The Brick Oil House in the Snow

Back to the great snows of 2009 for this image of the brick oil house that used to power Marblehead lighthouse.  This was taken in mid-January of what would end up being a great year for photos of snow.  I remember making my way to Chandler Hovey Park shortly after the snow stopped falling (and the plows made the roads drivable) to capture images of Winter's best.  The lighthouse itself didn't offer much but, after walking around to this vantage point, I knew I had the composition I wanted.  Between the old brick oil house and the covered bench as well [...]

Snow Blankets Redd’s Pond and Pond View

That was a pretty incredible first snow of the season!  Not really...barely any ended up sticking.  As I watched the slush fall, I combed through the archives and found this image from January 2009.  The original processing left much to be desired so I got to work trying to breathe new life into the photo.  I'm much happier with it now and hope it conveys that feeling of being out at Redd's as the snow drifts down on a perfect Winter day.

Melting Ice at Redds Pond

Don't get nervous/excited...it's another image from the archives and not the status of Redds at the moment.  This was actually taken in March 2009 after a snow storm and as the ice began to melt back.  As I mentioned on Monday's post, I have been trying to bring out images that have been sitting in my archive for a while and waiting for a break in new material to post them.  Hope you enjoy this view of Redds on this Wednesday in Marblehead...

Bringing Marblehead into Focus

The Winter without snow continues so I have returned to the archives for another snow-covered scene.  I was exploring Fort Sewall almost two years ago to the day when I noted the viewing scopes available for use.  I had my longest lens on the camera as I had planned to shoot close-ups of the lighthouse.  When I saw the word 'focus' imprinted on the scope, I came up with a more interesting shot. One thing a long zoom lens offers is the effect of compressing a landscape.  Distant objects appear larger and closer to the foreground elements.  Also, the long [...]

Fort Sewall in the Snow

One of my all time favorite images and one that I took within 6 months of moving to Marblehead.  I remember we had a significant storm come through on January 18, 2009 and I made my way up to Fort Sewall to explore.  The snow was wet and the air still so the tree that stands in front of the red doors still held on to much of it.  The beautiful outline of the tree's bark and the red doors offering a touch of color made for a perfect scene. I have returned to Fort Sewall numerous times over the [...]

Little Harbor blanketed in snow

Here is another photo from the archive as we await the first real snow of the season.  We had a fair amount of the fluffy stuff fall in 2009.  This was taken in January shortly after we moved to town.  I was still finding my way around and passed this scene on a drive home from old town.  I stopped and grabbed my gear to capture little harbor and Brown's/Crowninshield island with wet snow clinging to the branches.

Marblehead Lighthouse in the Snow

As the last week of 2011 begins, I have pulled this photo from the archive to show a snow covered Marblehead.  This was taken on December 31st, 2009 after a snow blanketed the town.  I headed down to Front Street beach and was fortunate that the tide had not yet removed the snow from the nearby rocks.  The holiday lights decorating the lighthouse seem to blaze in the early evening night. Happy Holidays!

A Snow Family in Snowctober

Well, we had our second snow of the season - though, I don't know if you can call Fall part of the 'snow season'.  Though other parts of the state ended up with at least 6 inches, we received a tolerable few.  I drove around town this morning on the hunt for foliage (which had been pretty sparse) to shoot with a backdrop of snow.  I couldn't find much until the very end but did see this 'snow family' at Seaside park.  I framed them under the weeping willow to highlight the very early snow as the willow hasn't even [...]

Hockey Night at Redds Pond

A picturesque frozen pond and kids playing a pick-up game of hockey...you really can't ask for a more quintessential New England scene!  I took my kids skating for their first time on Redds earlier in the day and promptly went out to purchase my first pair of skates (no real need for those when you grow up in LA).  I returned for a few practice runs on the pond and found this pickup game in process.  Grabbed the camera and shot a few frames.  This image had a very classic, timeless feel to it so I decided to make it [...]

Snow at the Fort

I had a chance to walk around town this morning and was treated to some great light as I got to Fort Sewall.  I've been up here countless times but never stopped to read this sign.  Figured it would serve well as the centerpiece of this photo overlooking Marblehead harbor.
