Black Joe’s Pond

I've only captured two images of Black Joe's Pond in all these years of shooting landscapes in Marblehead and, as soon as I purchased my aerial camera (Phantom 4 Pro), I knew I would try to find a new angle on this great pond.  As it happened, we had picture perfect conditions on a recent Sunday in May and I headed out to Gingerbread Hill to scout out possible locations.  I ended up parking along Norman Street and then took off over dense foliage to find an interesting composition. Once I was up in the air, I found too many different viewpoints [...]

Golden Water in Marblehead Harbor

Last weekend, I decided to head out as sunset approached hoping for a break in the clouds to help light up Marblehead harbor.  As luck would have it, this was one of three sunsets in the past few weeks that have held great promise but fizzled in the end.  However, before the light faded, I composed this tight shot of Abbot Hall rising above boats on their mooring with the last light of sunset creating the effect of golden water in Marblehead harbor. For every great sunset capture there are easily a dozen outings that don't quite work out.  I [...]

Sailing on Redd’s Pond

On a recent Sunday, I decided to head out and capture aerial images of Marblehead's ponds.  One of my first stops was at this familiar one where I found model boats sailing on Redd's pond.  As the guys maneuvered their boats using remote controls to control the sails, I piloted my aerial drone overhead and found this composition. I tried to find a perfect spot from which I could capture the action on Redd's pond as well as the vibrant trees and red house across the water.  At the same time, I was hoping to catch a mirrored image of [...]

Summer Sunsets are the Best (name this beach)

Today's image comes from a never-ending Summer sunset that took place on July 18th.  I started shooting this sunset at 8pm on Parker Lane and it finally finished up at 8:18pm as I made my way to the small beach along the harbor on the Neck side of the causeway. I guess this is still considered part of Riverhead Beach as I can't find any other names for this small beach.  If you know of its proper name, please let me know.

Boats in the Harbor

On Saturday night, I watched the clouds form and break and scouted out the various webcams pointed at Marblehead Harbor until I finally decided to get up and hope for a good sunset.  I grabbed my camera as well as the Phantom 4 Pro with a specific location in mind. I drove across the causeway looking in my rearview mirror still unsure which way the sunset would go and parked along Foster Street in front of the Eastern Yacht Club.  There I was greeted by the sounds of a steel drum band and learned that an engagement party was taking [...]

Low Tide at Brown’s Island

Yesterday offered perfect conditions for flying over Marblehead and exploring familiar locations from a new vantage point.  I spent some time at Redd's and Black Joe's before driving down to Grace Oliver Beach and setting off to explore Brown's island. I have a favorite image of Brown's Island in my Wednesdays in Marblehead book captured from a friend's boat as we turned the corner and spotted Marblehead Light in the distance.  I wanted to capture a similar feel on this picture perfect day and flew to almost the same spot (but a few hundred feet above water level) for this [...]

Good Day for a Row through the Harbor

Although today's image was taken a few years ago (2011) and in a month you wouldn't expect (December), it seemed like the perfect shot to bring out of the 'to be posted' folder and share on this picture-perfect Friday.  I've shot the boats tied to their lines on Fort Beach countless times and in varying compositions but the light on this particular day was too good to pass up. With the clear, calm water, the scene seems to beckon the viewer in on a good day for a row through the harbor.

Stacking Rocks on the Causeway

Today's image is a bit of a throwback to 2013 and the Summer of stacking rocks.  Does anyone remember when new formations of stacked rocks would appear along the causeway?  It seemed that we had new ones form on an almost daily basis until the Neck end was nearly filled with these zen-like temporary sculptures. I'm not sure if they have shown up again since then...

Beacon of Light at Chandler Hovey Park

Whenever possible, I've tried to include the green beacon of light atop our lighthouse in images of Chandler Hovey Park.  And so when I had chased a sunset to this familiar spot and flew the Phantom 4 Pro for some aerial images, I was delighted to see the familiar green light shining against the darkening sky. I composed this image bisecting the lighthouse with Marblehead's skyline and made sure to include the Boston skyline as well.  With the dark cloud in the sky, the beacon of light shone even brighter in the final image.  It's amazing that only two months [...]
