-shift lens for a planned architectural shoot.  On the first day that I had the lens, some fog rolled in and I decided to try the lens out and see what it could accomplish.  The lens is used mainly to make sure lines line up straight but can be used in a more creative fashion to adjust the depth of field on an image and make objects appear smaller and toy-like.  With the fog, I decided this lens would allow me to capture the elements of the Devereux beach playground without the clutter of other [...]

Fiery Tendrils Reach Out at Devereux Beach

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on Sunday to shoot the sunset before capturing the image of the lighthouse dressed up for the season.  I had driven to Devereux beach in the hopes that the clouds would break just enough for a nice sunset.  As I arrived and evaluated the beach, I noticed the ocean kept coming in tendril-like motions at certain points.  I decided to set up the tripod at one of them and waited for the sun to dip below the horizon.  As it did so, a red light emanated and was reflected in [...]
