Old North Church

Racing by Old North Church

Today's image comes from mid-February and an unusually warm day for watching and capturing frostbite sailing in Marblehead Harbor.  I had been shooting the sailboats primarily from the air but switched to my camera as they grouped together and captured this shot of the boats racing by Old North Church. With this arctic blast of cold in the third week of March, I don't think I'm alone in looking for reminders that Spring should be here soon and with it more boats in the water.

Hunter Moon sets over Old North Church

Conditions were perfect for last night's full Hunter moonrise and were predicted to be equally good for the moonset this morning.  I woke at 6, walked the dog, and then headed out to Chandler Hovey Park where I had plotted the moonset to occur just behind the Old North Church. It took a little while to find the perfect spot from which to capture this image of the Hunter moon setting over Old North Church.  There are still just enough boats in the harbor that finding a clean angle without masts in the frame can be a bit tricky.  This [...]

Red Sky at Night behind Old North Church

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had arrived at Castle Rock with some time to spare before moonrise and so I walked up to Corinthian Lane and then quickly back towards Nashua Avenue looking for a new angle from which to capture the sunset.  The clouds over the mainland were diffusing the sun's light as it descended toward the horizon and imparting a red glow to the sky.  As the old adage goes, red sky at night, sailors delight. I started off with a horizontal composition but found that I really wanted to focus on Old North Church in [...]

Christmas in Marblehead – Old North and the Houses

When I go out to shoot the town of Marblehead, it is not uncommon for me to find at least five different compositions in good light and then have to select one to share and place others in the archive.  On this day, I had set up at the pier of the Pleon Yacht Club which offered me a number of photographic possibilities.  This week, I wanted to share five different images captured from 3:45pm to 4:05pm on Christmas in Marblehead. Next is this image of Old North Church and houses along the waterfront taken just a few minutes after [...]

An Iconic View

On Thursday, I shared an image of Abbot Hall, Old North Church and the new St. Michael's steeple captured on a recent dawn morning.  This composition was what really brought me out on that day and it could not have happened without the help of three people. Ulrike Welsch is a phenomenal local photographer and I happened upon her image of Abbot Hall and Old North Church juxtaposed so that it wasn't clear which was in front of the other.  I commented in the prior post that I learned the location of this shot from Uli but was dismayed to [...]

A Perfect Morning in Marblehead

I can't imagine a better start to the day than capturing this image on a perfect morning in Marblehead yesterday.  The road to this shot was long and convoluted - I hope you don't mind a bit of a backstory... A few years ago, I happened upon an image by Ulrike Welsch of Abbot Hall and Old North Church juxtaposed so that one couldn't quite tell which was in front of the other.  The composition was nothing short of brilliant and I tried in vain to figure out where it was taken from.  Fast forward to a recent Farmer's Market [...]

Old North Church – A Study in Angles

For the past 5 years, the Old North Church has resisted all of my attempts to photograph it. While I’ve shot from its cupola, the building is so tall and the street below so tight, that I was never able to capture the full facade of the beautiful structure before without angling the camera upwards and introducing horrible distortions. With Canon's newest super wide lens on loan, I was able to stand across the street and take an image head on capturing the full stature of Old North Church enveloped in clouds. I then wandered up and down Washington Street [...]

Old North Church and the Harbor

A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through my Facebook news feed and happened upon a puzzle being sold on a local group page with a cartoonish drawing of Old North Church situated above the houses on Doaks Lane with a section of Little Harbor below.  The composition was one I did not believe existed in real life but, at the first opportunity of a low tide, I decided to see just how close I could get. I headed out to Gerry Island on August 17 at sunset and walked along the sandbar that appears with each low tide.  Once [...]

Historic Downtown from the Rooftops of Abbot Hall

Can you believe this image of historic downtown from atop Abbot Hall was taken in early December?  I can only imagine the view now with snow as far as the eye can see. I continue to feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to capture our town from this unique vantage point atop the scaffolding that encircled Abbot Hall during its much needed renovations. This view of historic downtown from atop Abbot Hall features the Jeremiah Lee Mansion, St. Michael's, Grace Community and Old North Church as well as a number of stores along Washington Street.

From the Rooftops – The Three Steeples

I have shared two images from this newest location of my From the Rooftops series - St. Micheal's Church.  I was fortunate to be invited to the top of the scaffolding at sunset and even more so to have great light with which to capture the scenes before me. One of the first things I noticed was the view of Grace Community Church and I started to photograph its familiar structure only to then note that I could include Old North Church's steeple as well.  It was only after walking near the edge of the scaffolding that I found this [...]
