Fast Company and Bright Stars

On the morning of November 14, I had gone out before dawn to capture the third and final image of the supermoon setting behind Abbot Hall.  After it had set, I swapped lenses and waited for the break of dawn which brought with it a clear but beautiful pink-orange sky over Abbot Hall. Two boats were clearly visible in mid-harbor: Fast Company III and Bright Stars so, without much else in mind for a title of today's image, I decided to borrow the boat names.

First Freeze at Redd’s Pond

I went out last night with camera and drone in hand hoping for good light at sunset to capture aerial views of Marblehead.  I decided to try my luck at Redd's Pond and was disappointed with the light but happy to find the first freeze of the season had created a perfect layer of ice above the water.  While the ice wasn't thick enough to stand on, it did serve as a beautifully reflective surface and, as luck would have it, a Christmas tree was glowing in the window of one of the red houses across the pond. With the [...]

Jeremiah Lee Mansion at Dawn

The Jeremiah Lee Mansion has been featured on this site a number of times but I found this shot from last December that hadn't yet seen the light of day.  Each year as the parking ban goes into effect, I make it a point to visit historic downtown Marblehead and capture images of the empty streets much as they appeared for hundreds of years. On this particular morning, I found a new composition for this old building as I discovered that St. Michael's steeple could be seen just to the left of the building behind the branches of a nearby [...]

A String of LIghts on Marblehead Light

For today's image, I decided to look into my 'to be published' archive and focus on images captured in the month of December.  I found this one of a string of lights on Marblehead Light from December 18, 2011 and it instantly put me in the mood for celebrating the upcoming holiday. Each year, lights are strung from atop the lighthouse adding a festive touch to Chandler Hovey Park.  I was fortunate to join the crew stringing lights one year and was amazed by their heft.  As these original incandescent lights have started to lose their luster and give out [...]

The Start of Something New…Wednesdays over Marblehead

For those who have followed this site for a while, you may recall I had a theme called From the Rooftops in which I sought out public and private rooftops from which to shoot Marblehead in a different perspective.  As the rooftop series came to an end, I started to follow the development of drones from various companies which offered the potential for capturing views of Marblehead from above.  The first few generations of drones left much to be desired from a photography perspective but, recently, DJI announced the Phantom 4 Pro which ticked off every single box I had [...]

Oko of Marblehead

Having captured the annual Christmas Walk parade, my son and I stopped at Mino's for lunch before heading out to Gillette Stadium to catch the Marblehead football game.  As we walked to the car, we spotted the Okommakamesit or Oko of Marblehead parked in front of the house where it is normally stationed.  This old handtub has participated in musters for over a hundred years and, as part of the Christmas Walk, the Okos had opened up their place on the corner of Washington and State Streets to visitors. We headed inside and took in the small museum on the [...]

Marching in the Christmas Walk Parade

This weekend, the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk took place and, as an added bonus, my daughter was marching in the Christmas Walk parade for the first time.  I decided to set up along State Street hoping to capture images of Glover's Regiment and then her cheerleading group on this timeless street with the star hanging from a crane near the Landing.  I managed a few shots that I was happy with and then ran up State and across Washington Street to try one more shot of Glover's Regiment marching in front of Old Town House. As luck would have it, [...]

Wednesdays in Marblehead Pop Up Shop – Tomorrow on Washington Street

On Sunday, I will be participating in a pop up shop in historic downtown Marblehead.  I'll be in the blue building in the image above near the corner of Washington and State Streets.  There will be other vendors there as well including Polly Bruno with TQOF Jewelry, Patsy Wiswell with Patsy Kane Jewelry, Kathy Stauner with Jo Malone Fragrances and Candles, Jessica Pingree with Nanepashemet Creations, Beverly Noyes with Peshie Towels & Wraps, and Ian & Tori McLaughlin with Whale Island Press. I'll have books, calendars and matted prints available for purchase - they make the perfect present for the current or former 'Header in your [...]

Marblehead Christmas Walk

The Marblehead Christmas Walk is this weekend and I thought I would share this image of Glover's Regiment walking down State Street at the conclusion of the 2011 parade to spread the word.  If you are new in town or haven't participated in the Marblehead Christmas Walk festivities, make sure you head to historical downtown this weekend. This year marks the 46th version of the annual event sponsored by the business community.  Tonight, there will be a Tree Lighting at the National Grand Bank lot from 6-7pm as well as a lobster trap tree lighting in front of Mud Puddle [...]

Marblehead Football is in the Superbowl

Though I took this photo of a tree displaying Fall foliage in October 2012, it seemed only appropriate to share it with the upcoming Marblehead football game against Falmouth for the Division 2A championship.  When I visited Gatchell park to shoot the lone tree displaying its foliage, I hadn't expected to find the tackle dummies in a perfect position and with complementary colors to make for a stronger shot. With those jerseys on display, this quickly became an easily recognizable Marblehead football image and I figured I would share it today in case some in town did not know about [...]
