Cloud Filled Sunset

What better way to start a new year of Wednesdays in Marblehead then with this cloud filled sunset over a harbor filled with boats.  Today's image was actually taken on a Tuesday evening (June 27th) as clouds filled the sky but left just enough space at the horizon for the setting sunlight to shine through and create a beautiful pink glow behind Abbot Hall.  You can also make out Grace Community Church and St. Michael's Steeple  towering over the familiar skyline. The benefit of these late sunsets is that I have plenty of time to come home after work, eat [...]

Seven Years of Wednesdays in Marblehead

On August 14, 2010, I created Wednesdays in Marblehead and posted my first image of the Marblehead fireworks taken just one month prior.  As a newcomer to town (we moved here in May 2008), I decided that the best way for me to learn about my new hometown was to photograph it.  I had a simple plan to shoot when I could and share an image once per week on Wednesdays (my day off from my regular job). What I failed to realize or consider at the time was just how much beauty there was to find within the 4.4 square [...]

Preston Beach, Marblehead, MA

On the same day that I captured yesterday's image of the last light on a harbor filled with boats, I had gone out to explore a few other areas in town with a birds eye view.  When I checked the tides after leaving the house and saw that we were close to the low tide mark, I decided to drive the short distance to Surf Street and fly over Preston Beach. Preston is easily my favorite Marblehead beach.  At low tide, it has the smoothest sand and it is a 10 minute walk from our house.  As I parked the [...]

Last Light on a Full Harbor

As I was finalizing my image choices for this year's Marblehead Calendar, I struggled with the options I had to best represent August.  I had an image of the causeway and Devereux Beach in mind but it didn't quite fit with this year's theme.  With that in mind, I decided to head out on Sunday to capture the last light on a full harbor. I launched the drone from Crocker Park having arrived as the sun was beginning to set.  The angle of the sun continued to shine light on nearly all of Marblehead Harbor as well as the Neck [...]

On Golden Harbor

Last September, I was fortunate to witness and capture views of Marblehead harbor as fog rolled in at sunset.  The result was a rapidly changing and incredibly beautiful scene that I took advantage of by shooting for almost an hour.  I've shared several images from the explosive sunset that followed but, as the sun remained above the horizon, it served to turn our familiar waters into a golden harbor. The view of these boats sitting moored in their spots on still waters made for a picture perfect scene.  I thought a bit of light might help push the gray morning [...]

Moonrise over Old Town House

I didn't think I had much of a chance for shooting the moon tonight, let alone finally capturing a moonrise over Old Town House.  I had gone out to capture Marblehead harbor using my drone and had decided to launch from Crocker Park for its unobstructed views and central location.  I ended up flying for 35 minutes and got some nice shots before heading back to my car.  I had spotted the full Sturgeon moon rising over the harbor but it had come up forty minutes before sunset and so had not projected much light by the time I had [...]

Framed by a Tree at Parker Lane

I was working on my 2018 calendar yesterday and think I have it almost finalized.  As I went through images from the past year to use for each month, I stumbled upon this photo in my 'to be published' folder. I had gone out to a familiar spot at the end of the public way on Parker Lane in early September for what turned out to be a very nice sunset.  Rather than running to the stairs and shooting the unobstructed view, I decided to stop and compose an image framed by a tree.  The full canopy of leaves worked [...]

Coming Home

Recently, I was at Chandler Hovey Park having chased some clouds and crossed my fingers for a decent sunset when I lucked out with this view of four sailboats coming home to Marblehead Harbor.  I arrived at the park just as the sun was about to dip below the horizon and jumped out of the car to find a good composition.  As luck would have it, these four lasers were coming into harbor and I moved onto the edge of the rocks to capture this image. I'm almost never without my tripod to make sure my images are level and [...]

Star of the Sea

Last week, as I flew my drone to capture images of a baseball game at Seaside Park, I also noted the Star of the Sea church and its lush border of trees.  I had never appreciated from the ground just how many trees cover this area of land along Atlantic Avenue.  From the air, it was hard to ignore the canopy of trees and so I decided to compose this image to highlight the trees as much as the gothic architecture of the Catholic church. You can easily make out Abbot Hall breaking through the horizon and a hint of [...]

Sunshine and Daydream on a Sunday Afternoon

On Sunday afternoon, I headed out of the house and across the causeway in the hopes of flying my drone over the NOOD race taking place in the waters off Marblehead.  The winds were too strong and the boats too far for my comfort level so I turned around at Castle Rock and headed back down Ocean Avenue.  As I did, I looked to my left and spotted three boats anchored just off shore and each with a clear view of the Boston skyline. I shot each boat and couldn't make out their names until I got home.  When I [...]
