A Very Marblehead Christmas

Taking a quick break from my top 10 of 2016 countdown to wish everyone a very merry Marblehead Christmas (and happy Hanukkah which starts tonight as well).  On the morning of December 16, the air temperature was 2F and I had gone out to chase sea smoke.  I had a spot at Fort Sewall picked out as a backup option but first drove by a few spots to see if they offered better vantage points. As I drove along Beacon Street and glanced across Grace Oliver Beach and Dolliber Cove, I spotted a picture perfect Christmas Tree at the end [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #6 – Goodnight Moon

Another very recent image that immediately cemented a place in my top 10 images of 2016 was this one of the supermoon and Abbot Hall captured on November 14th.  I had three opportunities to capture the historically large supermoon (beaver moon) with a moonrise over Chandler Hovey Park and a moonset against Abbot Hall.  The most challenging one took place on Monday, November 14th with the moonrise.  I had scouted out this location ahead of time but wasn't sure if the trajectory of the moon would work with the very small angle I had to work with.  To add an extra [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #7 – Smoke on the Water – Fire in the Sky

I don't think I've ever had a situation like this one where one of the last images captured in December immediately cements a place in the Top 10 list.  I had another image of sea smoke in this #7 spot but the combination of sea smoke, a sun star (formed by the break in clouds partially obscuring the morning sun) and that red glow behind Marblehead Light made this one an instant favorite.  #7 on the Top 10 of 2016 is this image of smoke on the water and fire in the sky captured on December 16.

Top 10 of 2016 – #8 – The Christmas Tree Bonfire

We moved to Marblehead in May 2008 just as the causeway was being re-built and, as such, had never witnessed the annual Christmas Tree bonfire tradition.  On January 6, the tradition was resumed and I was awed by the site of the incredible bonfire and, even more, the gathered crowd reflected in the flame light.  Here is #8 in my Top 10 of 2016 countdown - make sure you visit Riverhead Beach on Friday, January 6 for the 2017 edition of the bonfire.

Top 10 of 2016 – #9 – Clear View Across the Harbor

Today's image was taken on March 18 and shot up to #9 on my Top 10 of 2016 list for its perfect sky and incredible clarity.  I went out on this evening chasing the textured sky and hoping for a strong sunset but was struck by the clarify of the houses lining Marblehead Harbor when viewed from across the water at the Pleon pier.

Top 10 of 2016 – #10 – Tendrils of Sea Smoke at Sunrise

As we near the end of the year, I wanted to share my top 10 images of 2016 leading up to the annual New Years Day slideshow recapping every image shared on Wednesdays in Marblehead (253 images this year).  This image of tendrils of sea smoke was taken on Valentine's Day and was the most impressive display of sea smoke I had even witnessed.  The angle of the morning sun added much needed backlight to the smoke and created an other-worldly display making this an easy favorite for #10 on the Top 10 of 2016 list.

Smoke on the Water – Fire in the Sky

This morning, air temperatures of 2F and water temperatures of 50F held the promise of sea smoke to make up for the otherwise miserable cold.  Any chance to see, let alone photograph, smoke on the water will get me out of the house and so, bundled in layers, I headed out.  I drove around trying to find the perfect spot and made my way just before dawn to Fort Sewall.  I was perched there braced against the wind gusts hoping for good light when I started to see breaks forming in the clouds. Sure enough, as the sun rose behind [...]

Moon and Star over Marblehead

On Wednesday morning, I left the house at dawn with two goals in mind - capturing the setting full moon over Marblehead and a few images using my new Phantom drone.  I started by crossing the causeway and saw the beautiful full moon in my rear view mirror.  I had charted out its descent the night before but, when faced with the moon that morning, I found myself struggling with the right shooting spot.  I ended up driving down Foster Street, up Harbor Avenue, down Corinthian Lane, back up Nahant Street, down Ocean Avenue and finally deciding on Harvard Street. [...]

Breathtaking View from Corinthian Lane

After six years of capturing images of Marblehead, I had started to wonder if Marblehead could still surprise me with her beauty and then the sunset of September 20th proved that it absolutely could.  I had gone out that night hoping for good light and ended up at Corinthian Lane on a whim.  That decision paid off as one of the most vibrant (and longest lasting) sunsets I had ever witnessed took shape over Marblehead Harbor. I've shared a few shots from this evening already and have many more favorites yet to share as the light continued to change and [...]

Light Up the Moon

Last night, I headed out of Marblehead in the hopes of capturing the full cold moon rising behind Nubble Light which had been decorated for the season in holiday lights.  It felt good to venture outside of Marblehead for a photoshoot - something I hadn't done in quite some time.  And even better to meet up with Phil Cohen who served as the inspiration for Wednesdays in Marblehead with his The Daily Portsmouth. As luck would have it, thick clouds moved in a bit earlier than expected and spoiled the photoshoot.  I was still able to catch up with Phil but [...]
