Two Lights on Christmas Day

Back to Christmas day and that tree in a dinghy...  I've shared two images of the rare Christmas full moon silhouetting this boat and its perfectly placed and lit Christmas tree.  However, while I waited for the moon to rise on Christmas day, I couldn't help but wander around the wet rocks looking for other compositions. As it happened, the lights on Marblehead Light came on at sunset as did its green beacon and I found this one spot which allowed me to line up the two lights on Christmas day.  Thanks to First Harbor Company for the picture perfect [...]

The Christmas Full Moon

Last night, I shared an image of the Christmas full moon rising over Marblehead and illuminating the dinghy in Little Harbor with its perfect Christmas tree.  At the time, I had said that this wasn't the shot I had intended and, maybe subconsciously, knew that I would be trying again so I titled that image A Christmas Full Moon.  This image is the one I had envisioned and am so glad I headed out again tonight to capture it. After yesterday's adventure, I rechecked the time and location of tonight's moonrise and was pleased to see it would be late [...]

A Christmas Full Moon

The first Christmas full moon in nearly 40 years rose tonight over Marblehead and I had envisioned an image of the small dinghy in Little Harbor with its Christmas Tree as a perfect foreground for the shot.  As the fog and cloudy skies of this morning finally broke at 2pm, I started to wonder if I might actually be able to capture a shot of the Christmas full moon. I headed to Beacon Street and the Marblehead Lobster Company where I set up my camera and waited.  As I watched the darkening sky for any hint of the Christmas full [...]

Still Water in Little Harbor

Today's image comes from July 18 and a trip to Gerry Island.  Low tide occurred as the sun set and I headed over to the land bridge connecting Gerry Island to the mainland in hopes of a decent sunset.  Ironically, this image captures the spot from which I took Tuesday's image of sunset over Little Harbor. While great clouds and light never materialized, the still water in Little Harbor served as a perfect mirror to reflect the houses of Fort Sewall Lane.

The Boat Yard

On July 24th, I chased a rainbow and then a rain cloud before finding myself on the edge of Fort Beach Way trying to capture the last colors of sunset.  The location offered a unique vantage point of the boat yard that makes up the Little Harbor boathouse. Despite this shot being taken in the midst of a picture perfect Summer, there were still a few boats to be seen dry docked in the boat yard.

Gerry and Brown’s Islands under a Cloud Filled Sky

As the unofficial last week of Summer comes to a close (school starts next week!!!), I wanted to share an image that might transport you to a warm and happy place.  This image of Gerry and Brown's Islands was taken on Wednesday, August 5th at 2pm.  While I tend to shoot in the early morning hours or much later in the day, I decided to head out when I spotted cumulous clouds in the sky for just this type of image. Shooting in mid-day can be harder with harsh light and no shadows but, with the right amount of clouds [...]

Old North Church and the Harbor

A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through my Facebook news feed and happened upon a puzzle being sold on a local group page with a cartoonish drawing of Old North Church situated above the houses on Doaks Lane with a section of Little Harbor below.  The composition was one I did not believe existed in real life but, at the first opportunity of a low tide, I decided to see just how close I could get. I headed out to Gerry Island on August 17 at sunset and walked along the sandbar that appears with each low tide.  Once [...]

A Blanket of Snow over Marblehead

Yesterday I got my first sunburn of the season (a mild one thankfully) and also realized that the vivid memories of this past Winter's snow had started to fade.  It's amazing what a few warm days will do to the human mind and psyche and likely explains why we all continue to live here year after year.  As a former resident of Los Angeles (13 years), I can tell you I wouldn't have it any other way. With that being said, the warm days seemed to clear the way to share some images of snow that I had not had [...]

Walking on Water in Little Harbor

In early December 2011, I was at Fort Sewall shooting Marblehead Light and the harbor when I walked around to the North side with views of Gerry Island.  I spotted two people making their way across Little Harbor via the land bridge that connects the island to land at low tide.  As the tide had come in at this point, the land bridge seemed to have disappeared and the people seemed to be walking on water. It's such a unique site seen from afar but, in the Summer, this is a fairly regular occurrence as most people who make their [...]

Sunlight through the Windshield at Little Harbor

This image comes from a dawn photo shoot in early October.  I had decided to shoot in the area around Little Harbor on this particular morning as I had noticed a few trees starting to show their Fall colors.  Though the trees were far from peak, the combination of morning light and clouds added up to a strong outing. At this point, the sun had risen high enough to cast its light over Brown's Island.  The small boat had rotated so that the sunlight could be seen shining through the windshield and I captured this image to include the boat [...]
