Marblehead Christmas Walk – Waiting for Traffic to Clear

One last image from this year's Marblehead Christmas Walk.  Shortly after capturing Glover's Regiment marching up State Street, they stopped and stood and waited for traffic to clear.  I had my camera aimed at the regiment and missed what led to the stoppage but was thankful for the respite as I was able to snag one more image of the group with their historical attire.  Each member has such a unique expression on his face as they all peer out wondering what might be holding up the parade.

Marblehead Christmas Walk – Glover’s Regiment Crossing the Harbor

I mentioned in Tuesday's post that Glover's regiment set about re-enacting George Washington crossing the Delaware river after the Christmas Walk parade concluded.  I set off for State Street Landing to capture the scene but quickly moved away from the crowd for this spot down near the harbormaster's pier.  I had realized there was no way to capture Glover's Regiment crossing Marblehead harbor without modern boats visible from the State Street Landing.  This location afforded just that view. I waited as the regiment boarded and then made their way out to mid-harbor.  There I was able to capture them with Marblehead [...]

Marblehead Christmas Walk – Santa Waves to the Gathering Crowd

As the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk parade came to a close, Santa and Mrs. Claus turned the corner onto Washington Street waving to the gathered crowd.  With the unseasonable warm temperatures, the crowd was quite large this year and I decided to focus on Santa as he waved while trying to capture the size of the crowd lined up along Washington Street as well as Abbot Hall in the distance. The final image seemed to capture what is so special about Marblehead and this time of year - a perfect mix of holiday and tradition carried through in the present [...]

Marblehead Christmas Walk – Shots Fired at the Landing

After the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk parade concluded, my family and I walked the streets of historic downtown before heading home.  At 2:30pm, I ventured out again as Glover's regiment was due to re-enact George Washington's crossing of the Delaware.  I headed to the State Street landing where I made it just in time to capture the regiment firing three volleys from their muskets. I captured a lot of smoke in the first two volleys and quickly adjusted my settings in hopes of capturing some fire during the third.  Sure enough, I caught two eruptions of orange flame as shots [...]

Marblehead Christmas Walk – Marching up State Street

The annual Marblehead Christmas walk took place this weekend and, between the parade and Glover's regiment re-enactment of the crossing of the Delaware, I ended up with five images I wanted to share with you.  So all of this week will feature images from this year's Marblehead Christmas walk festivities. First up is this image of Glover's regiment marching up State Street.  I forgot that the fire department leads the parade in one of their trucks and therefore had to make a last minute change in my plans to capture Glover's regiment marching up State Street.  I quickly crossed the street and took [...]

Firing the Sunset Cannon

This is the third variation of the sunset cannon being fired at the Eastern Yacht Club that I've shared on this site.  The first was a part of a collection that made its way into my book exploring how each of the yacht clubs celebrates this unique Marblehead tradition.  The second explored the view of the sunset cannon being fired with Marblehead Light in the background.  On this date, I had gone out to shoot the sunset and ended up at the Pleon Yacht Club.  As the sunset petered out, I made my way a bit early to the car [...]

Firing the Cannon at the Eastern Yacht Club

As luck would have it, I was finishing off the evening's photo outing just as sunset approached and the nightly tradition of colors and firing the cannon commenced.  I spent last Summer capturing this tradition at each of the yacht clubs in town.  For the prior version at the Eastern Yacht Club, I had composed the image to include Abbot Hall in the background.  I realized on this night, I could capture the view of the cannon being fired at sunset with Marblehead Light in the distance. As the light dimmed, I set up for this shot and again closed [...]

Sunset Salute at Fort Sewall by Glover’s Regiment

This weekend, Glover's Regiment held their annual encampment at Fort Sewall.  The timing would prove to be perfect with incredible weather throughout the weekend and a supermoon making its appearance on successive clear nights.  I couldn't wait to share two images of the full moon this weekend but this image was an easy choice for next up to share. As I waited for the supermoon to rise on Friday night, I overheard some members of Glover's Regiment discussing a sunset salute.  The thought of capturing a volley of musket fire over Marblehead Harbor trumped any planned images of the moon [...]

Glover’s Regiment Marching Under the Full Moon

Every Summer, Glover's Regiment has an encampment at Fort Sewall with reenactments of battles between the Loyalists/Red Coats and the Regiment.  It so happened that this year's encampment would take place during the Full Buck Moon.  I had a few ideas in mind and so I headed out to Fort Sewall on Friday night with my family to watch a piece of Marblehead history and hoped for good conditions. The full moon rose on a beautiful warm Summer night and the timing of the rise in relation to sunset meant there were plenty of pinks and purples in the sky [...]
