This Weekend – Contactless Pop Up Sale on Books and 2021 Calendars

Last year, I had the pleasure of participating in several events with my calendar and books available to purchase.  This year, I thought it would be nice to do a Contactless Pop Up in front of my house.  I will be at 21 Shetland Road on Saturday from 9am to 2pm and Sunday from 10am to 2pm (weather permitting). I'll have my calendars and books available on a table set up in front of our walkway with Venmo, Credit Card or Cash options. Would love to say hi from an appropriate distance and I can bring out signed copies of [...]

Ring Around the Neck – Parker Lane

I had plans to share more images from this late September afternoon and a 'ring around the Neck' hitting some of my favorite spots but other outings kept getting in the way... On the same day that I visited Chandler Hovey for that 'sit for a spell' image I also stopped at most of the public ways on the Neck to capture scenes of Marblehead Harbor with some great light and clouds. This was the view from Parker Lane which has always been a favorite but has been limited in compositions for the past few years since the stairs have [...]

Hawthorn Pond

Last week I shared an image of Black Joe's Pond captured in 2019 and, in one of the comments, I was asked if I had photographed Hawthorn Pond. Up until then I hadn't even been to Hawthorn Pond and so on Saturday, October 17, I made it a point to head over there (after the stop at Brown's Island). I parked at the end of Hawthorn Road and then walked the trail which led me to this spot (also accessible via the Rail trail). I immediately spotted a duck floating in front of the pond grass and spent a few [...]

Abbot Hall above Prospect Alley

I mentioned yesterday that I had driven along Beacon Street on three occasions before finding peak color at Brown's Island. Well, one of those drives took place on October 7th and included a stop along Lee Street where it meets Prospect Alley to find this composition of Abbot Hall. While the tree on the left was just past peak with signs of burnt leaves, it formed a nice frame with the brick facade of a home along Lee Street with which to capture a different view of Abbot Hall. The late morning sun helped light up all three elements in [...]

Brown’s Island Foliage

By the time I finally got this shot on Saturday, October 17th, I had driving along Beacon Street on three other occasions to scout out the current state of foliage on Brown's Island. Each time, the color showed hints of progression but it wasn't until after the rain storm passed that I finally got the peak foliage color I was looking for. As luck would have it, the departing storm had broken up leaving a scattering of clouds in the blue sky overhead. The use of a polarizing filter helped accentuate the clouds as well as the color of the [...]

Out Past the Corinthian

On September 30th, I took a drive across the causeway and hit some favorite spots along the Neck under picture-perfect conditions. After a few shots at Chandler Hovey Park, I drove down Kimball Street and stopped where it meets Nahant for this view. If you have stopped here recently, there is a new wall in place and a very nice bench as well. I found a spot from which I could capture the edge of the Corinthian Yacht Club serving as a frame for the view of the harbor and Abbot Hall in the distance. A few trees had turned [...]

Reflections at Black Joes Pond

I may take a trip out to Black Joe's pond later today to see how it is faring with this very early foliage season. This was the peak of color captured last year on October 30th when the still water of the pond helped serve to reflect the color of the trees surrounding that one red house across the water.

Birds Eye View

When I flew my drone on a late September morning, I did so mostly to scout out foliage spots and was a bit disappointed with the lack of vibrant color. While hovering up there, I couldn't help but capture this view of Abbot Hall after its recent restoration and with the lawn coming along nicely. As a bonus, the birds eye view allowed me to capture a good portion of historic downtown (Old Town to some), the harbor and most of the Neck. With the 11am sun coming at an angle, the scene had a nice light to it as [...]

Fort Beach and the Neck

I went out twice yesterday and left my gear in the car 'just in case' only to completely miss the potential for a nice sunset; let alone a rainbow and lightning that I saw posted later that night.  Misses like that where I stand looking up at the sky and realizing it's too late to do anything but marvel at the light make me appreciate the times that I do make it to the right spot at the right time. This shot comes from mid-August and followed another stormy day in Marblehead. I arrived at Fort Beach a little before [...]

Ring Around the Neck – Corinthian Lane

Last Wednesday, I headed out shortly after lunch when I noticed clouds had formed overhead and broken up the perfect blue sky. I didn't have a clear destination in mind and ended up making a ring around the neck with stops at some of my favorite locations to take in the last of these late summer/early fall views of the harbor. This was the stop along Corinthian Lane where I made sure to include the flagpole and adirondack chairs perfectly set for a picturesque view of Marblehead harbor. I'll have more from this outing to share in the days and [...]
