Marblehead Harbor

Lighting up the Harbor

Before a single firework is shot into the sky, Marblehead showcases its unique tradition of lighting up the harbor with flares.  I've photographed the view of red flares encircling Marblehead Harbor from the mainland each of the past few years but haven't had the chance to capture them from Marblehead Neck. On this Fourth of July, we had been invited out to the Neck for an Independence Day party and, as sunset passed, I excused myself and headed down to Corinthian Lane.  I found a familiar patch of hydrangea bushes and composed this scene.  Just before 8:45pm, the red flares [...]

Golden Sunset on Marblehead Harbor

This image was taken just six minutes after yesterday's post.  The sun began to dip below the clouds and into the fog which served to diffuse the light and set off a golden sunset on Marblehead Harbor. I don't believe I have ever shot just this section of Marblehead as I tend to try to include Abbot Hall whenever I shoot towards this side of town.  This time, I wanted the sun to take center stage as it peeked behind the clouds.  I included just enough of the town to make the location recognizable.

Windows to the Harbor

Sunday, June 21st was Fathers Day and, after spending the day with my wife and two kids, I decided to treat myself to a photo shoot.  I had a particular spot in mind for that day - though you'll have to wait until Wednesday to see it. As I explored this part of Marblehead Neck, I wandered down to the edge of Nahant Street.  I've photographed this area on a few occasions previously but on this day, the tide was perfect for using the rocky outcropping as a frame.  I composed the image to also include the Corinthian Yacht Club [...]

Golden Light on an Empty Harbor

In late April, I had gone out to shoot an oncoming storm and was surprised by the incredible golden light that bathed Marblehead Neck for a few minutes before being swallowed by clouds.  That golden light was made even more beautiful against the deep blues of the storm clouds.  Without any boats in this part of the harbor, the water served to reflect the color of the sky and was only interrupted by the scattered buoys in the empty harbor. I'm reminded every so often that what has helped keep my Wednesdays in Marblehead project going is as much as the [...]

Walking the Plank to Marblehead Harbor

Yet another shot from a great Tuesday in early-June.  I had captured rainbows at Chandler Hovey Park and then drove off as rain approached only to double back and shoot at Parker Lane for a while.  When the clouds moved, I did as well ending up on Foster Street in front of the Eastern Yacht Club. I started off capturing a shot of the long pier at the Eastern Yacht Club as the sunset light began to fade.  After that, I walked down the pier and to the plank that led down to floats where dinghies are attached.  I didn't have [...]

The Northern Lights and Marblehead Light

Update: An incredible G5 solar storm hit on May 10, 2024. See updated photos of the Aurora here - https://photos.wednesdaysinmhd.com/-/galleries/aurora-borealis-over-marblehead I first saw the Northern lights (or aurora borealis) from Marblehead in March 2015 during what was at the time the strongest solar storm to hit Earth in years.  I felt incredibly fortunate to have witnessed and captured the scene and never imagined I would have an opportunity to repeat it let alone improve upon it. As it happened, an even stronger solar storm event took place on June 22nd.  As night fell, the projected strength (or Kp) of the [...]

The Pier at the Eastern Yacht Club

I left Parker Lane shortly after Wednesday's image was taken and drove down to Foster Street.  The light was starting to fade but the lights at the Eastern Yacht Club's pier were on and I couldn't resist this view taking in the full length of the beautiful pier lit by lamps and bathed in the last hints of purple glow from the sunset. The Eastern Yacht Club really does have one of the most impressive piers in Marblehead.

Filling in the Harbor

On Friday, May 22nd, I chased the clouds over to Crocker Park at sunset hoping to capture one of those early Summer sunsets that had begun to develop over Marblehead.  The best conditions were opposite the setting sun and I needed a break in the clouds behind me to allow sunlight to wash Marblehead Neck in a golden glow.  I got just that at 7:41pm and captured this image showing Marblehead harbor filling up with boats and some nicely textured clouds showing the first of many Summer sunsets.

Lobstering under the Rising Sun

In early May I headed out at dawn in large part to capture the tree in bloom along Washington Street.  As I left the house, I spotted the sun beginning to rise and a brilliant red glow reflecting off the clouds.  I quickly decided on a stop at Hammond Park.  I grabbed the camera (no time for a tripod) and adjust settings as the sun began to disappear into the clouds.  As luck would have it, I caught the September Song heading out of Marblehead harbor on a lobstering expedition under the rising sun.

Lone Boat and Abbot Hall

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had been going out more at sunset with the gradual shift in light.  This image comes from Saturday night and a trip to Parker Lane. I've photographed from this Public Way countless times and am constantly surprised by just how different the scene can appear depending on light, tide and choice of composition.  This image was taken at the peak of light which you can see reflecting nicely in the water of Marblehead Harbor.  I wanted to focus on the lone boat and Abbot Hall but included the steeples of St. Michaels Church [...]
