Riding out the Storm

For the second time this May, Marblehead was drenched by a long-lasting rain storm.  In between trying to protect the foundation of our new addition (it made it through fine both times), I spent most of today taking care of errands and tried to let my wife enjoy her mother's day.  As the day neared its end, I noted the clearing and brightening skies and left the house for a bit hoping to catch a rainbow or solid sunset. I drove out to Chandler Hovey Park but wasn't thrilled with the light and ended up crossing the causeway again and [...]

Moonrise Symmetry

The full moon rose last night and I had convinced myself that clouds would block any view of it only to catch a glimpse of it rising on the First Harbor webcam and lamenting my decision to bag it.  Thankfully, I still have over 700 images in my 'to be posted' folder that have yet to see the light of day and discovered this image of perfect moonrise symmetry. On July 31, 2015, I had gone out on a perfect Summer evening with hardly a cloud in the sky and was fortunate to capture several images of a beautiful moonrise [...]

Carnival by the Sea

Another year has come and gone and with it the annual Marblehead carnival by the sea.  This year's carnival brought with it the usual inclement weather but a break in the rain and fog on Saturday night brought kids of all ages to explore rides and games.  I arrived just before sunset and flew the Phantom 4 Pro over the parked trucks in order to capture the carnival as I hadn't been able to in years past. I had always envisioned this image of the chair swing spinning with the ocean spread out beyond to help display the perfect setting [...]

Jackson Cup Racing in Marblehead Harbor

The Jackson Cup took place last weekend and I decided to capture it from an aerial perspective rather than my prior attempts from Hammond Park and the Pleon/Eastern yacht clubs.  I was so thrilled with the video I captured that day that I promptly forgot about the still images. This was my favorite image of Jackson Cup racing in Marblehead harbor from last Sunday.  The boats were racing deeper in the harbor than they had been previously and they had broken up into a linear formation.  In this way, I was able to pull back a bit and capture the [...]

Rainy Days for the Marblehead Carnival

If you've been wondering what is responsible for the recent run of rainy days, look no further than Devereux Beach - the Marblehead Carnival is coming to town tomorrow, Thursday, May 4th!  It's become traditions that the annual Senior carnival brings with it inclement weather.  As a photographer, I've been delighted to visit the carnival on those rainy and foggy nights to capture images of the rides shining through the mist or reflecting in puddles. My full gallery of Marblehead Carnival images from the past eight years can be found below. Click the link for more:

The Golden Cod and the Cherry Blossom

So I've decided that this Spring is either very late or a complete dud at this point as there has been very little in the way of flowering trees to capture as of May 2nd.  As a very gloomy Monday came to a close, I looked into my archive and found this image captured on May 1, 2011 at a house across the street from Abbot Hall.  I was first drawn to this spot by the cherry blossom lit in morning light but then decided to compose the image to include the house sign with its golden cod. The sign [...]

Reflections on a Still Harbor

While aerial images can open up a world of possibilities in the hundreds of feet above Marblehead, I've really enjoyed using my new Phantom 4 Pro to capture images from just a few feet off the ground but in locations otherwise inaccessible to me before.  For today's image, I flew from Riverhead beach to these two moored lobster boats in the inner harbor and lucked out when the sun broke through the clouds behind me just as I got into position. I've always wanted to capture images of the working boats in our harbor in this way but previously was [...]

Spring in Marblehead – Cherry Blossoms on Washington Street

We were away last week during the school vacation having decided to drive down to Washington, DC and explore the city where we lived for several years before moving to Marblehead.  As we drove down, the trees filled in and flowers began to appear on trees.  DC itself was in full Spring bloom and pollen literally caked our car within a few days. On our return, I drove around town looking for signs of Spring in Marblehead.  I was disappointed to find my favorite patch of cherry blossoms had not started to bloom but found this tree along Washington Street [...]

Spring has Sprung in Marblehead

I think we can safely say that Spring has sprung in Marblehead.  I was sitting at home on this Wednesday as rain fell outside and saw sunlight suddenly stream through the window as the rain slowed.  I looked at my wife and she quickly said 'go ahead' at which point I grabbed my gear and headed out hoping for a rainbow. I drove to Riverhead beach and saw a very faint rainbow form as soon as I parked.  I flew the Phantom 4 Pro across the harbor to find a solid composition but the rainbow never fully formed.  Instead, I happened upon [...]
