First Lite in Marblehead Harbor

On Thanksgiving morning, the conditions seemed right for a dawn/sunrise shoot and so I woke up early and headed down to the State Street landing area.  I ended up walking to the end of Ferry Lane and set up to capture the sunrise in front of the Harbormaster office. I began shooting four lobster boats lined up in front of Marblehead Neck and the lighthouse with great clouds reflecting the morning light.  As the light built, I turned toward the causeway and composed this image with a single boat.  The light was beautiful at this point in the morning and [...]

Warm Summer Mornings on Marblehead Harbor

As the days get shorter and colder, it's nice to look back and remember these warm Summer mornings on Marblehead harbor. This image comes from an outing in late-August.  I shared a similar image from this set when I first captured it.  In that one, the sun had risen and the green light atop Marblehead Light had extinguished.  The difference in the two images (taken 3 minutes apart) is pretty amazing. Here is the other for comparison:

Purple Dawn over Marblehead

On the morning of October 8, a lunar eclipse was set to take place right at moonset/sunrise offering the chance to capture a 'blood red moon'.  Unfortunately, the skies were not cooperating when I arrived at Chandler Hovey Park and found thick cloud cover at the horizon as a storm passed just to the north of us. While I waited and hoped for a break in the clouds, the morning sun lit up the clouds in a brilliant purple hue.  There was very little light to work with and, even with a fairly high ISO of 800, the shutter speed [...]

Morning Light on Little Harbor

On Sunday, October 5th, I had set out early to capture images of the dawn and then made my way to a few locations in Marblehead showing early (and beautiful) Fall colors.  I shared five images from this one hour photo shoot last week but have a few more in the 'to be posted' archive that I really liked. After parking on Beacon Street and surveying the scene of Little Harbor before me, I was a little disappointed in the clear sky and had little hope for the morning.  I did notice a few subtle clouds high above but did [...]

Dawn over Little Harbor

The last image for the week is also one of the very first I captured on this Sunday morning.  I had parked along Beacon Street and saw this simple scene laid out before me of dawn over Little Harbor I have to admit that I didn't have much hope for a brilliant sunrise at the time with the heavy bank of clouds near the horizon but the clouds overhead did wonders for reflecting the morning light (images to be shared in the weeks to come). Hope you enjoyed the five images shared this week - all captured in the span [...]

Waiting for a Ride in Marblehead Harbor

It's interesting to watch the traffic in Marblehead Harbor during the morning blue hour as the sunrise approaches.  On this particular Sunday, I had gone out in hopes of interesting skies left over from the intense lightning storm that seemed to signal the end of Summer.  While the scene before me was calm and peaceful, I quickly lost hope for a brilliant sunrise that would explode in colors over the harbor. Instead, as I waited on the light, I noted someone waiting at the end of a float at State Street landing.  With the minimal light, I had to shoot [...]

M is for Marblehead

Another image from Sunday's dawn and sunrise photoshoot at Crocker Park.  I had just captured those great clouds overlooking Marblehead Harbor in the deepest part of the blue hour and the light had not yet brightened enough over Marblehead Light and so I decided to walk up to the grassy area at Crocker Park.  Almost immediately, I found those some clouds hovering between the gazebo and Abbot Hall in the distance. As you may know, Abbot Hall is currently undergoing some restorative work on its tower and, as such, scaffolding and red netting have surrounded the iconic structure.  With the [...]

Dawn of the Summer Season

The unofficial start of the Summer season begins at dawn on Memorial Day as captured in this image taken at Crocker Park.  Yesterday I posted the first image from my Memorial Day dawn shoot at Crocker Park with a beautiful crescent moon hanging over Marblehead Light.  This was one of the last images I took on that morning. The light kept building but an unfortunate cloud bank kept the sun from entering the scene as I kept trying out varying compositions.  At 5:10 am (40 minutes after the crescent moon image), the light finally heat its peak. I sought to [...]

Leave the Light On under a Crescent Moon

I went to sleep on Sunday night after checking forecasts for the morning and thinking there was a descent chance at a good sunrise.  The chance wasn't quite high enough for me to set an alarm but I figured that if I woke in time, I would head out the door. Sure enough I woke at 4am and took that as a sign of good things to come.  I had mapped out the direction of the sunrise and decided that Crocker Park would offer the best vantage point.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how much Marblehead Harbor had filled [...]
