Summer Fog in the Harbor

As Summer officially begins, I thought it appropriate to share a warm image and immediately went to the most productive day of my past 9 years in Marblehead - July 5, 2016.  It's rare to get a solid Summer fog in the harbor and to have it occur at sunset is an even rarer event.  To have that happen while I was in a position to capture the dramatic scenes before me was serendipity. I've shared many images from this night but never this one. As I was shooting boats moored in the harbor from Chandler Hovey park, I spotted [...]

Castle under the Clouds on Marblehead neck

Yesterday afternoon offered picture perfect conditions for aerial imagery of Marblehead Neck and I was fortunate to have taken the day off from work to capture the views.  I watched as the clouds filled in and then broke apart in the early morning hours and left the house a little after 11:00am to explore the possible images. I stopped at Desmoulin Lane at first and flew off shore but quickly decided that the clouds favored compositions from Castle Rock.  I drove there and flew again to find this incredible view of Marblehead Neck laid out before me. I doubt that [...]

Moonstruck at Chandler Hovey Park

I shared one image of the full Strawberry moon rising on June 9th as it cleared the slight haze at the horizon and shone low in the night sky.  As the moon rose, I followed its trajectory until the lighthouse became moonstruck with the full moon perfectly backlighting the green beacon at the top of the structure. The light of the full moon had just started to cast a glow in the still waters of Marblehead Harbor and created a very different scene from that taken only 7 minutes previously.  The earlier image is below to compare the two side [...]

Gerry Island Sunset

On June 9, I had gone out to capture the moonrise from Fort Sewall and brought my Phantom 4 Pro drone along to see how that might handle the full moon rising over the harbor.  Before the moon could rise, the sun set and I found myself with the wrong lens and poorly positioned to capture it from the ground. I quickly launched the drone and flew it over the water to this spot looking down on Glover Island at high tide.  The sun was just about to dip below the horizon as I captured this image of the last [...]

Chasing Rainbows in Marblehead

Yesterday, I had an interview with Mary Reines of the Marblehead Reporter for an upcoming story and I she asked what it meant to me that so many people seem to count on my capturing 'the shot'.  I answered that it is incredibly flattering and used the example of rainbows.  It seems that any time a rainbow forms in Marblehead, my wife's phone will start blowing up with incoming texts alerting her (and me) that a rainbow was formed and that I should head out to capture it.  Today's image reminded me of that feeling and I thought it fitting [...]

Summer Sunsets on the Harbor

With a record breaking second heat wave already this year, my thoughts have firmly turned to Summer and evenings spent chasing clouds across the causeway.  On this night in September, I had set up on Corinthian Lane and captured one of the more incredible Summer sunsets on the harbor. The evening's sunset started off with yellows and oranges coloring the clouds and reflecting in the water below.  Before it was over, the sunset had gone through a rainbow of colors including purples and finally reds.  I can't wait to start chasing these warm Summer sunsets again.

Doliber Cove and the Dr Seuss Tree

I know I'm not the only one in town who is fascinated by the Dr Seuss tree that can be found along the water at the edge of Crowninshield Road.  As I flew the Phantom 4 Pro from Grace Oliver Beach and over Doliber Cove, I kept Brown's Island to my right and moved into position to capture the tree on the left. At this height, the shallow depths of Doliber Cove become much more evident though most who have bathed in these waters can attest to its height.  It won't be much longer before boats tie up together to [...]

Summer Days on Little Harbor

The past few days have served as a very welcome reprieve from the cold and rainy Spring that didn't seem like it would ever end.  We finished off Sunday at Preston Beach and I returned home in the mood to share an image that would convey the feel of Summer Days in Marblehead. I found a few candidates but decided on this panorama captured in August 2015 that I've never shared.  When I arrived at the small boat yard at the end of Doaks Lane, I found this picture perfect scene before me.  I ended up making my way to [...]

By the Light of the Moon

Tonight the full Strawberry minimoon rose over Chandler Hovey Park and I was ready to capture the year's smallest moon from across the harbor at Fort Sewall.  I had set up with my camera on a tripod and brought along the drone wondering how a different perspective might work in shooting the moon.  When the moon rose, I learned quickly that the drone's camera was simply too small (in regards to focal length) to do this 'minimoon' justice and concentrated on getting this shot with the real camera. I decided to compose the final image to include the working boat [...]

Marblehead Sunset – 1 if by Land, 2 if by Air

On Saturday night, I once again chased a promising sunset across the causeway to Marblehead Neck and ended up on Parker Lane.  From there I set up my 'real' camera at the top of the stairs and also decided to fly my drone overhead as I wondered which might offer the better composition.  I ended up taking two different shots within three minutes of each other and still can't decide which view I prefer. The shot of this Marblehead Sunset by land has much better color and detail in the sky and the choice of a longer effective focal length [...]
