Winter Wonderland on Washington Street

As this Nor'Easter departs, I wanted to continue with scenes of snow on this snowless Marblehead winter.  After our first real snowfall of the season took place overnight on January 7, I decided to head downtown to capture aerial scenes of the winter wonderland on Washington Street.  I flew the Phantom 4 Pro at varying heights and directions until I found this composition with Washington Street leading the viewer's eye to Abbot Hall and further out to the distant Boston Skyline.  Historic downtown Marblehead shines in its blanket of white on this early January morning.

Ocean Meets the Barnacle

As a Nor'Easter pounds the coast, I am reminded of this image captured in March 2013 during another storm that hit Marblehead.  I ventured out to Lovis Cove at high tide hoping to capture the results from when the ocean meets the Barnacle.  Sure enough, waves crashed against the building sending the surf high up in the air.  I'll be heading out at high tide this morning to see if I can capture new images of the angry ocean.

Greystone Beach on a Snowy Morning

As this Winter without snow continues, I thought I would look back in my 'to be posted' archive for images from past Winters.  Today's shot comes from the morning of February 15, 2014 and a short drive over to Greystone Beach to capture the view of snow covered ground reflecting the soft light of sunrise.

Fifteen Degree Sunset

This is the dorkiest title I have ever given to an image but I just couldn't come up with anything good... After capturing images with the Phantom 4 Pro from above Devereux beach on Monday night, I switched over to the real camera and set about capturing a Winter beach sunset.  While most of the good light was down the beach, I kept my eye on this diagonal band of clouds and switched to this composition as they picked up the light of the setting sun.  I timed the shot to capture the gentle surf coming ashore. As for the title, [...]

Waves Lapping at the Causeway

On Monday night, I headed out to Devereux beach in the hopes of exploring the causeway and beach with my new Phantom 4 Pro.  As I flew across the causeway, I positioned the camera directly down and was mesmerized by the view of green-blue water gently lapping against the sand and rocks abutting the causeway. I stopped in my tracks, rotated the drone and composed this image.  As I did so, I was recording and caught a bicyclist riding across the top of the frame.  That video is below. As soon as he passed, I captured this image of [...]

Winter Beach Sunset – From above the Ocean and the Edge of the Waves

Last night, I drove out to Devereux Beach with both drone and camera in hand hoping to capture a nice Winter beach sunset.  I had started to become comfortable flying the Phantom 4 Pro and was now looking to start pushing its boundaries to see what I could do that was more creative.  At the same time, I didn't want to miss out on shooting a nice sunset with the real camera. I made it to Devereux beach with plenty of time to spare and set up the drone first.  I crossed the causeway and found the combination of water and [...]

Working Boats of Marblehead Harbor

This sunset image of the working boats of Marblehead harbor seemed like a fitting way to head into the long weekend.  As the days grow longer and after this January thaw, Spring suddenly doesn't seem so far away. This image was taken on April 12, 2016 at 7:20pm as the sunset gave up its last rays of light to illuminate the sky and the working boats of Marblehead harbor floated on the still waters.  From now until late April, these boats will remain the sole denizens of our harbor and then each mooring will begin to fill with pleasure boats [...]

Full Buck Moon over Ram Island

The full moon is rising tonight but I won't have a chance to capture it.  Instead, I looked through my to-be-published archive and found this image of the full buck moon from July 2016 rising over Ram Island.  The sun had just dipped below the horizon (after 8:00pm!) and lent the sky a pink hue. I've shared one other image from this evening shortly after moonrise but really liked this one for the addition of the moonlight reflecting in the calm ocean waters.

Snowy Morning in Marblehead

After 9 inches of snow fell on Marblehead this past weekend, I couldn't wait for dawn and a chance to capture the views of historic downtown Marblehead from the air.  I woke early and drove down to Washington Street from where I launched the Phantom 4 Pro and took in the views of our town on a snowy morning. It's one thing to compose an image in 2 dimensions but quite another to add height to the equation.  I'm still learning a lot when it comes to creating dramatic compositions with aerial photography but this image with Old Town House in [...]

First Harbor at Dawn

On a late October morning, I headed down to First Harbor in the hopes of capturing dawn break and some nice colors.  I drove up Orne Street to where it meets Beacon Street and parked in front of the Marblehead Lobster Company (now closed and awaiting a planned reopening).  As dawn broke, I was treated to soft light in the sky and calm waters in First Harbor to reflect the pinks and oranges.  As it happened, a single boat named Sea Nymph sat moored alone in the still waters. I composed this image to include Marblehead Light situated between Gerry [...]
