Explosion of Color

I had last gone out to capture images of Marblehead two weeks ago which seems to have become the norm for late winter/early-mid spring for me. The lack of foliage around town and the lack of boats in the harbor limits the compositional possibilities. When I saw rain in the forecast for this weekend, I quickly checked a few apps including those predicting cloud cover and saw there was a pretty good chance for a solid dawn/sunrise on Saturday morning. I set my alarm for 5am and was out the door shortly thereafter. As I drove to Crocker Park, I [...]

Red Sky in Morning

I had last gone out to capture images of Marblehead two weeks ago which seems to have become the norm for late winter/early-mid spring for me. The lack of foliage around town and the lack of boats in the harbor limits the compositional possibilities.   When I saw rain in the forecast for this weekend, I quickly recalled that old sailor's adage 'red sky in morning, sailors take warning'. I proceeded to check a few apps including those predicting cloud cover and saw there was a pretty good chance for a solid dawn/sunrise on Saturday morning. I set my alarm [...]

Sunset for the Birds

By |2023-04-15T16:33:06-04:00April 15th, 2023|Categories: Sunset|Tags: , , |

I went out last night as my now two sunset predicting apps had very different ideas about whether I could expect a nice showing. I crossed the causeway and kept driving until Harvard Street where it seemed the sun would set immediately behind Abbot Hall. As I watched the sun descend and the clouds turn an orange hue, I was surprised to see hundreds of birds flying before me. Normally, I would wait for a break in the bird flight to capture the scene but the seagulls were so plentiful that I thought I would try to capture a frame [...]

Pink Moon over Marblehead Neck

By |2023-04-09T21:54:41-04:00April 10th, 2023|Categories: moon|Tags: , , , |

Though our weather has been incredible this spring, clouds in the past few days meant that I missed the chance to capture April's full pink moon. Luckily, I had this image captured on April 26, 2021 in my 'to be posted' folder. I had gone out on this April night under perfect conditions and came home with three 'keepers'.  One taken from Front Street where it meets Franklin that allowed me a zoomed in view of the full pink moon and Marblehead light. The other near the Barnacle that let me compose a tight shot of the lone sailboat with [...]

A Day Late at Little Harbor

I recently purchased a subscription for a service that was supposed to help predict nice sunsets and sunrises based on a wealth of meteorological data. It had been right once in the two months since I purchased it and I was growing increasingly frustrated with it until Friday night when I watched from home as the sky exploded in color. My frustration led me to checking weather conditions for myself last night and I found that conditions were somewhat promising for sunset so I hopped in the car and drove. The high clouds that favor a nice sunset initially showed [...]

Consolation Prize

I had high hopes for capturing the moon setting over Marblehead this morning and made sure to wake by 5am for the best chance of capturing the full moon against the early morning light. I checked conditions from my window and spotted the bright moon and then headed out to the Neck all the while watching some unexpected clouds build over the horizon. I arrived at Chandler Hovey Park just as dawn's light began to bloom and just as the moon disappeared behind the clouds. As the light brightened, I quickly gave up hopes for a shot of the moon [...]

Smoke-Filled Sunrise

By |2023-02-05T09:06:33-05:00February 4th, 2023|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , |

What an incredible morning! So all week as predictions for a brutal cold snap kept coming in, I considered my options when it came to capturing sea smoke. This is by far my favorite scene to capture as it is one I have only seen in Marblehead (having been raised on the West coast). As a last minute surprise, my daughter told me that she wanted to join so, alarms set, we had a plan!   Woke at 6am and checked the outdoor temperature: -10F. We headed to Fort Beach where I was thrilled to see my work partner had [...]

Celebrating General Glover’s Birthday

By |2023-01-29T22:24:26-05:00January 29th, 2023|Categories: Traditions|Tags: , , , |

I've walked along Glover's Regiment and captured their annual march in honor of General Glover's Birthday on three prior occasions but each year feels like a new experience. This year I was running late so missed the march but made it to Old Burial Hill in time to hear Seamus Daly recount the life of John Glover and then managed one perfect frame of the three volley salute.   My ears are still ringing...
