Full Moon over Fort Beach

It's hard to believe that I haven't shot the full moon rising in Marblehead since this image captured in mid-July.  Weather is mostly to blame with many of the full moons having been hidden behind thick cloud cover over the past few months.  However, with most full moon risings, I have tried to capture the scene from more than one perspective. On this night, I had managed to get the moon placed perfectly over Marblehead Light and then walked down to Fort Beach while there was still enough light in the sky to capture this wider view including the boats [...]

Harvest Moon and Marblehead Harbor

One more image from September 2013 to finish off this short week.  With the Jewish New Year upon us, I will be taking a break from the site for the next few days. I have shared a wider image (and the full story) of how I came to be on a rooftop while the Harvest moon rose over a full Marblehead Harbor.  You can read that story by clicking the image below.  As the moon rose, I tried a number of compositions and liked this zoomed in view a lot but held off sharing it at the time as it [...]

Watching the Moon Rise from Fort Sewall

By popular demand - an image of the full moon rise from Fort Sewall captured on July 11, 2014.  When I go out to shoot, I will often return with several images that I want to share.  Such was the case with the full moon rise of July 11-12.  On that first night, I had hoped for a new composition of the moon rising over Chandler Hovey Park as seen from Fort Sewall and achieved that when I used the leaves of the great tree at the Fort to frame this shot. However, moments later, the Glover's Regiment began their [...]

Supermoon Rises over Marblehead Light

Since the 'true' supermoon over 2011, it seems that each year we have more and more appearances of the so-called supermoon.  The term originally was meant for the full moon which was at its closest proximity to the earth in nearly two decades and thus would appear 17% larger.  The supermoons now are labels added to the closest proximity of the moon to the Earth for a given year.  In 2014, we are due to have three such supermoons. With that being said, I am always up for capturing an image of a full moon over Marblehead (supermoon or not).  [...]

Dinghy Under the Moon at Sunset

This seemed like a perfect image to start off what is supposed to be a beautiful, warm, Summer weekend.  The image comes from the evening of June 2nd and a trip to the Rockett Landing off Village Street.  I shared a photo captured from the top of the pier earlier but had taken this one shortly before walking back up to the road. I was struck by the light first and foremost and decided on a vertical orientation so that the crescent moon could be included in the final frame with the dinghy tied up for the night.

Full Moon over Brown’s Island

Today's image comes from July 2013 when I headed out to capture the full moon (aka buck moon) rising over Brown's island.  This marks the 38th image of a full moon shared on my website. On this particular outing, the moon remained mostly hidden behind a layer of haze.  This image was the best capture of the full moon as it rose over the tree at Brown's Island and as a sailboat passed in the distance. The moon has been such a common theme that I have devoted an entire gallery to images including the moon as an element.  You [...]

Snow Moon rises over snow covered Marblehead Neck

I mentioned on Monday's post that I had gone out after work Friday (Valentine's Day) in hopes of capturing the February snow moon. I arrived at Crocker Park in time to capture a great pink sunset over Marblehead harbor and a few other scenes of snow that I will share in the days to come. Well after the sun had set and the moon had risen, I had yet to find it in the night sky. I checked and rechecked my apps meant to help track the moon's path but it was nowhere to be seen. I got back in [...]

The Cold Moon sets over Marblehead Harbor

For those who may not have heard, I broke my left foot a few weeks ago (very lame story) and was sure that, with the coming of Winter, I would hang up the camera for a 4 week hiatus.  I continued to post photos taken from immediately prior to the accident but felt there was no way I would make it out for anything new and exciting. On Monday, December 16, my wife texted me while I was at work commenting on how incredible the moon had appeared that night.  I had totally forgotten about the full moon (not that [...]

Beaver Moon rising over Marblehead Harbor

I almost forgot about the full Beaver moon rising this weekend.  I only realized it thanks to some timely Facebook posts by others and then quickly began scouting locations from which to capture the rise.  The angles the the full moon takes seem to get tougher as we get into the Winter months and I ended up deciding to shoot from the Boston Yacht Club on this particular day.  Though the moon was going to be full on Sunday, Nov 17, the conditions that night didn't seem to allow for a shot so I headed out on Saturday at 3:30pm [...]

The Harvest Moon rises over Marblehead Harbor

The Harvest Moon was due to rise tonight and I had been racking my head trying to decide on a new vantage point from which to capture the year's best full moon.  Last year, I had taken an image from Crocker Park and lucked out as the tree there had just started to change color owing to an early cold snap.  This year, I planned to include more of the harbor and figured on shooting from the State Street Landing. I circled twice to find parking and finally had to stop in the Crosby's lot (shhh...don't tell).  I then walked [...]
