Unexpected Hiatus – back in 1-2 weeks

Sorry for the abrupt stop to photos here. The reason is fairly lame and technical. Basically, all of my photos primarily reside on a set of hard drives connected to my iMac (a RAID array). They are backed up locally and to the cloud. I realized three weeks ago that the drives were now over 5 years old which greatly increases the chance for failure. So, I promptly purchased new hard drives but then I had to certify each drive, back up all of the data on the RAID (8 TB) and, now, am  in the process of restoring that [...]

Mid-Harbor Sunset

I still have several images from recent outings to share but thought I would break things up with this mid-harbor sunset from a late June evening in 2018. This particular sunset wasn't as vibrant as some of the ones I've recently shared but what it lacked in sky color it more than made up for in reflections off the water. I used my camera's flip screen to get as low as I dared to the water and captured this image of boats filling the harbor and the last light of sunset reflecting beautifully off the calm water.

Aglow at the Eastern

Another image from Sunday night in which I was able to include that great cloud formation. I had made my way from Castle Rock to Foster Street and found a perfect spot for capturing the sunset behind Abbot Hall. As the sun dipped lower and began to emit a red-orange light, I turned and found the Eastern aglow. By moving around a bit, I was able to line up the cloud behind the Eastern Yacht Club as well as its golden reflection in the waters of the harbor. This was a 5-shot horizontal panorama that stretched from the lighthouse to [...]

Cloud Show at Castle Rock

I mentioned in Sunday night's post of that crazy sunset behind Abbot that my first stop had been Castle Rock. I had arrived just as a rain cloud passed offshore and had hoped for a rainbow but had to 'settle' for this really nice cloud show at Castle Rock instead. At 7:26pm, the sun was just low enough that a bit of golden glow can be seen in the middle of the cloud formation which reflected off the waters of the Atlantic below. I only stayed here for a few minutes before heading back to Foster Street but was excited [...]

Boats in the Harbor and a Fire in the Sky

As I walked our dog tonight, I spotted a very vibrant rainbow overhead and didn't even have my iPhone on me to capture it. By the end of the walk, I had figured there were better than even odds of a nice sunset so I grabbed my bag and headed out. I was more curious about the eastern sky so I headed to Castle Rock but the cloud formations didn't hold much interest. From there I moved on to Corinthian Lane and then Foster Street where I found a nice vantage point for the evening's show. I started shooting as [...]

First Rainbow of the Season

There's nothing quite like catching that first rainbow of the season ;-) I had already gone out once today but had come back without any photos to show for the quick drive. So I was laying on the couch after a nice meal from Howling Wolf and watching TV when I hear what sounded like rain. It took me a few seconds to realize the sound was coming from outside rather than the show and, as soon as my brain made that connection, little alarms went off in my head. Anytime I spot a shower within an hour of sunset, [...]

May Days in Marblehead

There is always a small lull in my photography in mid-May between the explosion of flowers at the beginning of the month and the build up of boats in the harbor towards the end. This shot was taken on May 22, 2015 and found in my 'to be posted' archive. Seemed like a nice window into the near future with the harbor rapidly filling with boats and coming into its picturesque summer shape soon.

First Dawn – Little Harbor

So technically not really 'first dawn' which would imply January 1st but it seemed like a nice play on words with First Harbor and dawn... This was captured on the morning of April 15th when I lucked out with the second nice dawn outing in a row. I shared one image earlier of Gerry Island after the sun broke the horizon but this one was taken about 5 minutes earlier. I had zoomed out to 24mm to capture the whole of Little Harbor with Gerry Island as well as the edge of Brown's Island on the left and the houses [...]

Calm Ocean

This was taken on May 1st - the same night I captured the pink and blue light over Marblehead Neck. Once that show was over, I turned towards Devereux Beach and found the calm ocean was reflecting the warm colors of sunset. I timed this shot to include the small amount of white at the edge of a wave coming to shore.

Full Pink Moon and the Channel Marker

Last week, I headed down to Fort Street for the moonrise and came away with a very different view when I focused on houses on the Neck and a lone sailboat. I mentioned in that post that it was really hard to not shoot the full pink moon with the lighthouse in the frame and, in reality, I really couldn't pass up that shot.  Though I have shot similar compositions before, this time I saw the setting sunlight glinting off the channel marker and decided that the small red and green marker added just enough to make for a new [...]
