Milky Water and the Lights of the Causeway

It's 'Marblehead Causeway' week on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  Since we are firmly in 'stick season' in between the beauty of Winter and the warmth of Spring, I thought I would visit my 'to be posted' archive and decided to share five very different images of our causeway. Today's image comes from May 2012 and a time when I was exploring long exposure images and doing much more black and white work.  This one combined both having been shot on the Neck side of the causeway looking back toward Riverhead beach.  The 20 second exposure smoothed the water of the harbor [...]

Racing by Old North Church

Today's image comes from mid-February and an unusually warm day for watching and capturing frostbite sailing in Marblehead Harbor.  I had been shooting the sailboats primarily from the air but switched to my camera as they grouped together and captured this shot of the boats racing by Old North Church. With this arctic blast of cold in the third week of March, I don't think I'm alone in looking for reminders that Spring should be here soon and with it more boats in the water.

Summer Sunsets on the Harbor

Though it has been great to explore views over Marblehead with my new Phantom 4 Pro, I cannot wait for the mooring to fill with boats and capture warm Summer sunsets on the harbor.  This image was taken on a picture perfect evening in September but we are only five weeks away from seeing boats starting to fill Marblehead harbor for the season.

Last Light on Marblehead Neck

On March 8th, I captured one of my favorite aerial images of Marblehead Neck while the sun was still quite high in the sky.  Afterward, I flew around the Neck and finally off the coast of Chandler Hovey Park as the sun set and cast its last light on Marblehead Neck. The most exciting aspect of capturing aerial images of Marblehead is the change in perspective which, in this image, shows the proximity of the Neck to the mainland and Boston's beautiful skyline in the distance.

Fall Colors at Tedesco Country Club

Last Fall proved to be a down year for foliage in Marblehead after the drought took hold of our town for much of the Summer and Fall.  And so, when I spotted this crop of trees displaying their Fall colors at the Tedesco Country Club on an early November evening, I had to pull over and capture the scene. The light of sunset was soft and not at all dramatic but that seemed to suit the subtle colors in this small group of trees.

Abbot and the BYC

Today's image comes from November 14th and an attempt at capturing a supermoon setting behind Abbot Hall.  Before the moon had dipped low enough in the pre-dawn sky, I found this composition of Abbot Hall lit by its spotlights standing over houses and the BYC with its red and green lights aimed at Marblehead Harbor. The moon entered this scene 10 minutes later but I decided to switch to a horizontal view at that point thus removing the BYC from the frame.  The light on Abbot had also dimmed in that short interval making this shot all the more interesting for [...]

Sunset Before the Storm

I captured this image of clouds behind Marblehead Light on Chandler Hovey Park last week at sunset but didn't have a chance to work on the image until yesterday's snow day.  I had been photographing with my Phantom 4 Pro at Crocker Park before deciding to change vantage points and ended up at Chandler Hovey Park just as the sun was setting and with perfect clouds formed behind the lighthouse. I shot this is a vertical panorama while standing beside the flag pole so that I could include the foreground rocks and stone bench lit in golden light.  Hope you [...]

Full Worm Moon over Flying Point

I can't describe how cold it was tonight while waiting for the full moon to rise over Flying Point.  With the clear night sky, I decided to drive over to Greystone beach having scouted out the projected rise of the full worm moon.  I had initially considered shooting the moonrise over Children's Island but decided in the end to try to capture it over the tip of Marblehead Neck instead. I set up about 10 minutes early with a borrowed 600mm lens and waited...and waited.  The cold air seemed to blow right through all layers of clothing and my hands [...]

Four Hundred Feet over Marblehead Neck

I just couldn't wait to share tonight's sunset over Marblehead Neck.  I had a small window to shoot tonight but the building clouds which began to appear around 4pm made me certain that the sunset would be worth chasing.  I stopped home after dropping my kids at their afternoon activities and headed out with an idea for an aerial panorama of Marblehead Neck. I was a bit worried as the winds would gust on the ground and I received a few warnings from the drone as I took it up to four hundred feet over Marblehead Neck from the launch [...]
