First One into the Harbor

After the past two days of perfect weather, I can't be the only waiting eagerly awaiting those warm Summer days.  I decided to look through my archive of 'to be posted' images to find ones taken in April and instantly settled on this shot for today's post. On April 25, 2015, I had gone out near sunset on an equally warm night and found a single sailboat already moored in the waters.  Its positioning was perfect from this angle on Parker Lane and it appeared to be the 'first one in the harbor' - or at least this part of [...]

Between the Moon and Marblehead Light

A full moon is rising tonight on the first night of Passover and, knowing that I won't have a chance to shoot it, I thought I would share this image of the moonrise from mid-November.  I've shared two other images of this full moon before but today's image was the first one I captured that night and, while the moon hadn't quite hit its peak glow, I really liked the softer look of it as it broke through the haze on this night. One of my favorite aspects of shooting the moon from this spot near Crocker Park was being able [...]

Historic Downtown Marblehead on a late March evening

This view of historic downtown Marblehead was taken just before the full panorama I shared on Monday.  The clouds in the late March sky were reflecting the colors of sunset while I positioned the Phantom 4 Pro almost 200 feet above Union Street and composed this image to include three of Marblehead's familiar steeples - St. Michaels, Grace Community Church and Old North Church. It takes a while to get your bearings in these aerial views of historic downtown Marblehead but, once you do, you can spot some familiar stores along Washington street in the left lower section, Crosby's in [...]

Abbot Hall towering over Front Street

After exploring the harbor, I turned around and flew across Crocker Park to Front Street and took in this view of Abbot Hall from 120 feet above the ground.  The sun was momentarily shaded by thin clouds and I took advantage of the softened sunset light to capture this image of Abbot Hall towering over Front Street with its historic homes having stood the test of time for hundreds of years. If you look to the left of Abbot Hall, you can clearly see the familiar silhouette of the Boston skyline.  One aspect of exploring these aerial views of Marblehead that [...]

Working Boats and Golden Light

Last Wednesday, I headed to Crocker Park with the Phantom 4 Pro in hand to capture sunset views from one of my favorite spots in town. I started off by flying over the working boats moored in an otherwise empty Marblehead Harbor and had reached this spot 40 feet above the ground when the sun broke through the clouds and lit Marblehead Neck in beautiful golden light. If you look closely, you can spot the anticrepuscular rays converging behind the Corinthian Yacht Club and there are subtle hints of the golden light reflecting in the still waters of the harbor [...]

Old Town Sunset – Aerial Panorama of historic downtown Marblehead

On Wednesdays, March 29th, the dense clouds covering Marblehead for most of the day finally began to break as the day neared its end.  I hadn't flown my Phantom 4 Pro in a few weeks due to rain, clouds and otherwise terrible lighting.  When I finally made it up in the air, I knew the lighting on this night was going to be pretty special and ended up with a spectacular view of an Old Town sunset. I explored a few vantage points as I flew over Marblehead and fought the building wind as I chased the light.  I found [...]

Capturing the Moment

The night of July 5th, 2016 produced the most beautiful light I have ever encountered in my 9 years in Marblehead and resulted in (now) 13 images shared from this one evening.  It really was a joy to watch the fog develop as the day approached its end and then be awed by the foggy sunset that followed. As much as I strive to capture perfect moments of the town of Marblehead and share its beauty with current and former residents, I have very few images of myself actually capturing these moments.  And so when I spotted a woman pull [...]

The Causeway from Above

The week wouldn't be complete without a view of the causeway from above thanks to the newest camera in my arsenal, the Phantom 4 Pro.  I flew over the causeway in early December and composed this image to highlight the ultimate purpose of this thin band of land - to separate the Atlantic ocean in all of its power from the still and protected waters of Marblehead harbor. You can see the waves lapping against the Atlantic side of the causeway and appreciate the power that comes to bear on this section of land with each storm.

September Sunset over the Causeway

I'm sure I'm not the only one who cannot wait for the warm weather of Spring to take hold and usher in long days spent outside.  Today's image continues this week's causeway theme with a view of a beautiful September sunset over the causeway. I lucked out with the timing of this particular sunset and the cumulous clouds that moved over Marblehead Neck just in time to reflect the golden glow of light towards me and off the still waters of the ocean below.  The causeway isn't the focal point of this particular image but serves to guide the viewer's eye [...]

Mixed up Causeway

Continuing with the week's theme of Marblehead's causeway, I happened upon this image captured in May 2012 and stared at it for several minutes trying to remember where I took it and how I ended up with such a mixed up view. On this foggy day, all familiar landmarks were removed from an otherwise familiar scene and that, combined with the low tide and floats barely visible in the harbor, left me a bit turned around when I looked at this image.  It came to me eventually that this was taken while standing on the harbor side just over Riverhead [...]
