Fall Morning in Salem Harbor

On Friday, October 17, I noted the thick hazy clouds in the morning and the way they diffused the morning sun.  Before taking the kids to school, I threw my camera bag and tripod in the trunk of my car in case the light held for a little longer. As I came down Lafayette Street, I was thrilled to see the clouds were still holding back the brightness of the sun and noted this small patch of foliage had turned bright red.  I captured a few images from various vantage points but this was an immediate favorite. With the bright [...]

The Maple Tree at Seaside Park

I've shared two images of this Maple tree at Seaside Park so far but couldn't help myself in sharing one more vantage point.  I had photographed this tree for the first time in the fog on October 20, 2012 and had returned on October 4, 2014 to find it at nearly peak color.  The light was flat and skies were gray and so I made it a point to return the next morning when the forecast called for blue skies and scattered clouds. I started off photographing this Maple tree from the other direction so that I could include the Seaside [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Crowninshield Road

All of this week's images were captured over a few hours span on Sunday morning.  I had started out along Beacon Street hoping for a solid dawn and sunrise and having that wish fulfilled (more of those images next week). As the sun rose above the horizon, it began to light up the trees along Crowninshield Road and, in particular, one tree showing off its Fall colors.  With the expansive view of Doliber Cove and the orange color of this one tree lit up by the morning sun, the scene seemed to sum up Fall in Marblehead quite well.

Peak Foliage in Marblehead – Brilliant Reds at Seaside Park

Monday's post included a horizontal view of this maple tree at Seaside park showcasing its brilliant red color at peak foliage along Atlantic Avenue.  I couldn't leave this scene with only one image and worked a number of angles before the sun rose too high in the sky for me to be able to get the compositions I wanted. I'm still torn over which image I prefer - this vertical one or Monday's horizontal view.  In either case, I was thrilled to be able to capture this tree's beautiful colors showcasing Fall in Marblehead.

Old Town House and the Maple Tree

On Sunday morning, after capturing views of dawn from Beacon Street, I drove into historic downtown Marblehead to check on the progress of a certain tree on Washington Street.  This maple tree stands in the space between two multi-family homes with stores on the ground floors.  I have tried to capture the Old Town House and the maple tree on several occasions over the years but was never happy with the colors of the leaves of the composition. As I drove down Mugford Street, I was surprised to see very few cars parked around Old Town House and Washington Street. [...]

Peak Foliage in Marblehead – The Tree on the Avenue

There are a few trees in town that have become my favorites over these past 5 years and the maple on Atlantic Avenue near the Seaside park sign is among them.  I had gone out on Saturday in grey, flat light and found this tree to have reached almost peak foliage.  The weather was due to turn for the better the next morning and so I made the quick decision to wake up early and try to capture theist tree at peak foliage in better light. I started off shooting around Doliber Cover and Little Harbor (come back Thursday and [...]

First Foliage of the Season – Green Street Cemetery

On September 21, a thick fog descended on Marblehead as sunset neared and I made a dash out to the Green Street cemetery where I has spotted the first foliage of the season.  The fog helped hide the wires overhead that still seem to overpower the scene.  I tried two different compositions and honestly can't decide which I like better and if either really 'works' in the end. Can't wait to shoot more scenes of Fall in Marblehead in the days to come...

Indian Summer in Marblehead

This past Summer in Marblehead has to rank among the most perfect (weather wise) in a very long time.  We had a mild June and July followed by a blast of heat and humidity at the end of August/early September and then the cool (but not too cold) days of late Summer/early Fall came.  This weekend, though, brought back the warmth and humidity to stave off that Autumn and soon-to-be Winter chill for at least a few more days.  While not meeting the technical definition of an Indian Summer in Marblehead (the Farmer's almanac states the warmth has to occur [...]

Gravestones under a Maple Tree

Fall has arrived but the trees are only slowly making their way from green to brilliant orange and red this year.  I decided to look back at the archive and found this image captured on September 25, 2013 with gravestones at the Green Street Cemetery seen under the light of a Maple tree at peak Fall colors. I had capture this tree previously in a favorite image.  You can see all of my foliage images of Marblehead to get ready for this coming season by clicking here - Click for Foliage

Last Ones Out of Marblehead Harbor

Yesterday's bright sun and relative warmth helped erase some of the lingering cold from the too-long Winter.  It reminded me that Marblehead Harbor would soon start filling up with boats and so I looked to the archive for images of some of the last boats left in the harbor. In this image from October 22nd, you can make out more than a few boats on their moorings and the subtle colors of Fall in the trees around Abbot Hall. Won't be too much longer before Marblehead Harbor begins filling up with boats for a new season...
