Winter Sunset on Devereux Beach

As the days get shorter and Summer reaches its end, I'm reminded of the beauty of Winter sunsets in Marblehead.  The colors of sunsets in the Winter are quite different than their Summer variants.  At the same time, the timing of those early sunsets and the rapidity with which the light changes makes them far more challenging to capture. This image was taken on December 4, 2011 during a high tide on Devereux Beach.  I setup my tripod in the wet sand and had thought ahead so was wearing waterproof boots.  I still had to time the shot just right [...]

Sailors Lodge on Childrens Island

I discovered the Sailors Lodge on Childrens Island during a tour of the YMCA-owned island in October 2011.  The grounds offered a number of photo opportunities including this one of a bright orange door, various sailing flags and a winged column. If you haven't explored Childrens Island, keep an eye out for the late Spring and early Fall tours put together by the YMCA.

The Cool Waters of Grace Oliver Beach

This week's images all come from the 'to be published' archive and, specifically, 2011.  Today's shot was captured on a mid-June day at Grace Oliver Beach during the high tide.  The still cool water offered a bit of a challenge in getting this image but I couldn't resist the great morning light or the calm waters of this favorite Marblehead beach. For those new to town, Grace Oliver Beach is located off Beacon Street.  It was named after the woman who lived in a house on nearby Doliber Point during the 19th century. The water remains shallow past the far rock and is [...]

Abbot through the Trees

On July 1st, I headed to Marblehead Neck on a commissioned shoot to photograph a grand home on Harbor Avenue.  I walked the grounds with the home's owners (and their dog) and found a number of great views of the house and surroundings as I explored the property.  When I turned the corner and saw this view of Abbot through the trees, I knew I couldn't leave without capturing this image. I ran back to the car for my longer lens and set up for this view of Abbot Hall with boats moored in the harbor all framed by trees [...]

Play Ball at Seaside Park

This year, the North Shore baseball league brought their Summer series to Seaside Park in Marblehead.  The Marblehead Seasiders played games on weekdays and weekends in front of the wooden grandstand that still stands after one hundred years. I drove by several times when games were in session and it was quite a sight to view a game being played at this perfect little field.  With the first season over, I'm sure many in town will look forward to watching a Summer game at Seaside park next year.

Purple Fog in Marblehead

For today's image we return to the night of July 5th and the incredible display of fog that descended on Marblehead harbor as sunset approached.  This was the last of several images captured in the span of an hour while running around Chandlery Hovey Park exploring compositions. At this point, the sun had slipped behind the tree line and the sky took on the color of purple fog.  I composed this image to include the boats moored near the mouth of the harbor and caught a small Townie class boat heading in using what little wind afforded them some semblance [...]

Sun Circle Sunset

I've visited the sun circle at Preston Beach countless times and have tried to find interesting compositions to showcase its design.  After shooting the brilliant sunset at Preston on July 23rd, I headed back to the car but stopped short as I walked up the path and came up to the sun circle.  I noted the still peaking sunset colors perfectly positioned for a different vantage point than prior attempts and set up for the shot. I decided on a vertical orientation in order to fit the full height of the sun circle columns while including as much of the [...]

Calm Sunset at Preston Beach

On July 23rd, I had headed to Preston Beach hoping for a nice sunset as a storm approached.  I started off shooting the incredibly calm waters of the Atlantic Ocean as the clouds began to reflect the light of the setting sun.  Little did I know that only 10 minutes later I would be shooting a brilliant pink-red sky with rainbows and lightning bolts. With the recent warm days, many of our beaches have been packed as people flock to the ocean to find some solace from the heat.  It was nice to have the beach to myself on this [...]

Six Year Anniversary for Wednesdays in Marblehead

Six Years!  Where did the time go?  On August 14, 2010, I created Wednesdays in Marblehead and posted my first image of the Marblehead fireworks taken just one month prior.  As a newcomer to town (we moved here in May 2008), I decided that the best way for me to learn about my new hometown was to photograph it.  I had a simple plan to shoot when I could and share an image once per week on Wednesdays (my day off from my regular job as a physician). What I failed to realize or consider at the time was just how much [...]

Last Light on Old Town House

Today's image of Old Town House reflecting the last light of sunset comes from an outing on June 23rd.  I had gone out that day to try again for a shot of State Street at sunset (an attempt the night before proved fruitless) and was rewarded for my efforts with a brilliant sunset display in historic downtown Marblehead.  As I made my way back to my car parked on Washington Street, I spotted the pink glow of sunset reflecting in the windows of Old Town House.  It only took a moment to get the camera set up again before the [...]
