Sailing Past Chandler Hovey Park

One Sunday in August, our former neighbors (and now friends) invited us out for an early afternoon sail.  We made our way out of the harbor and I was pleased to see plenty of other boats doing the same.  As the kids took turns piloting the boat and the adults took care to make sure we followed a steady course, I happily shot from the side.  Though I haven't had many opportunities to shoot from the water, I have a few favorite images from those rare chances.  There's just something about being on the water and composing images from that [...]

Lobster Traps and the American Flag

On a late June morning and after shooting the sun rise over the harbor, I made my way to the landing to check for any good photo opportunities.  As I mad my way down the ramp to one of the floating docks, I noticed the sun was about to rise immediately behind the American flag.  I quickly set about composing this shot and liked the balance of the lobster traps in the foreground with the lighthouse and boats in the harbor serving as backdrop.  The sky still held some good color and the flag did a great job of keeping [...]

Lighthouse Reflections at Sunset

If yesterday's post was the 'rule breaker', this one is toeing the line when it comes to composition.  You'll note the lighthouse in the left third of the frame, the leading lines formed by the grass bringing the viewer's eye to the base of the lighthouse and then extending up in the form of the clouds over the water. So, which do you prefer - the 'rule breaker' or 'rule follower'?

Marblehead Light at Sunset

This image 'breaks' most of the accepted rules of photographic composition.  The center of focus should not be in the middle of the frame, the horizon should not be a the center either.  The important part of knowing the rules though is understanding when they can and should be broken.  In this case there are added elements to take away from the centering of the lighthouse - such as the tree to the left.  And the diagonal formed by the pink clouds is accentuated by other diagonals in the reflecting pool of water, ocean, and the lighthouse itself.  Hope you [...]

A Rainbow over Marblehead Light

On July 3rd, immediately preceding an epic sunset over the harbor (click to view), this cloud and its accompanying rain shower made a brief appearance over Marblehead Neck.  I had just gotten to Crocker Park when I saw this rainbow form.  I had just enough time to grab the camera, throw on a polarizer (to bring out the light in the rainbow and more clearly show its colors) and grab this image.  Less than a second later, the colors began to fade and the rainbow was gone.

Harbor Illumination

A gigapixel view of the Marblehead Harbor Illumination iPhone/iPad users - click the grey title bar for an iPhone friendly version (pinch to zoom that one). Before the fireworks began, I had another image in mind and carefully setup to try to achieve what you see above. I photographed the Marblehead harbor illumination at a focal length of 105mm (approximately 4x zoom equivalent) using 28 vertical images. The combined image is a staggering 325 megapixels. I then uploaded it to Gigapan and embedded their viewer above. By using the controls, you can zoom in as far as you want and [...]

Fireworks from Crocker Park

Another Fourth of July has come and gone and, with it, another incredible fireworks display over the harbor.  I struggled in choosing a spot for this year's show.  I had previously shot twice from Chandler Hovey park and once from Fort Sewall.  After scouting areas early this week, I decided on Crocker Park.  As I did in the past two years, I sought a vantage point from which I could include the crowd.  I found that seeing people in the image helped pull me in and make me feel like I was there (well, you know what I mean). I [...]

Epic Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I made my way to Crocker Park last night in hopes of shooting the almost full moon.  I was hoping for an image of it rising over the Festival of Arts stage but it rose too early.  I then watched as this beautiful bank of clouds approached and crossed over the harbor.  Fifteen minutes earlier, I was treated to a rare rainbow over the lighthouse in the distance. I left the circular polarizer on and captured the incredible golden light reflecting off the clouds onto the filled harbor below.  You can just make out the full moon on the far [...]

Marblehead Fireworks – Best Show Around

I couldn't think of a better image to start off this extended Fourth of July weekend than my first shot of Marblehead fireworks.  Since I started this site in August 2010, this image taken from the 2009 show has never been shared.  Seemed like a great way to set the scene for what promises to be a great week.  I'm posting my other Marblehead fireworks images below for those who may have missed them or just want a taste of what's to come this Wednesday (in Marblehead). Update: New in 2014, you can donate to the Marblehead Fireworks online!  The [...]

Sunset after the Storm

This will serve as a make-up post after today's poor showing on the site.  With the storm that came through tonight, I had really been hoping for a chance at shooting some lightning and headed out to the Neck with that in mind.  Unfortunately there was only wind, grey skies and some drizzle there so I walked around hoping the sun might shine through at sunset.  Not 10 minutes later, I saw the first hint of pink.  And then some more and then a bit more until this scene unfolded.  I had to crank up the ISO on the camera [...]
