Purple Sky and Smooth Sand at Devereux Beach

On September 9, 2014, I witnessed one of the most incredible sunsets of my life.  The view was made even more amazing by my choice of Devereux Beach to serve as backdrop.  Some combination of storm and incredibly low tides had transformed what is normally a fairly rocky beach into this beautiful smooth sand version. I'll bet many longtime 'Headers would have been hard pressed to name this as Devereux Beach based on the conditions. More images of Marblehead without snow coming throughout the week.  Stay tuned...

A Study in Pink at Crocker Park

I've shared a few images from the incredible sunset that took place on February 10th though all of those were of Abbot Hall and the houses surrounding it.  From my vantage point atop a large piece of granite at Crocker Park, I was able to turn around and shoot toward Marblehead Harbor as the sun set. At this point, the light had reached its peak opposite the setting sun (the show was only getting started in the other direction).  I decided on a wide view and used the nearby tree to frame the composition together with the deep blanket of [...]

A Blanket of Snow over Marblehead

On February 10th, I had gone out to Crocker Park in order to capture images of this historic Winter with record amounts of snow.  I was rewarded with an incredible sunset that lit up the sky and colored the snow in a pink hue. Before capturing that image, I had worked on several other compositions as the light began to develop.  This image is a tighter shot than the prior sunset view and features an undisturbed patch of snow in the foreground with a blanket of snow seemingly thrown over the town of Marblehead. As I worked on this image, I [...]

A Path Through the Snow

This is the last image I captured on February 10th when I visited Crocker Park and witnessed an incredible sunset.  After the light had reached its peak, I packed up my gear and made my way back to the car through chest-high snow drifts. I finally made it this path through the snow and, near the end, turned back to see the last hints of pink in the evening sky.  I quickly set up the tripod and camera to capture this view showcasing just how much snow has fallen on this record-setting Winter. Who said there is no beauty to [...]

Blowing Snow at Devereux Beach

The snow this Winter has been ridiculous - more so because the Winter has been compressed into all of 30 days of snowfall.  After the latest storm left, a bitter cold wind remained and I made the brilliant decision to go out to shoot the sunset. Without a doubt, these were the most difficult conditions I have ever shot in.  First, it took me a while to find a place to park the car with roads barely passable by one or two cars at a time.  When I did, I found myself facing incredible wind gusts that pushed the single [...]

Working Boats under a Winter Sunset

Well, it happened again ;-) - a day of ocean effect snow and dreary grey skies began to clear right at 4:00pm.  I had to drop off my son somewhere so I grabbed my tripod and camera bag and decided to see if my luck might hold for a second evening. I had a very hard time deciding where to shoot.  I drove across the causeway and back again, down State Street and over to Front Street before doubling back.  I finally ended up at the Landing and made my way over near the Harbormaster's office. From there I could shoot toward [...]

Trodding Toward the Sunset at Crocker Park

After an impossible amount of snow fall, it seemed that the sky would never clear from its dreary grey.  But, as I finished shoveling our driveway, I noted a bit of sky poking out near the horizon.  I quickly walked into the house and up the stairs for a better view and, sure enough, blue sky could be seen in all directions under the clouds.  I figured there was a chance that the clearing would hold and the sunset would reflect off the clouds above and the freshly fallen snow that has piled up throughout the town - and so [...]

A View of Sunset at Castle Rock

The final image from a 25 minute outing at Castle Rock is this one of the two benches that allow for prime seating and incredible views of the ocean from Marblehead Neck.  Most consider Castle Rock a perfect spot for watching the sunrise and these benches can't be beat for sitting down to enjoy a cup of coffee on a Summer morning. However, with clouds in the sky to reflect the colors of the setting sun, one can find an equally beautiful view of sunset at Castle Rock.  This image captures the full view of Castle Rock facing 180 degrees [...]

Lone Dog on Devereux Beach

This seemed like a good image to end the week on with a lone dog on Devereux Beach.  I captured this on November 23rd when I had headed to the top of the causeway to photograph the sunset as it took shape over Devereux Beach. I wasn't the only one taking advantage of the warmish weather and I managed to capture this dog in my frame before his owners were able to catch up to him giving the impression of a lone dog on the beach at sunset.
