After the Storm – Lovis Cove at High Tide

On Friday, January 3rd, the storm that dropped almost 2 feet of snow and brought with it arctic temperatures had finally departed from Marblehead.  As high tide approached, the remnants of the storm's power could be seen in the astronomically high water levels and I drove around town trying to capture the feel of the storm's cold and the high tide. As I came down Front Street, I found the way to Fort Beach closed off due to flooding but saw this scene before me at Lovis Cove.  I have shot from Lovis Cove on a few occasions and actually [...]

Skiff at Sunset

One more image from Saturday's shoot of the Beaver moon rising.  A skiff tied to a mooring is captured on an early November night with the waters of Marblehead Harbor reflecting the colors of sunset. When all was said and done, I had come away from this brief shoot with 3 images to share this week and two more that are now in the 'to be published' archive.  It's no wonder I can never seem to get that archive number down...

Persephone and the Empty Harbor

I mentioned in yesterday's post of the Beaver Moon rising over Marblehead Harbor that I had arrived a bit early at the Boston Yacht Club and was keeping myself busy while waiting for the moon to rise by photographing other elements in the harbor.  I found this lone sailboat named Persephone surrounded by empty moorings and I couldn't help but capture the boat under the soft light of sunset with houses on Marblehead Neck in the distance. As my son is currently obsessed with Greek mythology thanks to the Percy Jackson series, the story of Persephone was well known to [...]

Marblehead Harbor Filled with Boats at Sunset

Is there a better site than Marblehead Harbor filled with boats?  While the harbor can be beautiful in the Winter as well, there really isn't any comparison to the view of boats taking up every last mooring.  And if you happen to catch a nice Summer sunset, then that scene is just about perfect. This image was taken in mid-August from Marblehead Neck looking back toward the harbor.  The temperature had been a very comfortable 72 degrees with light winds and I actually had to time this shot just right for the brief gusts that would bring the American flag [...]

Remembering Warmer Days in Marblehead Harbor

We just had our first sub-30 degree morning and the sunsets now take place at 4:30pm.  The first few days after daylight savings time ends are always the toughest and, as I looked for an image to share, my eyes fell upon this scene of Marblehead harbor. Taken on July 24th, I had headed across to Marblehead Neck to photograph the start of Junior Race Week.  There was little wind to work with so the one-maned optis were starting to bunch together and, while that may have been frustrating to the young sailors, it made for fantastic photo opportunities.  I [...]

November Sunset over the Causeway

We had some incredible sunsets to mark the beginning of November.  Friday's was breathtaking but I had to resign myself to enjoy it from my car as I made it home too late to get the camera and still capture those amazing colors.  Saturday was a good show in its own right but we had plans that trumped any hope of getting out to shoot...again. On Sunday night, I decided to go out no matter what.  With the end of Daylight Savings Time, that meant leaving the house at 4:15pm and hoping that the plentiful clouds that had filled the [...]

Halloween Race in Front of Abbot Hall

On Saturday, I decided to head out to catch the start of the Annual Eastern Yacht Club Halloween Race in Marblehead Harbor.  The conditions were perfect for racing with strong winds but that made for less than fun conditions standing across the harbor shooting the action.  I started off getting images of the colorful sailboats crossing in front of Old North Church and was hoping the race course would extend out toward Abbot Hall even though that section of the harbor seemed to be fairly full with boats (for this late in the season). It turned out that the image [...]

Crocker Park on a Warm Summer Day

With Thursday's warm up, I felt some nostalgia for the just passed Summer and immediately jumped to this image in my archive.  This shot was taken on July 3rd while I was out scouting spots from which to shoot the fireworks.  We were in the midst of one of many heat waves and the temperature on this day hit a very muggy 89F.  Not unexpectedly the float at Crocker Park was packed and I decided to capture some images looking down on the scene from the walkway above. If you look closely (go to the full size image on the [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Harbor

Earlier in the week, I became a bit overwhelmed by the number of images I had waiting to post and turned to Facebook to see what everyone was most interested in seeing.  The answers included the expected foliage shots but also a strong vote for more images taken in the fog. This image comes from the morning of September 11th when an incredibly dense fog rolled in and enveloped Marblehead Harbor.  I began shooting from near the State Street Landing but moved toward Fort Beach as the sun rose in the morning sky.  This was one of the last images [...]
