Calm Waters in Marblehead Harbor

This seemed like a good photo to finish off the week and get the long weekend off to a nice start.  I shared two images from this vantage point already - the Harvest Moon and the 116 Megapixel panorama that immediately preceded it.  While I was at this unique spot overlooking the perfectly calm waters in Marblehead Harbor, I couldn't help by shoot all the compositions that came to mind as the sun set and the pink colors of sunset reflected off the water. I don't often shoot verticals - especially when the horizontal offers so much more to take [...]

Marblehead Harbor Under a Beautiful Sky

Do you remember that Storm Chasing image I shared in mid-September?  This is what I had been after that day.  Great cumulus clouds were forming over Marblehead Harbor and I drove out to try to capture the scene of the harbor filled with boats under a beautiful sky. By the time I reached this spot, the clouds seemed to be chased by rapidly darkening sky.  I only managed two frames before the darkness caught up to and seemed to consume these fluffy white clouds.  I wasn't long before I would race out to Chandler Hovey Park and capture the storm [...]

The End of Summer in Marblehead

I was trying to decide on an image to share today and started looking at the 'to be posted' folder of images.  As I worked my way down the list with the windows open and the cool air coming in, I knew that I needed to find an image that exemplified the end of Summer in Marblehead.  Though the leaves have started to turn colors, this small burst of Summer-like weather had put me back in that frame of mind. As soon as I clicked on this image, I knew it would be perfect.  This was taken on July 31st [...]

Seagull at Dawn in Marblehead Harbor

I spent all of last week sharing images of a great dawn over Marblehead Harbor during which the fog gradually thickened as the sun rose.  Once the sun rose high enough in the sky, I sought out compositions to take advantage of the great diffused red light that bathed the harbor and boats.  This was one such scene. I was reasonable happy with the composition at first but felt it was missing something.  Then, as if drawn by an artist's eye, this lone seagull swooped in to just about the perfect spot in the frame.  For such an ugly bird, [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 5 – Fort Beach and Fort Sewall

An hour and a half after starting this photo shoot on a foggy morning, I finally tore myself away from Marblehead Harbor and drove off in search of other vantage points.  I made my way down Front Street and ended up at Fort Beach facing the head of the harbor and Fort Sewall.  The sky had taken on an orange hue at this point and the fog remained thick.  I composed this scene to include the tide pools seen at low tide along Fort Beach while also including the great tree at Fort Sewall and the boats moored in the [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 4 – Feeling Lucky

Day 4 of this week's posts all coming from the same foggy morning in Marblehead.  I mentioned before that these images were taken on September 11th which ended up being a 90 degree day and I headed out that morning at dawn hoping for a good sunrise.  As you saw in the posts earlier this week, both dawn and the sunrise were worth the few hours lost sleep. As the sun rose, the fog actually increased (rather than burning off as I expected).  At this point, I began to look for compositions with boats against the rising fog.  There is [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 1 – Marblehead Harbor at Dawn

On the night of Tuesday, September 10th we were on the cusp of a 90 degree day and so I turned to my weather apps to try to predict the next morning's sunrise conditions.  I was disheartened to see clear skies in the forecast and turned to twitter to see if Matt Noyes might help me out.  As a testament to his availability and knowledge, I received the following information from him that night: "Well...the app likely says clear b/c it's tied to computers which also mostly say clear after 3am clearing trend commences. But..Presence of cloud deck now, including [...]

Soft Light Over Marblehead Harbor

I mentioned on Monday's post that immediately after taking the shot of Devereux Beach on a foggy evening, I captured two soft sunset images - this is one of them.  I'm not sure why but the idea of using the fence as a compositional piece had not occurred to me previously - I typically would walk down the causeway a bit for the unobstructed view. On this particular night, the light was diffused by the fog so that there was great balance in the foreground elements of the fence and grass with the distant elements of Marblehead harbor filled with [...]

Flag on a Lamp Post

A simple, clean composition to end the week.  This image comes from mid-July and a trip to Devereux Beach to capture a long exposure of the ocean [LINK].  Before taking that shot and while the sun was still high up in the sky, I spotted the American flag on this nearby lamp post on the mainland part of the causeway.  I chose a vertical or portrait orientation to capture the full length of the lamp post and went with a wide angle lens to heighten the separation from lamp post to the shores of Marblehead Neck.  The light was perfect [...]
