Fall over the Harbor

This was the sunset view I was chasing with my drone while also capturing the October Sky I shared yesterday morning. It's hard to believe but this was the first time I had flown my drone in over a year (and I had only one outing in 2019 as well). I made my way from Riverhead Beach to this point staying fairly low in the sky to avoid the high wind gusts while also trying to keep all the important elements in the final composition - the boats in the harbor, the soft color reflected in clouds overhead and that [...]

October Sky

Having gone out Wednesday during the day and again for the moonrise, I wasn't feeling up to another outing on Thursday night but then the sky started to break in just the right spots and I found myself driving towards the causeway to find the right angle for a shot. I ended up crossing the causeway and promptly turning back towards Riverhead Beach. I had charged my drone which I hadn't flown in a while and launched that after setting up the real camera on a tripod. I was able to capture images through a remote while flying over the [...]

Harvest Moonrise from Crocker Park

On Wednesday, September 30th, the day before it would be a truly full moon, I headed to Crocker Park hoping to capture the Harvest Moon. I had checked the location of the moonrise and found that the timing and weather conditions were far better for the day before it became officially full. With that in mind, I also thought I would revisit an old favorite composition I captured from this spot almost ten years prior. I arrived at Crocker Park and found several families there as well as a few dogs on leashes. As the sun set, I captured a [...]

Sit for a Spell

It seems like forever since I was last out to shoot around Marblehead but, looking back, it had only been two weeks.  I had the day off and, once the rain cleared, found picture perfect conditions for a mid-day outing. I crossed the causeway and then stopped at the public ways and some other spots along the Neck to capture views of the harbor and boats under cumulous clouds. Chandler Hovey Park was a mid-journey stop and I arrived to find myself one of only three people out enjoying the wind coming off the water. The views towards Abbot were [...]

Summer Rainbows over the Causeway

If we are going to continue with temps in the high 80s this late in September, I may need to continue to revisit some favorites from this past summer that hadn't seen the light of day. On June 28, 2020, I headed to Riverhead Beach and was rewarded with a nearly perfect double rainbow forming over the causeway. The outing would last over an hour and include some incredible sunset images as well leading to a fairly large trough of images in the 'to be published' folder from this one summer evening.

Summer is Back

It was too early to have to deal with 40 degree mornings so I'm glad to see that summer is back at least for a few days of warmth. To celebrate, here is one of my favorite sunsets from last summer when I lucked out with perfect light after a boat ride around Marblehead harbor. Captured on July 19, 2019 at 8:24pm (hard to imaging with sunset now taking place around 6:30), I shot at the end of Village Street for only 5 minutes as the light peaked but came away with 6 keepers. This is the fifth one of [...]

Surfs Up Marblehead

Hurricane Teddy will miss the Eastern coast of the United States but is forecast to bring us high seas and strong winds that should create amazing surfing conditions today.  According to surf-forecast.com, Devereux Beach is supposed to hit a perfect 10 rating tonight with 15 foot wave heights and low tide conditions. I will definitely be heading to the beach with my longest lens hoping to capture a few surfers taking advantage of the conditions... Surfs Up Marblehead!

Lead Mills Foliage

The temperatures this weekend definitely made it feel as though fall was here (though the expected warmup later in the week will hopefully mean that summer hasn't let go of us yet). I couldn't help but notice a number of trees have already turned more than a month earlier than normal and I suspect that means a very fitful or staggered foliage season in Marblehead. This weekend, I looked back at images of past autumns and decided to share this one of the trees at Lead Mills caught at peak foliage from October 30, 2019. I cross Lafayette into town [...]

Smoky Sunset

With fires raging along the west coast, it was only a matter of time before the fine particulates made their way across the country to our next of the woods. Thankfully the result was limited to cloud-like conditions during the day. I had a hunch that the haze might create perfect conditions for capturing the sun as a red ball tonight so I drove across the causeway right after dinner to chase this image. As I drove, I spotted the sun in my rear view mirror and was please to find the red ball I had hoped for. From there [...]

Foggy Sunsets on the Harbor

I found this shot in the To Be Posted archive last night and figured it was about time it saw the light of day. I captured this shot almost exactly 4 years ago (Sept 20, 2016) from the low tide area accessible from Corinthian Lane. I walked the length of this stretch of the Neck until I found the composition I was looking for with the sun setting aside Abbot Hall, a pier to the left with its flag limp due to lack of wind and layers of boats in the harbor. The mix of fog and late sun created [...]
