Tombstones and Cherry Blossoms

Back to Harris Street for some new perspectives thanks to the very shallow depth of field of a 35mm lens. This is a collection of tombstones near the edge of the cemetery facing Harris Street and very close to the jagged stone wall. I crouched down and composed this shot to include the foliage of two of the cherry blossom trees resplendent in pink-purple flowers and backlit by the golden glow of sunrise.

Causeway Sunset

On Saturday night, I had checked an app that tries to predict strong sunsets and found a really good chance for great light. It's important to know that this app is right less than 50% of the time so I headed out of the house somewhat reluctantly and without clear direction. I headed down Atlantic Avenue and on to Ocean figuring the start of the causeway at Devereux Beach would give me the best shot of figuring out which way the light was strongest. I arrived 10 minutes before sunset and found a really delicate mix of pinks and blues [...]

Spring in the Park

Two weeks ago on Wednesday, April 14th, I had visited Crocker Park with the hope of shooting a nice sunrise. I lucked out with the shot I shared this past Monday of the sun coming up behind Marblehead Light but when I turned my head, I spotted this incredible sky behind me and ran to capture images of it as well. I shared my first image from that morning as soon as I returned home but had a chance to visit the other shots from that morning and worked on this one last night. In the first shot, I had [...]

Peak Blossoms at Harris Street Cemetery

Since I first discovered the patch of three cherry blossoms at the Harris Street Cemetery years ago, I have returned each April hoping to capture them at peak bloom. I had little hope for good color this year as the little snow and rain seemed to amount to stressful conditions for the trees that had not shown great color in a few years now. Imagine my surprise then when I pulled up after sunrise on April 14th and found vibrant colors contrasting with the deep green grass and the greys of the weathered tombstones. With this very small piece of [...]

Moonrise over the Neck

I almost bailed on tonight's full pink moon but, thanks to a friendly nudge from Mark Katz [markkatzphotography.com], I came away with a very unexpected final shot. So today was very busy with spring in full gear and lots of patients to see in the office. I arrived home after 6 and ate with the family and had no intention of shooting the moonrise despite a nice invite from Mark to meet him at the Barnacle. For those who don't follow him, Mark moved with his family to Marblehead in the past year (from Swampscott and New York before that). [...]

Chandler Hovey Sunrise

I'm going to try to be better about getting back to regular morning posts and this seemed like a great way to kick things back into gear... Normally, getting the sun (or moon) perfectly placed behind Marblehead Light would have been planned out ahead of time by using at least one (and likely two) apps to determine location and angles and...  But on this particular April morning, I lucked out. I had gotten up on April 14th to shoot the sunrise as promised storms hinted at a nice sunrise and I made my way somewhat blindly toward Crocker Park. I [...]

Boston Yacht Club’s Jackson Cup Race

Don't miss out on watching the Boston Yacht Club's Jackson Cup race finish up racing inside Marblehead Harbor right now... I have shot the BYC's Jackson Cup race even almost every year as it tends to offer great views with racing inside the harbor and the timing in late April usually affords some nice flowering trees to help frame the shots.  This image is from 2018 as I was out of town and unable to capture racing yesterday. Today's racing just started so head out to view some of the action if you can.

Wake Up Call

Two great sunrises in a row! So I wasn't entirely sure if it was worth setting an alarm for 5:30am again. I had checked my weather apps and saw some cloud cover predicted but then I recalled that age-old saying 'Red Sky in Morning, Sailors Take Warning' and figured, with rain coming later today, it was worth it. I woke and headed out with a single destination in mind - Doaks Lane. With the tide low, I knew the natural land bridge to Gerry Island would be at least somewhat visible and serve as a great leading line to the [...]

Spring Sunrise at Crocker Park

A brand new photo from this morning's really fun outing! I wasn't sure how the morning would pan out when I set the alarm for 5:30 but had three locations in mind for shooting the sunrise. As I got in the car only 10 minutes before sunrise, I was disappointed not to see any color in the sky and quickly decided on Crocker Park as the best vantage point as the high clouds seemed to be moving west.I parked at the State Street landing and headed up to find a nearly empty park and a bit of color behind Marblehead [...]

The Winter that Wasn’t

I hoped to have new landscapes or seascapes to share by now but, while I've had weekly photography outings in the past month and a half, they have been solely to capture my son and his teammates on the Marblehead Magician's freshman football team. Those moments have been a lot of fun to capture but I've been looking for opportunities to shoot new scenes of this town as well. I'm hoping to capture some blossoms as early as this Wednesday so stay tuned... In the meantime, here is one of my few new images from the winter that wasn't normal [...]
