Humid Days and Foggy Nights

I was at my office in Salem today when I started to notice the light change and took a quick peak at the webcams lining Marblehead harbor to find an incredible combination of fog and light developing. I was stuck til 5pm and with sunset before 4:30 I could only sit and watch the sunset unfold. With that in mind, I wanted to revisit my foggy shots in my 'to be published' folder and immediately stopped at this one captured on July 5, 2016. One of my all time favorite outings with countless 'keepers' took place on this night. At [...]

First Snow of the Season

Remember how I was lamenting Thursday's mediocre sunrise in this morning's post? Tonight's sunset after the first snow of the season more than made up for that morning! I arrived home after work and grabbed my wife and kids to drive down Pleasant Street and view Tom Saltsman's latest Halloween masterpiece...King Kong. After that we headed home and I quickly turned around to drive across the neck as I had spotted a small opening in the cloud cover near the horizon. I arrived on Foster Street and, sure enough, sunset light had snuck through and lit up the clouds. The [...]

Fall over the Harbor

This was the sunset view I was chasing with my drone while also capturing the October Sky I shared yesterday morning. It's hard to believe but this was the first time I had flown my drone in over a year (and I had only one outing in 2019 as well). I made my way from Riverhead Beach to this point staying fairly low in the sky to avoid the high wind gusts while also trying to keep all the important elements in the final composition - the boats in the harbor, the soft color reflected in clouds overhead and that [...]

October Sky

Having gone out Wednesday during the day and again for the moonrise, I wasn't feeling up to another outing on Thursday night but then the sky started to break in just the right spots and I found myself driving towards the causeway to find the right angle for a shot. I ended up crossing the causeway and promptly turning back towards Riverhead Beach. I had charged my drone which I hadn't flown in a while and launched that after setting up the real camera on a tripod. I was able to capture images through a remote while flying over the [...]

Summer is Back

It was too early to have to deal with 40 degree mornings so I'm glad to see that summer is back at least for a few days of warmth. To celebrate, here is one of my favorite sunsets from last summer when I lucked out with perfect light after a boat ride around Marblehead harbor. Captured on July 19, 2019 at 8:24pm (hard to imaging with sunset now taking place around 6:30), I shot at the end of Village Street for only 5 minutes as the light peaked but came away with 6 keepers. This is the fifth one of [...]

Smoky Sunset

With fires raging along the west coast, it was only a matter of time before the fine particulates made their way across the country to our next of the woods. Thankfully the result was limited to cloud-like conditions during the day. I had a hunch that the haze might create perfect conditions for capturing the sun as a red ball tonight so I drove across the causeway right after dinner to chase this image. As I drove, I spotted the sun in my rear view mirror and was please to find the red ball I had hoped for. From there [...]

Foggy Sunsets on the Harbor

I found this shot in the To Be Posted archive last night and figured it was about time it saw the light of day. I captured this shot almost exactly 4 years ago (Sept 20, 2016) from the low tide area accessible from Corinthian Lane. I walked the length of this stretch of the Neck until I found the composition I was looking for with the sun setting aside Abbot Hall, a pier to the left with its flag limp due to lack of wind and layers of boats in the harbor. The mix of fog and late sun created [...]

Bathing in Light

Back from a week's staycation with this shot from that mid-August outing which featured the most varied light conditions I've seen in some time. From the same evening in which I captured the ominous sky over the causeway and Tinkers as well as the rainbow at Castle Rock and the vibrant sunset from the Pleon, I also found this scene of Marblehead Neck and Chandler Hovey Park bathing in light from the setting sun.  This was a surprisingly tough shot to capture and process with the sunlight on the Neck so bright and yellow that it seemed fake even while [...]

Afterglow of a Summer Storm

This was my last stop of the night on Wednesday August 19 after shooting at Riverhead, the Causeway, Fort Beach and Castle Rock. By the time I arrived at the Pleon Yacht Club, the sun had dipped below the horizon and I thought I had missed the best light. As I set up and composed a tighter shot, the afterglow of the summer storm seemed to breathe a second wind into the evening light and I captured this view of the harbor and Abbot hall in the distance.

Lightning Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

That was quite the lightning storm that passed over Marblehead tonight and I feel very fortunate to have lucked out with capturing this one bolt from along Corinthian Lane. Earlier in the evening, I watched as the storm approached but did not dare venture out based on the radar signature of deep reds and purples. I held hope that after the main storm passed, I still might have a chance to capture some of the action and, given the hour, maybe, just maybe a lightning sunset. As I left the house, I spotted a huge rainbow overhead but by the [...]
