Fire in the Sky – Heat Wave is Coming

I had missed out on a surprisingly vibrant sunset on Wednesday night and made up for it with tonight's fire in the sky that erupted over the Village street pier. We had been out on a friend's new boat for a tour around the harbor and just returned when I spotted the makings of a nice sunset. At exactly the same moment, my son asked for a ride home so he could meet up with friends. I had my camera with me for shooting the harbor and drove back with an eye to the sky the entire time. As we [...]

Summer Storm in Marblehead

This may not be the first summer storm in Marblehead but it's the first one I was here for and, luckily enough, happened on a Wednesday so I was free to head to the Neck to try to capture some bolts of lightning. I was watching the clouds and radar all afternoon and headed out when the storm approached flanking Marblehead to the north and south. I started off at Castle Rock but kept missing the lightning there and so I packed up and headed to Chandler Hovey Park. I waited for a bit and then spotted the first bolt [...]

Marblehead Fourth

This will be the first year since moving to Marblehead that I will miss the annual fireworks show. With that in mind, I thought I would share an image from last year's show that was years in the making and ended up offering me a completely new prospective on a Marblehead Fourth of July celebration. I purchased my drone several years ago and, shortly thereafter, obtained my drone pilot license for commercial photography. It was then that I realized what hurdles I would need to pass in order to realize this shot that I had envisioned. I had to devise [...]

Inner Harbor

On July 3rd, 2013, I made my way to Crocker Park to scout out the location for capturing the fireworks show that would follow the next night. I lucked out with cumulous clouds over the Neck and causeway and captured several images of a full Marblehead harbor with boats lit by the 4pm sun and clouds breaking up the sky overhead. I struggled in coming up with the proper term for this part of the harbor. Thanks to Erin Noonan on my Facebook Page for suggesting 'Inner Harbor'.

October Sunrise

How about a beautiful October sunrise from 2017 to start this Friday? With some of these photos, I need to look back and see why I had not chosen them to share first. In this case, the image was taken literally 20 seconds before the peak light when I zoomed in and captured what felt was the stronger photo. Enjoy this one that has been sitting in the To Be Published folder since October 7th 2017.

Dyaynu

Who knew that photographers could get tennis elbow (more accurately, lateral epicondylitis)? I’m finally accepting that the pain in my elbow is not going to disappear without proper rest. As the old adage goes, ‘physician heal thyself’, so I’m going to put away the camera for the next few weeks until this is gone. It’s going to be hard not to chase sunsets but I have plenty of images of Marblehead that have not seen the light of day and will share those in the weeks to come - just with far shorter stories to save on typing (after this [...]

Red Sun at Night

Tonight marked my third outing this week which is a huge improvement over the rest of the month of May. I had spotted a red sun setting behind the clouds and haze tonight and headed out with my longest lens to the Pleon pier on the Neck. I arrived just in time to capture a few frames of the red sun at night before it was hidden by thicker cloud cover. It was hard to balance the light of the sun with that of the foreground while keeping the red glow evident. This was my best attempt of the evening.

Moored in the Glow

I mentions on Wednesday night that I had run out of the house when the sky threatened to do something other than be gray...again. I shared the shot of Castle Rock from after sunset when the light shifted. This was the scene where I started shooting off Harvard Street.  At one point, the clouds overhead must have thinned out and let through a little sunset light which then reflected off the water in Marblehead Harbor. I was fortunate to find a single boat moored in the glow of that strange evening light.
