Crazy Light at Castle Rock

Did anyone look out their window tonight and the absolutely crazy light in the sky??? I spotted something other than drab grey skies from my home office window and quickly ran out with gear in hand. I ended up on Harvard Street where I captured a few nice images of the sunset and an interesting formation of light and clouds. As that light petered out, I turned towards the car and saw this crazy bright pink-purple sky overhead. I made a beeline for Castle Rock and arrived just in time to capture this image. I did not play with colors [...]

Memorial Day Sunset

That might have been the most perfect Memorial Day weekend that we have had in years. After all the rain and clouds that have battered Marblehead in April and May, this long weekend proved to be a literal breath of fresh air with temperatures above 70, a gentle breeze, and hardly a drop of rain (at least, none during daylight hours). We had just finished grilling last night when I looked up and noticed the cloud cover and hints of color. I quickly checked the radar and decided on a quick trip out to capture the sunset. I drove down [...]

May Day at Devereux Beach

With cloudy skies dominating the weather for much of April and May, my photography outings have been limited to a small handful. I decided to look through my 'to be posted' archive for past May shots that had not yet seen the light of day and found much of the same. Guess May really is a cloudy month... I stopped at this image captured on May 14, 2017 at Devereux Beach. On smaller devices, you might miss the three surfers in the water waiting for a few waves as the setting sun illuminated a patch of clouds overhead on this [...]

Spinning Neon

This is my last image of the Marblehead Carnival for the year and one of my favorites. I had set up my tripod in front of the Round Up ride and was shooting frames of the midway as the sun set and the blue hour passed. I hadn't yet managed to capture the view of the neon lights of the rides fully showcasing their movement until the sky had fully darkened.  It took an 8 second exposure and some luck in having both rides moving to realized this shot. The long exposure meant that the mostly teenage crowd on the [...]

Cloudy Evening at Parker Lane

Parker Lane might just be my favorite public way in all of Marblehead and yet it has been punished by acts of nature and man in the past year. The stairs leading to the beach below are gone with the platform still evident but separated by a broken wall. Further up the road, a car accident has taken down the road sign and done damage to the walls of one of the homes along this lane. Still, this was my destination on Wednesday, May 15th as I chased the sunset from an initial few shots on Riverhead Beach across the [...]

Red and Yellow – The Jackson Cup

This year's Jackson Cup featured great conditions for racing but very difficult ones for photographing. Taking place in the midst of our nearly constant clouds and rain, I was disappointed with the very flat light I had to deal with for much of the race. When the clouds did break and allowed the sunlight to spill through, I made sure to take advantage and, luckily, got some nice grouping of boats at times. In this one, a group of boats with red and yellow sails crosses in front of Abbot Hall and the Boston Yacht Club. The sun peaked at [...]

Spring Sunset

I made it out for two sunsets last week and shared an early favorite from each outing but was happy to come away with more than a few 'keepers'. This image was captured from the end of the causeway where it turns onto Harbor Avenue on the Neck. I set up above the small unnamed beach there and had a perfect view of this spring sunset take shape with pastel colored clouds and green foliage. The harbor has been filling with boats but still has a ways to go as evidenced by the empty moorings dotting the still waters of [...]

Mid-Harbor Showers

Another impromptu outing last night as I returned home from my son's baseball game in Swampscott and then watched the sky fill with color as I walked the dog around the block. I returned home with him and then ran out and across the causeway where I spotted rain showers situated mid-harbor and perfectly centered between St. Michael's and Old North Church. I shot frame after frame as a few clouds overhead turned pink from the light of the setting sun and was thrilled with this image. It's not often that I shoot this mid-harbor view as I tend to [...]

Sunlight on the Neck

I had just about given up on any photo outings and had already chosen a photo from my 'to be published' archives to share this morning when I saw actual sunlight out my home office window. It feels like months since we last had any decent light and I didn't waste time heading out to chase a new image of Marblehead. I decided to head across the causeway to the Neck and figure things out from there but as I passed the Riverhead Beach lot, I looked to my left and saw this scene...and then drove right by (I couldn't [...]

Sky-Blue Pink

The internet is a strange and wonderful thing. I was looking for an image to share and stopped at this one of a brilliant pink and blue sky captured at dawn in mid-April. I shared two other images from this morning but, between the changing light and flexibility of composing with a zoom lens, had a number of 'keepers' from the morning. When it came time to come up with a title, I was lost. I decided to type in 'sky-blue pink' into Google and ended up going down a rabbit hole starting with finding it to be a modern [...]
