Keep it Local – Surroundings

Another Friday and another Keep it Local entry from a trip down Washington Street.  This weekend provides lots of opportunities to Keep it Local including the Marblehead Art Walk (I'll be at Mud Puddle Toys on Saturday showing prints and debuting the new 2013 Calendar).  There is also the annual Senior Carnival at Devereux Beach (click here for pix from last year). Surroundings is an interior design company located at 96 Washington Street.  They carry furniture, decor, linens and strive to 'help people find the style they're looking for which is easy to live with and affordable'.  Stop in and check [...]

Long Exposure – The Grate at Preston Beach

So I seemed to have mixed up my days this week - From the Rooftops (well, from the air) was posted on Tuesday instead of Thursday so I'm swapping in a Long Exposure today (which normally would go on the Tuesday)... With that figured out, on to today's image.  Back in mid-February, we had a warm spell and I was just getting the hang of these long exposure images.  I was waiting for high tide around sunset and was rewarded on this day with those conditions and just enough clouds in the sky to make that interesting.  I set up [...]

Trees Grow in Marblehead

I have been trying to find a good vantage point from which to photograph Abbot Hall on Front Street for some time.  The problem has been all of the overhead wires that crisscross that street.  Earlier this Spring, with these two trees in full bloom, I finally found the location and managed to capture this view. A bit of technical information for this one.  The image you see is a combination of two photos with focus points that vary between them.  I shot the trees in focus first and then quickly switched to Abbot hall.  I was shooting with a very long [...]

From the Air – Little Harbor

If you saw my post last Tuesday, you'll know the back story to how this photo came to be.  If not, I highly recommend reading that first and then coming back to this image. As we flew over Marblehead harbor, I quickly took some photos looking down over Little Harbor.  It really is amazing to see this area from this angle and I definitely did not appreciate it at the time.  As your eye works its way around, you notice Gerry Island, Fort Sewall, Front Street beach and the houses (especially those on Doak's Lane). Hope you enjoy this aerial [...]

Spring in Marblehead – Flowers and Abbot Hall

From a recent trip on the Marblehead Neck comes this view of Spring flowers on Foster Street.  After photographing the sun over the expansive home on this street, I turned and noted this view of flowers with the harbor behind.  The composition was a bit tougher and involved me laying down on the grass and trying to capture the image in a contorted position.  Enjoy this and a few more views of Spring coming later in the week.

Keep it Local – Scuppers for Kids

Scuppers for Kids is a fantastic store on Washington Street featuring 'unique hip clothing size newborn to tween, fun accessories for kids and moms, baby gifts, books, toys and shoes'.  It is under new ownership and they have generously provided money toward a local school's PTO.  They have won Best of the North Shore two years running and could really use your help in making it three in a row.  They are the only Marblehead business listed in the kids clothing section.  Please vote today: http://nshoremag.com/bons-2012-kids-clothing/  [/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

From the Rooftops – Flying over the Neck

I thought I had reached the conclusion of my Rooftop series this week.  I had scoured old images but did not see any I liked and did not have any shoots lined up.  I was pretty upset about having to put an end to this unique view of our town when Aviv Hod called me.  For those who may not know him, Aviv is a financial advisor.  We met at Shirat Hayam and I came to find out that he was an avid pilot.  As it was Wednesday and my only duties were to stain a desk for my son, [...]

Flowers on the Neck

We had a run of perfect weather in mid April and I ventured out one day to explore flowers on the Neck.  As I drove down Foster Street, I noticed this beautiful house and the flowers that had sprung to life near the road.  I carefully setup to capture the flowers under a bring Spring sun with the house forming a great backdrop.  If you stare at this one long enough, you can just about feel that warm sun on your skin and smell the crisp Spring air.

Long Exposure – A dramatic view of a pier on the Neck

A dramatic image on this Long Exposure Tuesday.  Back in January, I began my exploration of the piers that line the Neck and jut out into the harbor.  With a long exposure, still objects are key and so my eye was looking for appropriate subjects as I wandered down to the beach along the Neck.  I had explored a few compositions with this particular pier but it wasn't until I stepped back and included its full length that I felt I had the right one to balance the scene. With the composition set, I simply had to wait...and wait...for the [...]

A Spring Sail for the Jackson Cup

On April 14th, the Boston Yacht Club hosted the 14th annual invitational Jackson Cup regatta.  It was a beautiful Spring day and I couldn't pass up the chance to shoot the colorful sails in an empty harbor so I biked down to find a good vantage point.  My first stop was Hammond Park (which will soon play a major role in the Marine Aviation Centennial).  I caught the trees at just the right time and quickly composed a photo to highlight the boats passing the lighthouse inside our harbor with a perfect example of Spring's beauty.  Enjoy this image on [...]
