Chasing Waterfalls

In June of 2012, I had gotten it in my mind that I could capture waterfalls in Marblehead by climbing out to the ledge at Castle Rock and focusing on the rock edge as waves broke upon it.  As the water cascaded over the edge it formed (ever briefly) a small waterfall. By extending the shutter speed to 1/5th of a second, the water droplets were smoothed to form that familiar shape of water falling.  Processing the final image in black and white allowed those textures to take center stage in the photo.

Tree of Life

In late May of 2013, I had gone out on a foggy morning looking for a new spot to shoot.  As I drove around town, I found myself going past the Star of the Sea cemetery and quickly pulled over when I saw this incredible tree among the headstones. It was difficult getting the full size of the tree in the frame while also finding a good foreground element to anchor the image.  The decision to process the final shot as black and white was easy in comparison.

Iron and Granite

It's been a while since I last shared a black and white image of Marblehead on this site.  In mid-September, I had rented a super wide angle lens from Canon and went about exploring new compositions and vantage points in town to take full advantage of my short week with the lens. On this day, I had chased the clouds throughout Marblehead and ended up at Chandler Hovey Park.  I had just worked on a few shots of Marblehead Light with a sunstar erupting beside it and then hiked down to explore the possibilities from the granite edge of the [...]

Lost in the Fog at Parker Lane

I don't believe I have shared a black and white image in a while so I thought this shot would be a good one to end the week.  Parker Lane is one of my favorite public ways in town and I have recently shared a number of images captured from this location.  I've always walked right under this tree and on to the steps leading to the beach below but, on this day, I stopped and took in the canopy of leaves overhead. As luck would have it, a dense fog had rolled in and I decided to take advantage [...]

Under the Bridge

Another converted infrared image from a bike ride around town on June 15, 2014.  This image was taken 30 minutes before the one at Redd's Pond as I made my way along the rail trail towards downtown. I've shot from under this bridge previously but, this time, was interested in the effect that infrared would have in highlighting the foliage along the trail and some of the graffiti below the bridge. Can't wait for the weather to warm up and all the snow to melt so that I can head out on my bike again.

Gerry Island in the Fog

Continuing this week's black and white theme comes this image from May 5, 2012.  We had fog again to coincide with the carnival being in town and I had been shooting at Fort Sewall when I looked out and noted it was high tide.  I quickly made my way down Fort Beach Lane and to this location where I could shoot Gerry Island in the fog. I decided to take advantage of the thick fog and leave a lot of negative space above the island to add to the mood of isolation.  You can just make out a reflection of [...]

Sailboats at Redds Pond

Continuing this week's theme of black and white images of Marblehead comes this scene from Redd's Pond captured on June 15, 2014.  I had been out capturing images using my old dSLR converted to shoot in infrared and had happened upon a few sailboats at Redd's Pond. The infrared image serves to accentuate the foliage in the trees and sails on the boats while pushing the blue sky and water towards deeper shades of black when converted to black and white. You can see other black and white images in this gallery:

Bleachers in the Fog at Seaside Park

In early December of 2011, a thick fog descended on Marblehead.  I had an image in mind at Seaside park that would work best with fog and headed down there to see if the conditions were right. As it turned out, the fog was even thicker that I had hoped for and set up the scene perfectly.  I used the metal bleachers as a leading line toward the wooden covered ones just beyond. I decided to make this a 'black and white week' so you can look forward to more images of Marblehead in black and white in the days [...]

On Frozen Harbor

On Wednesday, February 18, I headed down to Marblehead Harbor to capture images of it frozen over after a near-record 15 days of below freezing temperatures.  What struck me most were the intricate textures and designs that had formed in the ice. I've shared some images from this outing but, in this one, I decided to use a vertical composition and processed it in black and white to help highlight the textures and patterns in the frozen harbor.

A Magical Night on State Street

Lately I've been sharing a lot more images of the sea and, with that in mind, decided to look through the 'to be posted' file in search of an image that broke the recent trend. This image was captured on a particularly magical night on State Street on December 5th, 2013.  This is one of many black and white images of fog that came out of the evening's shoot throughout town.  I had a tough time deciding between color and black and white for this particular image as there is a decorated tree at the bottom right that seems to disappear [...]
