Hint of Smoke at Cormorant Rock

On January 11, Marblehead was predicted to see temperatures in the single digits and so I made sure to head to Front Street in the hopes of capturing some sea smoke. While temperature is a key factor in seeing mist rising from the relatively warm ocean water, wind is another key element. On this morning, the wind was strong which greatly diminished the presence of smoke. I found the highest amounts around Cormorant Rock and waited until the sun rose above the cloud/fog bank to light up the smoke. With the green channel marker bobbing in the water, I timed [...]

Snow-Capped Sunset

Less than 30 minutes after capturing the view of a frozen Redd's Pond, I had made my way to Tuckers Wharf to shoot the sunset. I had a particular shot in mind - that of Marblehead Light decked out in rope lights for the holiday season. While waiting, a pink sunset formed over the harbor and I moved to position these snow-capped moorings in just the right part of the frame to break up the otherwise monotonous (in a great way) pink water. Marblehead Light can be seen with its green beacon shining bright and the first hint of light [...]

Quick Freeze at Redd’s Pond

On Saturday, January 8th, I stopped at Redd's Pond just before sunset wondering if the recent freeze had frozen the pond for the first time this winter. I was thrilled to find smooth ice without any snow on the surface but plenty to be found in and around Pond View to set the scene. With sunset light reflecting off the red house, the ice served to pick up the golden light and diffuse it.  Unfortunately, the ice didn't last long and had broken up by the next day. With temps set to hit single digits, I'm sure another freeze is [...]

Dragon’s Breath

A fun start to the New Year with a fortunate capture during the annual Epiphany tree burning. I normally post first thing in the morning but this seemed more fitting as an evening share... I have shot the Christmas tree bonfire from almost every angle over the past few years since its resumption - slightly above from the Neck Run Cafe, across the water from Red Steps off Cliff Street and way above with my drone. I hadn't yet shot from across the causeway and so that was my destination on Thursday, January 6. I arrived to my spot before [...]

Epiphany Tree Burning Tonight at Riverhead Beach

The annual Epiphany tree burning, which resumed in 2016 at Riverhead beach, and then took hiatus for 2020/2021 is set to resume again tonight. I did not see anything posted to confirm timing but past years were at 6:30pm. With the current COVID surge, I would strongly recommend mask wearing even though this is an outdoors event. More photos from past events:

2021 – Year in Review

Every New Year's Day, I like to share every image posted to my Wednesdays in Marblehead site in the past year. This year was a bit of a turnaround with more image taken and shared than in 2020 as well as a new foray into football photography that took me to the sidelines at Gillette Stadium. Grab a coffee and start the new year with a look back at 2021 in Pictures.

Top 10 of 2021 – #1 – Spring in the Park

And we have reached my favorite image of 2021. first I want to thank everyone for what ended up being a incredible year for calendar and print sales. For the first time ever, I had three separate calendar printings and received such kind works about the images chosen. I also had the fortune of hanging my work at Eat Well Kitchen where many of the prints sold right off the wall. It really is the highest of compliments for a photographer to have someone connect with an image to the point of wanting to hang a print in their home. [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #2 – Remembering the Sunrise

This might be a first - my top 2 images were taken within 24 hours of each other. This sunrise was captured on the morning of April 15 and my #1 favorite of the year was taken at sunset the night before. At this point in the year, I hadn't shot a sunrise in over 3 months (which seems weird now as I have been capturing images of the dawn for the past few weeks). I decided to head to the end of Doak's Lane on this particular morning as the low tide and predicted location of the rising sun [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #3 – Best Laid Plans

Sometimes a photo makes the top 10 more for the memory of the outing than the quality of light. Such was the case on November 19th when I drove straight from work to Chandler Hovey Park in the hopes of shooting a moonrise and walked back to the car freezing and without a single shot of the moon that stayed hidden behind clouds.  That was when I spotted this scene with a small pool of rainwater offering the chance of a reflection. I swapped to my widest lens and set up for this shot with a longer exposure to pull [...]

Top 10 of 2021 – #4 – Hunting the Moon at Redd’s Pond

Though the site is called Wednesday in Marblehead, I more often than not shoot on other days of the week. However, this is the second top 10 image in a row captured on a Wednesday - this time October 20th. This was a busy day with a dawn moonset shoot, a stop at Eat Well Kitchen to discuss putting up prints for the month of December (they are still up though several have sold) then a trip to Brown's Island for an unexpectedly great sunset and, finally, a chance check at Redd's to capture the light of the moon. I [...]
