Optis Racing during Marblehead Junior Race Week

Marblehead Junior Race Week took place this week and between the weather and work, I hadn't had a chance to shoot any images of the Optis racing off Marblehead harbor.  I had captured a 'gaggle' of Optis as I had called them in 2013 when I hitched a ride aboard a zodiac and, with the new freedom of a drone, I was looking forward to new images of these tiny boats racing off Marblehead Neck. MJRW began on July 23rd (too windy for the drone), continued on the 24th and 25th (rain, winds and work) and finished up on the [...]

Reflections at Chandler Hovey Park

From the same night as yesterdays post (literally taken 34 seconds before), comes this image of Marblehead Light captured in a reflection from a recent storm.  As I mentioned yesterday, I chased clouds between storms out to Chandler Hovey Park and spent a few minutes shooting the lighthouse with boats coming into the harbor.  I then spotted a puddle created from the rain that had just ended and captured this shot of the lighthouse reflected in the mirror-like surface. As luck would have it, another person was photographing the sunset and their pose at the base of the lighthouse almost [...]

Lasers at Sunset

Last week, I chased the clouds out to Chandler Hovey Park and was rewarded with a nice sunset.  As the light hit its peak, three Lasers came into the harbor.  Since Marblehead Junior Race Week began yesterday and continues for the next few days, I thought this image of Lasers at sunset would be a perfect one to share today.

Baseball by the Harbor at Seaside Park

When I drove down Atlantic Avenue on Sunday and spotted the sign for a Seasiders baseball game set to start at 5pm, I decided to return with my Phantom 4 Pro and capture the view of baseball by the harbor at Seaside park.  I had captured this baseball field on Atlantic Avenue a number of times but was looking forward to an aerial view that would show the proximity of the field to Marblehead Harbor behind it and the rest of the town. I launched the drone from the lot across the street and hovered overhead while waiting (and hoping) [...]

Golden Masts in Marblehead Harbor

This seemed like a good image to finish off the week with a view of golden masts in Marblehead Harbor reflecting the last glow of sunset.  I had gone out on June 22nd in the hopes of capturing a nice sunset and was treated to a very nice pink-orange one.  I had decided to set up with my 'real' camera as well as launch the Phantom 4 Pro and I took turns composing images from above and below as the sun set and washed Marblehead in beautiful light. While the sun was still above the horizon, I concentrated on capturing [...]

Mother Nature’s Fireworks

I couldn't post yesterday's image of fireworks without immediately recalling the display of Mother Nature's fireworks on June 27th.  I shared an incredible image of multiple bolts as soon as I came home but had a few more captures from that night that I had wanted to share as well. This was the last shot I took on that evening.  The sun had long since set and my exposure time was getting longer.  At this point I had to up the camera ISO to 1600 to keep a reasonable shutter speed of 1.3 seconds. Thankfully, it was calm that night [...]

Independence Day in Marblehead

I hope no one is tired of images from Independence Day in Marblehead.  Having decided to shoot from the Pleon pier this year, I had almost too many vantage points from which to capture the incredible display.  I shared my favorite shot of fireworks and an image of the harbor illumination but in this image, I was able to capture both (plus an illuminated Marblehead Light as a bonus). As this shot was taken early in the festivities (9:06pm), the flares were still going strong.  You can easily see the bright red glow along the edge of the pier but [...]

Looking toward Barnegat

A few weeks ago, a picture perfect sky dotted with cumulous clouds passed over Marblehead and I decided to fly my Phantom 4 Pro to take advantage of the conditions.  I had shot over Castle Rock and the Neck earlier in the day and returned home to recharge batteries and grab a quick bite.  As the clouds were still plentiful at 4:00pm, I headed out again - this time to historic downtown. I was trying to decide an a location from which to fly as I drove down Washington Street and pulled into the Old North Church parking lot which [...]

Unforgettable Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

On any other night, this unforgettable sunset over Marblehead Harbor would have been shared as soon as I returned home.  However, June 27th wasn't quite like any other night and I had an incredible lightning storm as well as a rainbow over Castle Rock to share before getting to this image. I had actually started shooting an hour earlier at Chandler Hovey park as a lightning storm passed through town.  When the rain hit, I raced to my car and waited for the next storm to arrive.  I had little hope for a break in the clouds and, when the [...]

Castle Rock at the End of the Rainbow

I have more fireworks and harbor illumination images to share but I thought this was a perfect shot to end the week with.  On June 27, Marblehead was hit by two lightning storms and as, one passed and another approached, the sky cleared to allow sunlight and the inevitable rainbow. I was parked at Chandler Hovey Park and was fixated on flying my drone to catch a rainbow.  As the drone cannot be flown in wet conditions, I was waiting for the drizzle to stop and didn't think of using the real camera beside me until my wife texted me [...]
