Experimental Friday – Yellow Trees on Beacon Street

I've shared some other 'experimental' shots on Fridays and thought I would bring this one out from hiding to see what you thought of it.  In mid November, I was driving around town looking for spots of color and happened upon this curve on Beacon Street.  The problem was that the only interesting part of the scene was the yellow color on this group of trees.  I therefore decided to darken the surrounding parts of the image and use a technique called the Orton Effect to add a deeper color and more painterly quality to the image.  So...does it work?

Falls Colors on Display at Memorial Park

These cool days (and my recent trip up to Vermont) have put me in the mood to chase foliage in town.  While I've only had a bit of success so far, I decided to dive into the archives and share some images from last year.  Yesterday, I showed the Gun House with a brilliant yellow tree in the background.  Today, we visit Memorial Park.  This maple tree was at peak color (and had already started to drop its leaves) when I visited on a late October day.  The light was harsh at 11:30am but the polarizer I used served to [...]

The Gun House of Marblehead

The Gun House of Marblehead was, as the sign proclaims, built in 1810 and was meant for storing artillery.  I happened to drive by it on Elm Street one day in early November of last year. The sun was still relatively high in the sky at almost 3pm and lit up the tree behind it in a beautiful yellow glow.  I decided to capture the old brick house and later learned the doors were slated for replacement.  I haven't been back yet to see if the new doors changed the building's appearance.

Old Town House Draped in Falls Best

I had my eye on this tree for weeks and kept waiting for it to finally reveal its full color.  It cooperated very well by doing so on the first Wednesday in November.  I tried to set up for this shot but had a car parked directly in front that obstructed my view.  Just as I was about to give up, the car took off and I managed to snap this image during a short break in traffic.  Enjoy another scene of Fall as the weather holds out against the coming Winter for at least a bit longer. Don't forget [...]

Waterside Painted in Red

Fall is finally showing its true color in Marblehead and I have been fortunate to catch a few areas at their peak.  On Saturday, I was driving down West Shore when I saw this brilliant tree in Waterside Cemetery.  I quickly turned around and grabbed my camera for a few shots.  The trouble was that many of the trees in the background had already lost their leaves so the lone tree looked a bit depressing rather than vibrant.  I chose to process this photo using the Orton effect (which I also used on the Welcome to Marblehead sign a while [...]

Fall colors explode in Marblehead

On Tuesday, November 8th I found myself with a bit of time at 3pm with which to explore downtown.  I drove down Pleasant street with a destination in mind when I saw this tree lit up by a late Fall sun.  I quickly parked and set up to capture this beautiful tree at peak color perfectly framing the beautiful blue door of this house.  If you look carefully, you can just make out the tag explaining that this house was built by Samuel Martin, Housewright in 1828.  I found a wealth of color as I raced against the setting sun [...]

Trees Rise from a Colorful Swamp

It took a while to happen but the leaves have finally started to show their Fall colors.  I rode along the rail trail on October 18th and stopped at a small opening through which I noted this small swamp.  The bare trunks rising from it contrasted nicely against the changing colors in the background.  I waited for a break in the clouds to bring out the colors and captured this image. Technical: Shot at f/2.8 to make the foreground trunk stand out and blur the background.  Used a circular polarizer to bring out the reflection in the water and help [...]

A Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride Through Town

The Fall Festival took place this weekend and we headed to old town to take part in the festivities.  There were sidewalk sales, kids activities and a horse-drawn carriage ride down Washington Street.  We stood in line and were fortunate to be in the front of the carriage where I kept busy shooting frame after frame of this incredible scene.  It's not hard to imagine similar horse-drawn carriages traversing Washington Street hundreds of years ago and passing these same sites.  I liked this view of Old Town House best of the series.

The View from Leggs Hill

The alternative title for this post is 'what a difference a week makes'.  As you can see below, I shot nearly the same scene one week apart.  Above is sunset on October 27 - below is sunrise on October 20.  It's amazing how quickly fall colors can take hold and completely change a landscape. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 exposure bracket

Turning Leaves at Waterside

It seems that Fall is finally coming to town!  Found this tree as I made my way back from a sunrise shoot at Redd's pond (see yesterday's post).  The light was right and the wind died down long enough to get a few shots in.  If anyone has great trees showing their colors in their neighborhood, please contact me. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 lens.  6 Bracket exposure.
