Full House

I had my eye on the sky last night and was hoping for a solid sunset but some late clouds spoiled the show. Instead I dove into my 'to be posted' archive and stopped at this shot from an early October evening.  I had to check the location of this shot and was surprised to see I had captured it from Harbor Avenue just before it merges onto the causeway. With my telephoto lens near its full extension, the boats filling nearly every mooring are brought into close proximity to the Boston Yacht Club and homes on the distant shore. [...]

Tall Enough to Ride

One more from last weekend's carnival, I had set up in front of the Casino ride with a particular shot in mind - a mix of lights and reflections that I hoped to capture. As I was adjusting my settings and composition, I noticed a young girl walking up to the measurement sign checking to see if she was tall enough to ride.  I snapped a few frames as the girl stood tall and her sibling (I think) tried to figure out if she was indeed tall enough for the Casino ride. When I arrived home, this was my favorite [...]

The Midway

This is the image I had hoped to capture when I left the house on Saturday night (the second night of the annual Marblehead carnival). I was disappointed (but not surprised) by the low attendance on Friday night and, as I mentioned in the weekend post, had learned the carnival hadn't even opened on Thursday night due to cold and rain. Finally on Saturday, we had a break in the rain that has plagued Marblehead for some 25 of the past 31 days. With the break in the rain, the crowds were far more impressive on Saturday night and I [...]

Shimoda Explore 30 Bag Review – Urban Backpacking

I don't normally do gear reviews on this site but did have one post a few years back entitled 'What's in my bag' and, with a change in the gear I use to capture landscapes and seascapes in the town of Marblehead, as well as a new backpack (the Shimoda Explore 30) to carry it in, I thought I would try my first review. Background There is a common trope about photographers and their obsession with finding the perfect bag. For a long time, I did not appreciate how true that was as my photography is mostly confined to a [...]

Last Night at the Carnival

After a rain delay, the annual Marblehead High School carnival opened last night and welcomed teenagers to hang out among the rides, games and carnival food at Devereux Beach. My son was among the mainly seventh and eighth graders who took their place in attending this timeless tradition. I showed up at 8pm and spent an hour walking around and capturing a few images using scattered puddles from the intermittent rain to make for more interesting compositions. This was my favorite image from last night with the Music Fest ride in full swing and the name reflected in the puddle [...]

Carnival Reflections

It's here! The annual Marblehead High School carnival begins tonight at 6pm at Devereux Beach. So, technically the carnival was set to open yesterday but, when I drove out to check it out and see if I could capture some new images, I was told by a 'gamer' that they decided to postpone due to the cold and rain.  It seems the rain always follows the carnival and I have enjoyed capturing images of the rides in the morning and night using puddles as reflections. This image is from 2014's version and back in the day when the Ferris wheel [...]

Racing past Crocker Park

One more image from last weekend's Jackson Cup before we turn towards the Marblehead High School carnival that starts tonight.  This was another happy accident of having set my camera to an extended zoom/crop format and being able to compose a shot much tighter than I normally would have. With the sun out for a few minutes and the wind blowing, the sails of these boats reflected nicely in the water of Marblehead harbor. You can just make out a family watching from the benches at Crocker Park.

Moonglow

The full moonrise from late December turned out to be one of my favorite outings to capture the moon to date. I'm not sure what it was about that particular moonrise but I managed to take some images that felt unique and new - a tough task to accomplish after ten years of capturing images of Marblehead. With the moon up, I repositioned my tripod along the gangway at the Dolphin Yacht Club until I knew that the moon would pass perfectly behind Marblehead Light. With the position set, I adjusted my camera settings for this long exposure that would [...]

One Shot for the Jackson Cup

With a mix of sun and rain in the forecast for this weekend, I had a very specific shot in mind that I hoped to capture. On Saturday, I drove out to Hammond Park at a little past 5:00pm when the sun threatened to break through the rain clouds. I arrived just in time to see these three sailboats cross in front of Marblehead Light and managed to get my tripod set and click the shutter for this one shot before the light faded. I watched the race for a while and the sun never did reappear leaving very flat [...]

Jackson Cup Racing at the Boston Yacht Club

The Jackson Cup race took place this weekend in Marblehead Harbor and I went out on Saturday and Sunday hoping for a few new images of this favorite spring activity. I shot from Hammond Park on Saturday but switched to the Neck on Sunday. I was hoping for some sun to shine between the incoming rain clouds and lucked out with a few minutes of brilliant sunlight just before 10:00am. I'm normally very careful with my camera and settings and could sense that something was amiss as I took these shots but couldn't figure out what the problem was. It [...]
