Warm Nights and Purple Sunsets

Today's image comes from August 1, 2011 and was taken at 8:11pm as the sun set over another warm Summer day in Marblehead.  There's something about those warm nights that seem to lend themselves to these purple sunsets.  I don't recall seeing them nearly as often during the rest of the year. Won't be much longer before boats begin to fill Marblehead Harbor.

Ready for Summer in Marblehead

I'm ready for Summer in Marblehead - are you? I thought Winter had loosened its grip on us but last week brought a bit more snow and a lot more cold (bitterly so at times).  With that in mind, I dove into my 'To Be Posted' archive and found this picture perfect depiction of a late Summer day in Marblehead.  The image of boats filling Marblehead Harbor comes from high tide atop the causeway.  Though the photo breaks one of the rules of photography (never put a horizon line in the center), there was too much in the foreground (rocks [...]

Frostbite Sailing in Marblehead Harbor

This image of frostbite sailing in Marblehead Harbor comes from a pleasantly warm Sunday on March 3, 2013.  The temperature had hit the lower 40s and I was out exploring Crocker Park when I spotted this group of sonars going through maneuvers within Marblehead Harbor. Frostbite sailing is such a unique tradition for Marblehead and I highly recommend experiencing it in person from Crocker Park or Marblehead Neck.  Sailing takes place on Sundays typically starting on November 11th and continues until the end of April.

A Spring Thaw on Marblehead Harbor

On Sunday, March 8, I awoke at 6:30am completely confused about whether I had gotten too little or too much sleep as we entered Daylight Savings Time.  Whichever the case might have been (it was too little by the way), I decided to take advantage and rush out of the house to capture the dawn and sunrise. The last time I had captured images of Marblehead Harbor was the morning on February 18th when I found the harbor had frozen for the first time in years.  With that in mind, I headed to one of my favorite spots for a [...]

Working Boats under a Winter Sunset

Well, it happened again ;-) - a day of ocean effect snow and dreary grey skies began to clear right at 4:00pm.  I had to drop off my son somewhere so I grabbed my tripod and camera bag and decided to see if my luck might hold for a second evening. I had a very hard time deciding where to shoot.  I drove across the causeway and back again, down State Street and over to Front Street before doubling back.  I finally ended up at the Landing and made my way over near the Harbormaster's office. From there I could shoot toward [...]

Boats and Scaffolding

As the scaffolding around Abbot Hall slowly comes down, I wanted to revisit this image from September captured during a low tide that allowed me to walk up to one of the floats in the harbor. From the Rooftops – The Corinthian, Harbor and Boston Skyline

This image comes from a trip to the top of Marblehead Light on July 2nd during the semi-annual stringing of the holiday lights.  I have shared a few images from this location but hadn't yet shown this one which features the Corinthian Yacht Club with a pool filled to capacity, Marblehead Harbor with boats as far as the eye can see and, in the distance, the Boston skyline. Explosion of Color in Marblehead Harbor

Summer sunsets have to be one of my favorite subjects to photograph.  Heading out on a warm evening chasing after whisps of clouds and waiting for each evening's show brings a sense of anticipation that is usually well rewarded. On this evening in June, there was an explosion of color in Marblehead Harbor with the sky above moving through shades of pinks and purples that lasted for what felt like an eternity.  Seemed like a nice image to turn to on this December day. Full Moon over Fort Beach

It's hard to believe that I haven't shot the full moon rising in Marblehead since this image captured in mid-July.  Weather is mostly to blame with many of the full moons having been hidden behind thick cloud cover over the past few months.  However, with most full moon risings, I have tried to capture the scene from more than one perspective. On this night, I had managed to get the moon placed perfectly over Marblehead Light and then walked down to Fort Beach while there was still enough light in the sky to capture this wider view including the boats [...]

Golden Light over Marblehead Harbor

This image comes from the end of July and some incredible clouds that formed over Marblehead Harbor.  As the sun began to set, the golden hour set in and this singular cloud was bathed in golden light. Don't forget the Annual Christmas Walk takes place this weekend! I will be signing my Wednesdays in Marblehead book at the following locations: Saturday, December 6 from 12:30pm - 1:30pm - Marblehead Museum Saturday, December 6 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm - Spirit of '76 Bookstore Sunday, December 7 from 12:30pm - 2:00pm - Arnould Gallery
