A Spring Thaw on Marblehead Harbor

On Sunday, March 8, I awoke at 6:30am completely confused about whether I had gotten too little or too much sleep as we entered Daylight Savings Time.  Whichever the case might have been (it was too little by the way), I decided to take advantage and rush out of the house to capture the dawn and sunrise. The last time I had captured images of Marblehead Harbor was the morning on February 18th when I found the harbor had frozen for the first time in years.  With that in mind, I headed to one of my favorite spots for a [...]

Sea Smoke and Abbot Hall

One week after yesterday's image of a frozen Redd's Pond, the temperatures dipped to previously unseen lows and I headed out at dawn in hopes of capturing sea smoke.  Since first witnessing the phenomenon of smoke rising from the ocean, I have ventured out at every opportunity to capture the incredible sight.  However, until this day, I had never witnessed sea smoke within Marblehead Harbor. I previously shared a wider view of the sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor with the pink-purple sky of dawn over Marblehead's skyline.  This image was taken a few moments later when the sun had risen [...]

On Frozen Harbor

On Wednesday, February 18, I headed down to Marblehead Harbor to capture images of it frozen over after a near-record 15 days of below freezing temperatures.  What struck me most were the intricate textures and designs that had formed in the ice. I've shared some images from this outing but, in this one, I decided to use a vertical composition and processed it in black and white to help highlight the textures and patterns in the frozen harbor.

Stuck in a Frozen Marblehead Harbor

On Wednesday, I headed out at sunrise to capture images of Marblehead Harbor frozen from the arctic cold that has held strong for much of the past month.  I began by shooting from the mainland but then decided to drive across the causeway for images of the working boats now stuck in a frozen Marblehead harbor. I've never seen this much ice in Marblehead harbor before and, while nowhere near the thickness of ice in images from the 1970's, it made for an awesome sight.  I decided to compose this image with Abbot Hall, St. Michaels and Grace Community Church visible [...]

Frozen Marblehead Harbor at Sunrise

Today is my 40th birthday.  In the past, I have made it a point to capture the sunrise on my birthday each year and I have ended up with some favorite images to start each new year of life.  This year with forecasts for cloudy skies on Wednesday morning and overcast conditions for today, I opted to shoot the sunrise a day early. I started off intending to shoot from Hammond Park but it was closed off by a literal mountain of snow.  I was able to get close to the waters edge and found an incredible scene of a [...]

Working Boats under a Winter Sunset

Well, it happened again ;-) - a day of ocean effect snow and dreary grey skies began to clear right at 4:00pm.  I had to drop off my son somewhere so I grabbed my tripod and camera bag and decided to see if my luck might hold for a second evening. I had a very hard time deciding where to shoot.  I drove across the causeway and back again, down State Street and over to Front Street before doubling back.  I finally ended up at the Landing and made my way over near the Harbormaster's office. From there I could shoot toward [...]

Sea Smoke in the Harbor – Corinthian and Marblehead Light

Back to the incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor that took place on January 8, 2015.  This image was captured on my first round at Foster Street (I would come back after capturing the sun rise at Castle Rock before racing to work).  I had just photographed the sea smoke in the harbor with a purple sky over Abbot Hall and turned to find the sea smoke was even thicker looking out toward the Corinthian Yacht Club with Marblehead Light towering behind it. The wind was moving the sea smoke off the water and it took a few [...]

Smoke on the Water – Marblehead Harbor filled with Sea Smoke

In 2012, I was fortunate to witness and capture sea smoke on what was easily the coldest day of that year.  Since first seeing the incredible beauty of smoke rising off the ocean at dawn, I have sought to capture it again.  I went out a number of times in 2013 but the conditions were never right for sea smoke to develop.  In January 2014, I photographed backlit sea smoke as the sun rose behind Tinker's Island.  With all prior attempts, I had hoped to see sea smoke rising within Marblehead Harbor.  I'm not exactly sure what conditions favor the [...]

Lobster Boat encircled by Sea Smoke

There's only one good thing about the arctic conditions that periodically descend upon Marblehead - Sea Smoke.  I had first witnessed the phenomenon in January 2012 when the temperature dropped to the single digits with a wind chill bringing it to well below zero.  On that day, I was rewarded for braving the cold with a truly awesome view of Marblehead Light. As the sun rose and the sea smoke continued to rise from the Atlantic ocean, I sought other compositions from my spot along Front Street.  I have a few left to share in my 'to be posted' archive [...]
