Abbot Hall

From the Rooftops – Lookout Court and Abbot Hall

So technically this was a From the Second-Floor Bathroom rather than a Rooftop view but it was above the ground and too good to not share.  As you may remember, I was fortunate to be invited to The Terraces for a rooftop view.  After taking that photo, I checked other rooms and found this view looking back up the street in a bathroom.  I set up the tripod over the toilet and somehow managed to get everything lined up just right. The hard part was processing this image as there were numerous power lines crossing in front of the house. [...]

From the Rooftops – Peeling Paint and Abbot Hall

I posted a wider view from this rooftop location a while ago but wanted to revisit the spot to showcase this particular image.  If you compare the two, you'll appreciate the difference that a different focal length can bring to a scene.  By zooming in for this tighter view, the peeling paint in the foreground and the architecture of the rooftops become the focal point of the image.  It's amazing to see the variety of chimneys up here and follow all of the lines through the photo. This image (and many more) will be shown at my individual exhibit at [...]

From the Rooftops – From the Top of Old North Church

The new year began for me on the top of Old North Church.  Once we made our way onto a balcony outside of the bell tower, I noted these decorative posts dotting the balcony.  The view reminded me of one seen from Notre Dame of gargoyles watching down over the city with the Eiffel tower in the distance.  Seeing Abbot Hall in the far right edge of the scene cemented that image and I sought to capture the image with that in mind.  I took another set of pictures without the post but preferred this composition.

Keep it Local – Lee Antiques and Lucky Elephant

At the end of November, I was exploring the Five Corners section looking for businesses to feature on my Friday section.  I looked up Washington Street toward Abbot Hall and quickly focused on this composition.  I love the winding street leading the eye toward Abbot Hall.  The store fronts - including Lee Antiques and Lucky Elephant lead the way and make for a great destination if you are dining in the area.

A Marblehead Sunset from Crocker Park

For the past two weeks, the Christmas lights have been on at the lighthouse.  Having captured images of the lighthouse decked out for the holidays from Chandler Hovey Park, I decided to try to find a different composition and headed to Crocker park.  I got there a bit early and was rewarded with a great pastel-pink sunset. As soon as the sun dipped below the horizon, I went to work to capture the soft Winter light and the great clouds above.  This was one of my favorites from the set of images taken that day.  A few minutes later, I [...]

From the Rooftops – Looking up Washington Street

I have had my eye on a particular rooftop since before this project began.  It belongs to the apartment on 128 Washington Street and I had tried to contact the tenants there on a few occasions to see about shooting from this vantage point.  I had nearly given up until I walked into Shipshape one day and was informed by the owner that the apartment was currently vacant.  I quickly phoned Gerald Kaplan who was renting the space and we arranged to meet near sunset. The view, as you can see, was clearly worth the wait.  I spent an hour [...]

Coming to port with an aerial escort

As we neared The Landing under the incredibly dramatic sky, I noted this view with Abbot Hall's tower jutting up behind the homes lining the harbor.  As luck would have it, a seagull appeared and decided to fly to just the right point to make the composition stand out (I promise he/she is real and has not been Photoshopped into place).  It's no wonder that this is such a sailing town when you can experience such views when you return to harbor (let alone all that you see when you leave our protected waters).

Heading into the Harbor

As we made our way back into town on board the Hannah Glover from Childrens Island, this was one of the first scenes I captured under the developing dramatic sky.  The clouds and light were surreal and I tried to capture the feel of coming back into the harbor after a day of sailing and seeing the familiar landmark of Abbot Hall welcoming you home.  Tomorrow brings us a step closer to The Landing...stay tuned.

Sailing across the harbor

Near the end of October, we headed out to Childrens Island for the YMCA Fall Festival.  While there, I explored the views looking back toward town and found this great one with Abbot Hall on one end and Marblehead Light on the other.  The only thing missing was a boat for this sailing town and, luckily enough, a single sailboat began to journey across the waters just as the light and clouds made for the perfect scene. Expect to see more photos from our journey back to town on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and the beginning of the [...]

A Halloween Regatta on the steps of Abbot Hall

Bit of a late entry today as I could not make up my mind which of three shots to post.  I asked fans on my Facebook page to weigh in and this was the unanimous winner.  On October 29, the Eastern Yacht Club sponsored an in-harbor regatta.  Given the location and the promise of colorful sails, I knew that I couldn't miss this opportunity and headed down to the Neck long lens in hand.  I set up near the Pleon yacht club and braced myself against the wind as the boats moved across familiar landmarks. As I mentioned, I ended [...]
