Expanding on yesterday's post about seeing out new places at the right time, I ventured down Edgemere Road to explore the private beach at sunset. I had visited this spot once before but did so at low tide which did not lend itself to properly capturing this scene. I returned on a cloudless sunset and viewed the serene scene before me. I opted to shoot toward a nearby pier and was pleased to find a waiting boat illuminated by the light of the setting sun.
I made a list a few weeks ago to review areas in town that I had not yet shot or had wanted to shoot under different conditions. On that list was sunset at Stramski's beach. I had a chance to visit this area on Friday and was disappointed at first by the cloudless sky. I tried shooting toward the setting sun but couldn't find an angle I liked. We just spent a great four hours at Devereux Beach taking part in the Rotary Great Race. At the conclusion, a rubber duck race took place in an awesome pond built under the awning at Devereux. The ducks had a strong push from the wind and the gas powered wind blower. Here's a shot as the pink and blue ducks floated by the beautiful end-of-Summer day.
The Full Moon was due to rise on Saturday, August 13th but clouds threatened to block its ascent. I plotted out where the Sturgeon moon was due to rise and struggled with a landmark that would capture the town of Marblehead as well as the beauty of moonrise. Finding these lifeguard chairs on Devereux beach last week was a very pleasant surprise. Having great light to work with as I sought out to capture them was an even better one. Here is another image of the newly painted lifeguard chairs on Devereuex beach. This is chair 1 standing guard near the end of the beach with a view of the causeway and the Neck in the background.
So this is my favorite shot from the 'study' of the newly painted lifeguard chairs at devereux beach. The sun was still high enough in the sky to paint the back of the chair with a rich red. This was one of a number of attempts to catch a seagull in the frame and I couldn't have asked for better placement. Note that no food or photoshop was used to lure/place the seagull in its rightful location.
This weekend I noticed that the normally white lifeguard chairs at Devereux beach had been painted red with an added Red Cross behind them. I made a note to come back and shoot them and was fortunate to have time on Saturday night to do so. Even better were the colors of sunset that added a beautiful pink hue to the clouds over the ocean. I have a number of favorite shots from this night and will be posting more this week. I had just remarked to my wife about the relative paucity of lightning and thunderstorms in Marblehead when a monster of a storm swept through town. I tried to capture shots of lightning at Chandler Hovey park within the safety of the lighthouse initially. After that failed, I drove by Devereux and witnessed explosions of light to the south. For the next hour, I tried to capture the power and beauty of this storm as the number of spectators rapidly grew. At times, the show rivaled our fireworks display in the number of bursts. Every May, the carnival takes over Devereux beach as a fundraiser for the senior class. Without fail, rain always follows. It was with astonishment then that I saw the clouds clear way and the sun take form over the carnival grounds. A bit of smooth-talking got me a pass from the carnies to the top of the Super Slide and a unique vantage point from which to shoot. Two additional shots follow below.
