Fishing off the Causeway

I think Summer officially peaked for me on Sunday, August 7th with this walk atop the causeway surrounded by scene after scene exemplifying the beauty of a Marblehead Summer.  Before capturing the closer view of a packed Devereux Beach, I happened upon a man standing more than waist deep in the Atlantic Ocean and fishing off the causeway. I watched him for a little while as I composed this image and waited for cars to pass by.  I didn't see him catch anything but he seemed quite content as the waves pushed and pulled at him.  I loved the proximity [...]

Framing the Sunset on Parker Lane

On Monday July 18th, I had returned home from work to find that my kids had been invited out for dinner and my wife was holding down the fort.  We had a few thunderstorms pass to the north and south earlier in the day and another band was making its way but likely would break up before dropping any rain (the story of this Summer).  With no kids to take care of, I decided to run out and see if the coming storm might mean some good light at sunset. As I drove, I checked the clouds on either side [...]

Life’s a Beach in Marblehead

After capturing the reflections at Redd's Pond, I made my way toward Devereux Beach and the causeway hoping to find more interesting compositions on this hot Summer Sunday.  I parked on the Riverhead Beach side and shot a few frames looking out toward Marblehead Light and then scaled the causeway to walk along its concrete path and take in views from both sides.  I shot toward Abbot Hall until I reached the halfway mark and then turned around to explore views of the Atlantic Ocean and Devereux Beach. As I neared the beach, I took note of the packed appearance [...]

Summer Days at Redd’s Pond

Two weeks ago, I decided to take a hiatus from Wednesdays in Marblehead to allow me time to explore this town and bring back that sense of adventure and awe that used to come with each outing.  I had found that I was going to the same spots over and over and getting decent images but few that brought back that feeling of wonder and excitement.  For those two weeks, the camera remained tucked away (except for that incredible rainbow and lightning at sunset outing and a commissioned shoot of a house). Yesterday, as cumulous clouds finally crossed over Marblehead, [...]

On Hiatus – New Photos resume August 8th

I went on hiatus last week as we dropped off our kids at sleep away camp and I had taken the week off work so figured I would completely unplug.  Well, this week has been great but has included just enough stress to make me realize I need another week before I can dive back in. See you next week but watch for a contest (on Facebook & Instagram) in the next few days (maybe Wednesday) to win one of my new 16-month 2017 calendars as I get ready to celebrate 6 years of Wednesdays in Marblehead.

Rainbow Lightning at Preston Beach

I just got home and can't believe what I'm looking at - rainbow lightning at Preston beach!  A bit of background on tonight's shot - I had gone out when the first storm passed just to the south of Marblehead around 6pm and was disappointed with the lack of lightning and that no rainbow appeared in its wake.  I returned home only to make a quick run to Vesuvius for dinner and thought I had settled in at home for the night. Without warning, torrential rain fell and I immediately pulled up my radar app to find an incredibly strong [...]

Finding their Way in the Fog

I hope you're not tired of these foggy images yet because I was like a kid in a candy store out at Chandler Hovey Park for the hour of incredible light on the night of July 5th.  At this point, the light was starting to deepen and the fog had lifted a bit just as the Town class boats made their way back into the harbor.  I can't recall what boat created the two lines in the water but the two sailors in this small townie seemed to be finding their way in the fog by following the line in the [...]

Chasing Rainbows and Storm Clouds

We have had an incredibly dry Summer in Marblehead which has translated into very few opportunities for chasing rainbows.  I have only had once chance thus far when a storm cloud passed through town (conveniently on a Wednesday evening) and I ran out of the house to the nearest vantage point. I arrived at the edge of Bass Rocks Lane as the light began to fade and had only seconds to capture this view of a rainbow, storm clouds and the white haze of falling rain over the ocean and Tinkers Island.  I'm hoping for a few more chances to chase rainbows [...]

Golden Fog in Marblehead Harbor

I can't help but return to the view of golden fog which descended on Marblehead on July 5th.  I've shared several images from this evening  already and remarked on how the fog kept shifting as did the light to create entirely new scenes from this familiar spot. As the fog began to thicken, I composed this image including Marblehead's simple skyline and homes along the harbor with boats filling the water.  The fog created a painterly effect that was incredible to behold then and now. Just the other night, fog again rolled into town near sunset and, again, I ventured [...]
