Crocker Park Concerts – Marblehead Festival of Arts

Last night, I flew my drone across Marblehead harbor for this aerial view of the Crocker Park concerts.  I had gone out to shoot the sunset and was torn between heading the Crocker Park to capture it over the Neck while listening to some good music or shooting from the Neck and using the drone to capture the view at Crocker Park. I ended up deciding on the latter and was thankful for the flexibility that the drone offers. I was quite literally shooting sunsets with the real camera while taking photos of the Crocker Park concerts all while taking [...]

Pink Rainbow and the Chestnut Tree

On May 23rd, I visited Crocker Park in the hopes of finding a new composition for the chestnut tree that had reached full bloom. As luck would have it, a storm passed over the park just before sunset and led to this pink rainbow forming over Marblehead Neck. I had shared a shot of the rainbow over the harbor the night I captured the image. Within a minute of taking that image, I had scrambled to this spot from which I could compose an image including the chestnut tree and its blossoms fighting for the viewer's eye with the unique [...]

Crocker Park Sunset

Once the storm passed and the rainbow disappeared on Wednesday night, I started looking for sunset compositions. I found myself poorly positioned to capture the best light from my position at Crocker Park and luckily had planned ahead by bringing the drone. I was up and over the waters of Marblehead Harbor in minutes and flew to this position from which to capture a beautiful Crocker park sunset.

Rainbow Watching at Crocker Park

Well that was unexpected! I had gone by Crocker Park earlier today to check out the chestnut tree and made plans to return before sunset. I arrived with an hour to spare and hung out at the park watching the sky darken. I checked my radar app and saw that a rapidly moving storm was heading our way. I waited out the rain under the gazebo and quickly adjusted my plan. I put a circular polarizer on the lens and crossed my fingers that the sun would pop out before the rain passed to create a rainbow.  At 7:52pm, a [...]

The Chestnut Tree

In May 2016, I happened to go to Crocker Park one evening and found the large chestnut tree there to be in full bloom. I had never seen these flowers before and captured them on a few evenings in varying light and with different compositions. This is the last one I had in the 'to be posted' file. Guess I'll have to visit again in the next few days to see if it has blossomed.

Gazebo at Sunset

As the blizzard takes shape outside on this mid-March morning, I just couldn't stomach posting an image of snow.  Instead, I turned to this incredible night at Crocker Park from late November. I had been shooting as the sun fell near Abbot Hall but noticed the best of the sunset color was quickly moving out of my composition. I walked back and found the gazebo at Crocker Park perfectly positioned under the peak light of sunset.  Without a flake of snow on the ground, this seemed like a much better image to start off this day. I'm sure I'll have [...]

November Sunset at Crocker Park

Last night, I watched the clouds take shape over Marblehead and decided to head out just before sunset to capture what promised to be a good show.  I had a tough time deciding on a destination and ended up at the Landing.  I shot from near the Harbormaster's station until the light began to fade over the harbor and looked over my shoulder only to find an explosion of color over Crocker Park. I ran up Mariner Lane, across Front Street and then behind the Herreschoff Castle to reach my favorite spot at Crocker Park.  I quickly set up the [...]

Hint of Fall at Crocker Park

The last image from Saturday's dawn visit to Crocker Park illustrates this year's lackluster foliage season (thus far).  I had just walked up from my spot where I captured three great images of dawn when I turned to look at this familiar tree.  I had found the early fall season to be disappointing as far as foliage goes - likely due to the dry and too-warm conditions (though I'm not complaining about either of those). As I mentioned yesterday, the sun had disappeared behind thickening clouds and I was able to grab just a bit of sunrise color behind the [...]

Floating under the Light of the Moon

Tonight's moonrise was quite a sight to behold and I was thankful for a last minute decision to capture the full corn moon rising over the float at Crocker Park.  I had originally planned to capture the moon from along Front Street but arrived to find a seemingly thick marine layer that I was sure would block the composition I had in mind. I made a quick decision to head to Crocker Park instead and arrived in plenty of time to set up.  As I got to the float, I noticed the sign listing the dates of operation as June [...]
