Dawn Lights up the Foliage in Salem Harbor

On Tuesdays, I have to be at work by 7:30am for early appointments and to supervise allergen immunotherapy.  Most of the time, that ends up on either end of the sunrise and dawn but, twice a year, I manage to cross Lafayette Street at just the right time.  This year, I had been keeping my eye on the trees that line the rail trail and Salem Harbor waiting for them to show some signs of changing color.  The color seemed to come on this week and I decided to head back at some point to capture it. When Tuesday rolled [...]

Foliage in the Fog at Waterside Cemetery

Last night I had a bit of writer's block (or whatever the equivalent is called).  I sat in front of my computer scrolling through the 383 images of Marblehead that are in my 'to be posted' folder and just could not decide on a theme, let alone an image.  I put the question up on my FB page and the first five responses were for: sun, fog, foliage, ocean, architectural detail.  Given the time of year, I opted to go with foliage and found this image with some fog and (it's a stretch) architectural detail in the form of the [...]

Turning Leaves at Herreshoff Castle

I was out yesterday looking for signs of Fall on a crisp cool day and found myself at Crocker Park at one point.  As I walked up the road leading to the park, I passed Herreshoff Castle on my right.  I have tried to figure out a unique composition for this castle in Marblehead but failed until I spotted the leaves changing color along the entryway.  I positioned the camera fairly close to the ground so that you could just make out the front door with its large knocker as you looked beyond the red leaves.  The sky cooperated well [...]

Gatchell Playground and the Maple Tree

The Maple tree at the Gatchell playground is a lot like that Charlie Brown tree.  It's sad, probably dying but it's also one of the first trees in town to change colors and always seems like it might surprise you and really 'pop' one of these years. Last year was a pretty sad display and I photographed the tree by using a puddle to help keep focus on the lower half.  This year, I actually visited twice as the color was surprisingly good with most of the tree turning at the same time and very little leaf drop right off [...]

Peak Fall Colors at Green Street Cemetery

There is a great maple tree at the corner of Elm and Creesy Streets which I photographed last year and shared at Halloween.  As I drove around town this weekend looking for early signs of Fall, I spotted this tree at peak Fall colors and decided to look for a new composition.  Rather than including the gravestone I had previously focused on, I chose this one that reads Benj. Lindsey.  There are other names as well - Hannah and Nathaniel.  I was unable to find much information about the individuals buried here and will see if anyone can add to [...]

Reflections of Fall Colors in Marblehead

Fall seems to be coming early this year with trees turning easily two weeks sooner than they did last year.  I had started to notice the maples around town showing off their bright red colors and decided to drive around town on Saturday to see if I could find any to photograph. As I drove up Washington Street and passed Abbot Hall on my right, I saw a flash of red in my peripheral vision.  I quickly made the right to circle around and found this tree on the grounds of Abbot Hall at peak color.  The problem was finding [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 2 – First Colors at Crocker Park

Continuing on from yesterday's post, here is another image taken on the (soon to be) foggy morning of a hot September 11.  I had photographed Marblehead harbor filled with boats and the lighthouse for a while and kept looking in the other direction to see how the light was faring over there.  When the light picked up, it seemed to set off the small clump of foliage in the rocky cliff of Crocker Park that had started to change color.  I set up on the float for this composition including the nearby rowboat on a private float and the Crocker [...]

Fall Colors at the Bud Orne Playground

Here's a more recent image taken as the colors peaked around town.  I had noticed this great tree and its bright orange leaves one day as my son played flag football.  I wasn't able to photograph it at the time as the playground was wildly busy and decided to come by the next morning.  I found the place empty as if waiting in anticipation when I arrived.  While the trees had started to lose color at the top, they still had some nice leaves to serve as a backdrop to this great playground.

Peak Foliage at Waterside Cemetery

Hope you aren't tired of the bright colors of Fall yet.  This year's foliage seemed to take forever to get going and then was hampered by rain and wind before finally ending with Superstorm Sandy.  In the midst of that, I tried to capture the color that appeared for the shortest of times in town.  On this particular day in mid-October, I was due to drive up to Portsmouth for a conference.  When I saw the fog roll in that morning, I just knew that I would have to add a few stops to the drive.  One of the first [...]

School Colors on display at Marblehead High School

For the past few weeks, I've been on the hunt for examples of great foliage in town.  Everytime I drove down Pleasant Street, I would look up at Marblehead High School and note the status of the trees there.  On October 27th, the day before Hurricane Sandy was due to arrive, I decided to make a quick stop in the afternoon.  I figured this would be my last chance to shoot the trees there for the season and thought the timing might just work out. As I drove around the rotary and parked, I was thrilled to see the oranges [...]
