Marblehead Harbor

The Show is About the Begin

Rather than share one or two shots from Tuesday night's fun outing and then save the rest in the 'to be published' folder, I thought it would be fun to take you through the hour spent at Crocker Park as the light developed. I cheated by showing one of my favorites from 8:07pm right off the bat but let's take a step back. I arrived at Crocker Park at 7:20pm and captured this shot at 7:27. I had chosen Crocker because the light seemed most promising to the north where a storm was crossing over Gloucester but another had just [...]

Boats in the Harbor and a Fire in the Sky

As I walked our dog tonight, I spotted a very vibrant rainbow overhead and didn't even have my iPhone on me to capture it. By the end of the walk, I had figured there were better than even odds of a nice sunset so I grabbed my bag and headed out. I was more curious about the eastern sky so I headed to Castle Rock but the cloud formations didn't hold much interest. From there I moved on to Corinthian Lane and then Foster Street where I found a nice vantage point for the evening's show. I started shooting as [...]

May Days in Marblehead

There is always a small lull in my photography in mid-May between the explosion of flowers at the beginning of the month and the build up of boats in the harbor towards the end. This shot was taken on May 22, 2015 and found in my 'to be posted' archive. Seemed like a nice window into the near future with the harbor rapidly filling with boats and coming into its picturesque summer shape soon.

An Empty Harbor Awaits

After getting out to shoot for the first time in weeks on Sunday, I awoke early this morning and checked the weather to see if the sunrise might be worth another outing. The cloud cover looked promising and, when Matt Noyes mentioned a nice sunrise on NECN, I knew I had to head out the door.  I drove to Hammond Park first but found the composition options limited from there. I then headed to the State Street Landing and walked to the right onto Tuckers Wharf where I found a nice angle for capturing the dawn. As the sun began [...]

Spring is in the Air and Class is in Session

What a great way to kick off spring by dusting off the camera after 7 weeks without a single photo and heading out to the newly repaired public way at Parker Lane.  The Marblehead Tech Dinghy Association is one of the bright spots of this COVID winter. With frostbite sailing sidelined due to restrictions on sailing and with these MIT one-design racers available, a new group of boats could be seen racing within Marblehead harbor. The Tech Dinghy was designed by a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1935. In November 2020, Jay Watt created the Marblehead Tech [...]

Mid-Harbor Sunset on this Small Business Saturday

First, thank you to everyone who purchased a 2021 Calendar, the Wednesdays in Marblehead book and/or prints over the past week - I really appreciate your support of my work! And if you haven't yet, my 25% off sale continues until Monday, Nov 30th.  Today being Small Business Saturday, I wanted to mention that you can also purchase my calendars at Crosby's, Shubies, Arnould Gallery and Scribe. Today's image was captured on October 1 when I flew the drone for the first time in a while and stopped around mid-harbor for this view of a fall sunset. With boats nearly [...]

Between the Pylons

And this was the view looking to the left from my spot along Foster Street from the night of October 30th. I normally would compose the image to focus on Abbot Hall and the distant skyline but noticed that the sunset was perfectly reflecting off the water between the pylons of the Pleon pier. I times this shot to capture the white surf in the foreground and pink-red hue of sunset light reflecting. The focal point quickly shifted to the pier and Abbot Hall and the distant houses fell into the backdrop.

Humid Days and Foggy Nights

I was at my office in Salem today when I started to notice the light change and took a quick peak at the webcams lining Marblehead harbor to find an incredible combination of fog and light developing. I was stuck til 5pm and with sunset before 4:30 I could only sit and watch the sunset unfold. With that in mind, I wanted to revisit my foggy shots in my 'to be published' folder and immediately stopped at this one captured on July 5, 2016. One of my all time favorite outings with countless 'keepers' took place on this night. At [...]

Halloween Blue Moon

And this was the view of the Halloween blue moon rising over Children's Island on October 31. I arrived at Crocker Park more interested in trying something new with focus stacking using a small pumpkin but, once the full moon appeared, I found myself in awe of the sight. There was something about this moment with the moon not yet cleared of Children's that made me immediately mark it as a favorite. The two boats moored in the harbor helped with a foreground element and broke up the otherwise empty harbor. I ended up with multiple outings between October 29 [...]

First Snow of the Season

Remember how I was lamenting Thursday's mediocre sunrise in this morning's post? Tonight's sunset after the first snow of the season more than made up for that morning! I arrived home after work and grabbed my wife and kids to drive down Pleasant Street and view Tom Saltsman's latest Halloween masterpiece...King Kong. After that we headed home and I quickly turned around to drive across the neck as I had spotted a small opening in the cloud cover near the horizon. I arrived on Foster Street and, sure enough, sunset light had snuck through and lit up the clouds. The [...]
