Abbot Hall

Stuck in a Frozen Marblehead Harbor

On Wednesday, I headed out at sunrise to capture images of Marblehead Harbor frozen from the arctic cold that has held strong for much of the past month.  I began by shooting from the mainland but then decided to drive across the causeway for images of the working boats now stuck in a frozen Marblehead harbor. I've never seen this much ice in Marblehead harbor before and, while nowhere near the thickness of ice in images from the 1970's, it made for an awesome sight.  I decided to compose this image with Abbot Hall, St. Michaels and Grace Community Church visible [...]

Trodding Toward the Sunset at Crocker Park

After an impossible amount of snow fall, it seemed that the sky would never clear from its dreary grey.  But, as I finished shoveling our driveway, I noted a bit of sky poking out near the horizon.  I quickly walked into the house and up the stairs for a better view and, sure enough, blue sky could be seen in all directions under the clouds.  I figured there was a chance that the clearing would hold and the sunset would reflect off the clouds above and the freshly fallen snow that has piled up throughout the town - and so [...]

From the Rooftops – Western View from Abbot Hall Tower

For this From the Rooftops Thursday, we return to the top of Abbot Hall Tower where I was fortunate to find myself on an early December morning.  I had climbed the scaffolding surrounding Abbot Hall to help document the work being done to restore the tower to its full beauty and function.  However, once up at the top of the scaffolding, I couldn't help but capture views of Marblehead from this incredible vantage point. In this image, I was facing roughly southwest from where I could angle the camera to include much of the Town of Marblehead and, in the [...]

Smoke on the Water – Marblehead Harbor filled with Sea Smoke

In 2012, I was fortunate to witness and capture sea smoke on what was easily the coldest day of that year.  Since first seeing the incredible beauty of smoke rising off the ocean at dawn, I have sought to capture it again.  I went out a number of times in 2013 but the conditions were never right for sea smoke to develop.  In January 2014, I photographed backlit sea smoke as the sun rose behind Tinker's Island.  With all prior attempts, I had hoped to see sea smoke rising within Marblehead Harbor.  I'm not exactly sure what conditions favor the [...]

From the Rooftops: Abbot Hall’s new Clock Face

I've shared two images from atop the scaffolding which surrounded Abbot Hall during its much needed recent restoration.  One of the reasons I was able to climb to the top for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was that I was capturing images of the work as it unfolded.  One of the requests was for images of detail work and the new clock face. On this day, I had waited at the base of the scaffolding from sunrise until the crew had gathered and begun taking their positions throughout the scaffolding.  I climbed up as fast as I was able and reached this [...]

Historic Marblehead and Harbor from Atop Abbot Hall

I mentioned in yesterday's post that a combination of luck, circumstances and a commission to document the effort to restore Abbot Hall led me to the top of the scaffolding surrounding the building in November.  While I spent much of my allotted time photographing details of the work, I couldn't help but take in the incredible views of historic Marblehead and harbor from atop Abbot Hall. This is my favorite view from this once-in-a-lifetime vantage point with all of historic downtown captured in a single frame.  The harbor and Marblehead Light can be seen in the distance as can many [...]

A New Weathervane atop Abbot Hall Tower

Ever since the scaffolding went up around Abbot Hall as part of a restoration project, I searched for a way to the top for what promised to be incredible views and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  As the Summer passed and the main avenues I could pursue kept closing, I started to lose hope. In late November, I was invited to receive a certificate of recognition from the Old Marblehead Improvement Association.  As I listened to speeches and saw other awards handed out, I noted that all of the key members of the Abbot Hall restoration project were gathered in this one place! [...]

Footprints in the Snow

Hardly any snow has fallen thus far but it seemed appropriate to share this image today leading up to Christmas later in the week.  The image was captured on February 14, 2014 while I explored Crocker Park after a pretty impressive snow storm. I trudged up the small hill from which I could capture Abbot Hall and the houses surrounding it and noted the footprints in the snow.  I decided to use the steps as a (broken) leading line into the scene.

Boats and Scaffolding

As the scaffolding around Abbot Hall slowly comes down, I wanted to revisit this image from September captured during a low tide that allowed me to walk up to one of the floats in the harbor. Abbot Hall and the Herreshoff Castle

Finishing off the week with this image from an incredible sunset captured in late August from Crocker Park. I've shared a few shots from this night before but, at this point, had stepped back to near the entrance to the park in order to include both Abbot Hall (with its scaffolding and large M) as well as the Herreshoff Castle. Don't forget that I will be at the Boston Yacht Club for their Harbor Holidays on Saturday from 10am to 4pm for a book signing and will have select matted prints available at discounted prices.  Hope to see you there!
