Abbot Hall

Trees Grow in Marblehead

I have been trying to find a good vantage point from which to photograph Abbot Hall on Front Street for some time.  The problem has been all of the overhead wires that crisscross that street.  Earlier this Spring, with these two trees in full bloom, I finally found the location and managed to capture this view. A bit of technical information for this one.  The image you see is a combination of two photos with focus points that vary between them.  I shot the trees in focus first and then quickly switched to Abbot hall.  I was shooting with a very long [...]

Spring in Marblehead – Flowers and Abbot Hall

From a recent trip on the Marblehead Neck comes this view of Spring flowers on Foster Street.  After photographing the sun over the expansive home on this street, I turned and noted this view of flowers with the harbor behind.  The composition was a bit tougher and involved me laying down on the grass and trying to capture the image in a contorted position.  Enjoy this and a few more views of Spring coming later in the week.

Long Exposure – A dramatic view of a pier on the Neck

A dramatic image on this Long Exposure Tuesday.  Back in January, I began my exploration of the piers that line the Neck and jut out into the harbor.  With a long exposure, still objects are key and so my eye was looking for appropriate subjects as I wandered down to the beach along the Neck.  I had explored a few compositions with this particular pier but it wasn't until I stepped back and included its full length that I felt I had the right one to balance the scene. With the composition set, I simply had to wait...and wait...for the [...]

From the Rooftops – The Town and Abbot Hall

Just when I thought I would run out of rooftop views, this location literally fell into my lap!  A friend from Marblehead who had recently moved to London was visiting and rented an incredible condo at 18 Prospect Street.  We headed over there for dinner and I brought my camera when I heard about the rooftop balcony view of Abbot.  Though we ended up losing the light pretty fast, this scene before me made for a great outing. I love the view of Abbot Hall standing tall among the houses below.  It feels a bit like a castle on the [...]

First Sail of the Season

As I mentioned in yesterday's long exposure post, I headed out on April 1st as the clouds moved in hoping for a dramatic sky and happened upon this scene.  A group of sailboats looked to be in the midst of practice drills and must have been one of the first sails of the season.  I couldn't have asked for a better backdrop than Abbot Hall and the clouds reflecting the afternoon sun.  Pretty soon we'll have this harbor filled...

Long Exposure – Under the Corinthian

This past Saturday started off with boring blue skies but the weather report promised incoming clouds.  I decided to head out in the hopes of capturing the clouds as they came in and use a long exposure technique to show their movement.  As I drove across the causeway, I noticed sailboats in the harbor and stopped to take a few images of them passing in front of Abbot Hall (come back tomorrow to see that post).  I continued to drive around the Neck exploring possible shots when I happened upon someone I knew on Corinthian Lane.  After chatting with him [...]

Keep it Local – Georgie Living

Georgie Living is the retail home for Georgina Ryan, an interior designer, and offers 'casual elegance with award winning design and personal attention'.  On this particular morning, I was exploring Washington Street's stores before daylight savings and the end of the parking ban colluded to keep me from shooting these beautiful empty streets.  I tried a few angles to get in the building that houses Georgie Living and Scuppers next door but wasn't happy with any of the compositions.  When I got closer and noticed how neatly Old Town House and Abbot Hall lined up in the background, I knew [...]

Stacked Houses and Abbot Hall at Christmas

On December 24th, I found myself at Crocker Park awaiting the sunset and the lighting of the lighthouse's decorative lights.  As I looked back toward Abbot Hall, I noted the familiar scene of houses seemingly stacked on each other with Abbot overlooking them all.  The scene was made unique by the lit Christmas tree in that first home and I set about getting this image between shots of pink clouds and the harbor's last boats under a pinkish/purple sky.

From the Rooftops – the Cupola of Old North Church

I hope you are not tiring of these rooftop views courtesy of the Old North Church.  I had such an incredible time that morning and get to relive it each time I share another image from that adventure.  When Rhod and I first ventured up before sunrise, we went straight to the cupola and found that the windows had frosted overnight.  This was almost the end to our outing but Rhod managed a MacGyver-esque save that got us an even better view. While he worked with a flashlight and scissors a floor below, I got to work shooting the interior [...]

From the Rooftops – Washington Street and Abbot Hall

Back to Old North Church for another view of the sunrise from the rooftops.  This is one of a series of images taken on January 1st, 2012 as I welcomed the new year with Rhod Sharp on the cupola of the Old North Church.  I've shown views looking down Washington Street towards Little Harbor, Gerry Island and the Lighthouse previously.  This one looks back up toward Old Town and Abbot Hall.  The architecture of these old houses makes it easy for the eye to slowly walk up the street toward Abbot Hall in the distance.
