September Sunset

I spent this weekend at a virtual photography workshop put together by Sony and learned several new ways of processing images that I hadn't appreciated previously. As the instructors went over various tools in Lightroom, I chose some images from my 'to be posted' archive that I had never been all that happy with and tried my hand at reprocessing them. This September sunset captured last year from the end of Peabody Lane was one such image. The original edit of this shot was way too dark with much of the color in the evening sky lost and, my favorite [...]

Little Harbor Sky

On July 30th, I headed out to chase after a rainbow with a storm passing overhead and found myself near the Little Harbor Lobster Company waiting to see what might come of the sunset. I was losing hope as the clouds seemed to be racing away but then spotted a huge cloud to my right heading towards the lighthouse just as another had come in from the left headed towards Gerry Island. I watched and waited as the clouds converged and then the sun dipped below the cloud cover and bathed the scent in soft sunset light. I was pretty [...]

Little Harbor – After the Storm

That was quite the storm that passed overhead before sunset! Our home weather station recorded rainfall of 3 inches per hour before the storm finally departed and, as soon as it did, I was in my car and headed out in search of a rainbow. I drove to Hammond Park and then decided to visit Little Harbor where I spotted the faintest rainbow overhead. It wasn't the image I hoped for but I spotted some interesting clouds coalescing behind Gerry Island and decided to watch and see if the sun might shine at the right moment to illuminate the scene. [...]

Gold Coast, Marblehead

Hard to believe that it was one month ago when I captured the best light of the summer at Devereux Beach. This was the night that I caught a full rainbow over the causeway and thought that would be the peak of light only to discover this incredible view of the Gold Coast on the shores of Devereux Beach twenty minutes later. This is the sixth image I will have shared from the hour spent running back and forth between the causeway and beach on June 24, 2020. I shot these two clouds from various angles and with differing compositions [...]

Bass Rock Sunset

This photo was taken 40 minutes after yesterday's rainbow over the causeway and lamp posts. After the rainbow disappeared, I was treated to an incredible sunset at Devereux Beach full of vibrant orange color. By 8:15pm, I had shot the same clouds from every angle imaginable and packed up to head home. As I drove down Atlantic Avenue, I noticed the sky turning shades of pink and quickly turned onto Rockaway Avenue and then walked out to the end of the public way at Bass Rock Lane where I saw this.  I couldn't decide between the tighter shot of the [...]

Rainbow Sunset

I was pretty happy after capturing the double rainbow over the causeway but, since the clouds were sticking around, I figured I would wait until the sun set. Exactly 30 minutes after shooting the panorama from the causeway, I was rewarded for my patience with an incredible sunset. You can just make out the last remnants of the rainbow touching the clouds which had reached what I thought was peak color over the Atlantic ocean. I packed up after this shot thinking the light was done and headed back home only to make one more stop when the clouds exploded [...]

The Neck at Sunset

For anyone with a boat, this would likely be a familiar view but as someone who doesn't get out on the water very much, I was in awe the first time I spotted the Neck appearing as its own perfect island. This image was capture on July 16, 2013 as we approached Marblehead Harbor from a sunset outing. Between the silhouette of Marblehead Light and the various levels of clouds reflecting different colors of light, I was struck by the simple beauty of the scene before me.

Moonlit Sunset

Today we go back 7 years to July 15, 2013 and this moonlit sunset over Devereux Beach. I had decided to push the exposure time to 6 seconds by lowering the ISO to 50 and the aperture of the lens to f/22 which served to turn the ocean water into a perfectly calm canvas for reflecting the soft pink light of sunset. The half moon was a nice bonus to break up that patch of sky over the clouds.

Foggy Nights in the Harbor

In ten years of capturing images of Marblehead, a few outings stand out and near the top of the list is July 5, 2016. I took 40 images that night that I marked as keepers which is just an insane number of images but the light changed so fast and I was able to shoot such varied compositions from a few vantage points that, even with today's image, I'm only halfway through the pile... With the fog rolling into the harbor at sunset, I was treated to soft pastel colors breaking up the view around Abbot Hall. Hope you agree [...]

Sunset at the Waters Edge

So this is a perfect example of what happens when I go out for a shoot and have decent light to play with. I shared one image from Wednesday night's outing yesterday and here is another captured 7 minutes later. I normally would have shared one favorite from this shoot and put the other in the 'to be published' archive where it might sit for weeks, months or years. Seeing the two images one after the other, it's interesting to note how different the scene appears from the same exact location but having dropped down to the waters edge here [...]
