Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree

I shared an image of the full canopy of this blooming Chestnut tree at Crocker Park the other day. Immediately after taking that image, I moved around to a familiar spot and set about composing this shot of Abbot Hall against a perfect May sunset from under the spreading Chestnut tree. I couldn’t have asked for better light as I clicked the shutter and was thrilled with the final image showcasing the unique pyramidal flowers of the Chestnut tree against the familiar landmark of Abbot Hall. Something about the term Chestnut tree triggered memories and I googled the phrase when I arrived home. [...]

Summer’s First Breath

My favorite aspects of Summer sunsets are their long duration and the incredible color gamut that can be seen from start to finish. Today's image of Summer's first breath was taken 10 minutes before yesterday's wide view of deep purple colors over the harbor as seen from Parker Lane. When I arrived at this spot, I was treated to a yellow-orange sun with light radiating off the low lying clouds and bathing the harbor in orange-blue light. The First Breath of Summer

I woke this morning at 4:30am hoping to catch a nice sunrise over Marblehead Harbor with projected warm air coming to town. Last Light at Castle Rock

In early June 2013, I had gone out near sunset and quite literally chased this small cloud from the house across the causeway and onto Marblehead Neck. I had recently delivered a print to a house overlooking Castle Rock and made a quick call on my way to see if I could shoot from a spot I had eyed the day before. Foggy Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

Continuing this week's exploration of the archives brings us this image from late June 2013. I had gone out to the Dolphin Yacht Club this evening to capture the sunset cannon being fired and ended up being witness to a beautiful pink foggy sunset. The light was incredible and the water content of the fog served to help diffuse and reflect the sunset colors. If you look carefully, you can spot a faint rainbow that appeared overhead for a few minutes shortly after the cannon was fired.

Waving Flags at the Launch

This weekend's weather likely put many in mind for Summer nights spent on the water and I wouldn't be surprised to see Marblehead Harbor filled a bit more after some additional warm days this week. Pools of Light in Marblehead Harbor

As the boats begin to fill the harbor, I can't help but think ahead to the Summer months with boats filling the harbor and plenty of opportunities to shoot sunsets over the water. Today's image was taken on June 24, 2015 during a very nice sunset that led to a number of 'keepers'. The Working Boats in Marblehead Harbor

In mid-April, I headed out to Crocker Park at sunset as the clouds held the promise of a solid Spring sunset. A Ferris Wheel Sunset

While rain frequently follows the Marblehead carnival as it sets up in town, the benefit of such weather also means the opportunity for beautiful sunsets. The day after yesterday's image of the ferris wheel reflected in two puddles, I returned with my family and took the ferris wheel ride with my daughter at sunset. As we reached the top of the ferris wheel, I noticed the light over Devereux Beach and captured this image of the carnival, beach and ocean beyond. Enjoy the Marblehead Carnival this weekend.

Pink Fire in the Sky over Marblehead Harbor

Saturday was a busy day and one filled with incredible light. I had gone out earlier that afternoon to shoot sailboats racing in the Jackson Cup and then returned when I saw a clearing near the horizon and high clouds with an undulating structure forming above.
